- Abstract
- Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

- »Israel Rosenfield ist ein eindrucksvoller und origineller Denker. Nach seiner Meinung hat die klassische mechanistische Neurologie unbeschadet all ihrer großen Errungenschaften abgewirtschaftet. Neurologische Krankheit oder Gesundheit sei ohne Bezug zum ständig wechselnden Körperbild, zum Bewußtsein, zum Sein des Organismus nicht zu verstehen. In diesem bedeutenden Buch zeigt der Autor anhand einerVielzahl klassischer Krankheitsfälle, wie grundlegend anders sie erklärt werden können, bezieht man alle Begleitumstände auf das Zentrum des Individuums, auf sein Selbstsein. Bei der Lektüre hat der Leser das Gefühl, er sähe die Patienten tatsächlich vor sich und Verstünde sie zum erstenmal. Das Buch dürfte jeden ansprechen, der sich fragt, was es heißt, ein bewußter Mensch zu sein, und der wissen möchte, wie Identität in sich organisiert ist und wie sie selbst Gesundheit und Krankheit organisiert.

- Abstract
- Computer haben merkwürdige Eigenschaften. Sie erledigen eine Menge komplexer Aufgaben schneller, geauer und zuverlässiger als der Mensch. Mit relativ simplen Fähigkeiten, die wir intuitiv einsetzen, haben sie jedoch zu kämpfen. Und bei Verstehen, Intelligenz und Bewußtsein versagen sie völlig. Der menschliche Geist läßt sich prinzipiell rechnerisch nicht angemessen simulieren, behauptet der Autor. Dennoch sind es physikalische Prozesse im Gehirn, die das Bewußtsein ausmachen. Er fordert in der Fortsetzung der Diskussion um 'Computerdenken' eine neue, eine nicht-rechnerische 'Physik des Bewußtseins' für die Beschreibung des Geistes, die eine Art Verallgemeinerung der Quantenmechanik sein könnte. Er entwirft schließlich ein eigenens Modell für das Gehirn, in dem die heute bekannten Vorgänge nur die Schatten eines tieferen Phänomens, des Geistes sind
