    Abstract
    Die formale Analyse von Dokumenten ist seit alters her eine der Hauptaufgaben der Bibliotheken und Archive, in neuerer Zeit auch der Dokumentationsstellen. Die gesammelten und ausgewerteten Dokumente müssen identifizierbar und wieder auffindbar sein. Die formale Analyse bietet die Möglichkeit, die formalen Charakteristika von Dokumenten zu beschreiben. Damit können die Dokumente unter mehreren, aber immer den formal gleichen Such- und Ordnungsmerkmalen in Katalogen, Datenbanken, Bibliographien o.ä. nachgewiesen werden. Hierzu werden nach festgelegten Regeln die verschiedenen formalen Charakteristika zu "Auswertungselementen" zusammengefaßt, die jeweils eine sinnvoll nicht weiter zu unterteilende Klasse zusammengehöriger Charakteristika bilden (z.B. ist ein Datum, bestehend aus Tag, Monat, Jahr nicht weiter zu unterteilen und bildet deshalb ein Auswertungselement). Alle bei der formalen Analyse ermittelten Auswertungselemente für die Beschreibung eines Dokumentes werden in festgelegter Form und Reihenfolge niedergeschrieben. Aus der vollständigen Menge von Auswertungselementen wird nur ein bestimmter Teil als Ordnungs- oder Suchmerkmale ausgewählt. Das Ergebnis der formalen Analyse wird gemeinhin "Titelaufnahme" oder "Fundstelle" oder "Zitat" genannt.

    Abstract
    1998 wurde die Digitalisierung der Zettelkataloge der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in Wien abgeschlossen. Diese technologische Veränderung, welche die Mehrzahl der kulturellen Archive der Gegenwart vollziehen, ist ein Einschnitt in der Geschichte der Bibliothek und ihrer Benützer, eine Bruchstelle, die zugleich eine Fundstelle ist: Ab diesem Zeitpunkt kann der Buchbestand nur noch per Computer abgerufen werden; die fast gewichtslose Karteikarte, deren Lesen und Finden im Katalog noch an eine gewisse räumliche und taktile Erfahrung gebunden war, wird zur gewichtslosen, allseits abrufbaren Information. Der Nominalkatalog, also das alphabetische, nach Autor und Titel geordnete Verzeichnis der Bibliothek, umfaßt 84 Katalogkästen aus Holz, Stahl und Kunststoff, 3024 Laden und rund 2,6 Millionen Zettel, an denen Bibliothekare mehrerer Generationen gearbeitet haben. Der Zettelkatalog ist ein unscheinbares Möbel. Erst sein Fehlen oder seine Unvollständigkeit wird bemerkt. Als ein System geistiger Ordnung, wie Robert Musil den Katalog beschrieben hat, ist er historisch geworden. Damit aber wird der Katalog - durch die Digitalisierung von seinem Zweck befreit - erstmals als Skulptur im Raum sichtbar.
    Dieser Raum kann vom Betrachter ästhetisch und historisch "durchmessen" werden. Er ist im ästhetischen Sinn erfahrbar als eine sterile und neutrale Topographie von Kästen, Laden und Zettel. Zugleich ist er historisch lesbar als eine durch Volumen, Anspruch und Komplexität gleichermaßen erhabene wie groteske Kulisse der Moderne. Sie umgrenzt einen historischen Raum von der Französischen Revolution bis zur Gegenwart: Die Zettel und Kästen erzählen von einer über Jahrhunderte hindurch entwickelten methodischen Anstrengung der Ordnung und der Disziplinierung der Erinnerung. Sie bilden ein semiotisches System, das auf die Vergangenheit eines papierenen Ordnungs- und Aufschreibsystems verweist. Zur Gegenwart und Geschichte des Kataloges haben wir in diesem Band Texte, Materialien und Fotografien aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln versammelt. Auf die drei Originalbeiträge und Bilder vom Katalog folgt eine ausführliche Dokumentation seiner Entstehung und Vorstufen. Bevor er in der Geschichte verschwindet, wird der Katalog 1999 an mehreren Stationen in Europa ein letztes Mal gezeigt. Welche Funktion haben dabei die Organisatoren, die den Katalog auf seiner Reise begleiten? Im Bernerdeutsch des Schweizer Schriftstellers Friedrich Glauser findet sich dafür vielleicht der passende Ausdruck. Wenn man eingeladen wird, an einem Ereignis teilzunehmen, an einer Partie Jass etwa oder an einem Essen, wird man gefragt, ob man dabei "mithelfen" will. So als ob das Spiel sich selber spiele, als ob die Mechanik des Ereignisses von selbst ablaufe und es nur einer kleinen Mit- oder Nachhilfe bedürfe, damit es wie von selbst vonstatten geht.

    Abstract
    Seit der 1983 in zweiter Auflage erschienenen 'Katalogkunde: Formalkataloge und formale Ordnungsmethoden' hat sich durch die elektronische Datenverarbeitung die Arbeit im Bereich der Katalogisierung einschneidend verändert. Einerseits ist ein gewisser Entwicklungsprozeß noch nicht abgeschlossen (Regelwerke, Datenformate, Einbindung in den allgemeinen Informations- und Kommunikationsprozeß), andererseits ist das Wissen sowohl um konventionelle als auch um elektronische Kataloge auch in 'unsicheren Zeiten' nicht verzichtbar. Entsprechend versteht sich die Einführung als Hilfe für Unterricht, Fortbildung und Praxis in Zeiten des Umbruchs und der Entwicklung. Sie möge deshalb auch denen dienen, die nicht unmittelbar mit der Katalogisierung zu tun haben, aber Zusammenhänge erkennen wollen und Entscheidungen zu treffen haben

    Abstract
    Untersucht wird die Katalogisierung von Musikalien und Musiktontrögern nach Stimmen- und Interpretbesetzungen, um auch Recherchen nach Interpretennamen und Gesang- und Instrumentalstimmen zu ermöglichen. Dieses ist bisher in OPACs nicht endgültig gelöst. Es wird ein Weg für den PICA-OPAC aufgezeigt, eine Erweiterung des PICA-3-Kategorienschemas vorgeschlagen und am Beispiel der Katalogisierung von Tonträgern mit historischen oder modernen Blechblasinstrumenten illustriert

    Abstract
    Die EDV-gestützte Erschließung der Altbestände wird in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre in größerem Rahmen im Zuge der retrospektiven Katalogkonversion betrieben. Die Konversionsdaten sind lediglich geeignet, die gröbsten Defizite in der Literaturversorgung der historisch ausgerichteten Wissenschaftsdisziplinen zu kompensieren. Da sie unter Verzicht auf Autopsie erhoben werden müssen, sind sie von eingeschränktem bibliographischem Wert und bieten keinen hinreichenden Ersatz für den bislang fehlenden nationalbibliographischen Nachweis des deutschen Schrifttums vor allem des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts. Die vorliegende Untersuchung möchte Anregungen geben, wie eine auf Autopsie basierende Rekatalogisierung Alter Drucke (und damit möglicherweise auch die sukzessive Aufwertung von Konversionsdaten) hinsichtlich der wünschenswerten Erschließungstiefe, der erforderlichen bibliographischen Präzision, der notwendigen Standards und Normierungen sowie der daraus resultierenden Zugriffsmöglichkeiten im Online-Katalog aussehen könnte. Zu diesem Zweck werden mit dem 'Catalogue Automatisé des Anonymes Anciens (Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris)' und dem 'Short Title Catalogue Netherlands (Königliche Bibliothek Den Haag)' zwei bedeutende Rekatalogisierungsprojekte des europäischen Auslands mit (quasi-) nationalbibliographischer Zielsetzung und Qualität vorgestellt und analysiert

    Abstract
    Der provokante Titel war gleichzeitig Name und Programm einer gut besuchten Po-diumsdiskussion der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, angeregt durch die Bestrebungen, die Katalogisierungsregeln in Deutschland zu reformieren. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer der Podiumsrunde machten mit ihren Diskussionsbeiträgen schnell klar, daß die Frage nur rhetorisch gemeint sein konnte. Unumstritten ist der Zwang zu Veränderungen, bewirkt durch den technischen Fortschritt einerseits und den Kostendruck andererseits. Bei der Frage, welche Veränderungen notwendig sind, gingen die Meinungen allerdings ziemlich auseinander. Aus dem sich rege an der Diskussion beteiligenden Auditorium kam Kritik an den Normdateien, speziell der Personen-namendatei (PND) und vor allem an der Gemeinsamen Körperschaftsdatei (GKD) als dem arbeitsaufwendigsten und teuersten Katalogisierungsinstrument überhaupt.

    Abstract
    Seit 1993 verfolgt die DFG das Ziel des Aufbaus einer Handschriftendatenbank für mittelalterliche Handschriften. Grund genug, sich nach einem Rückblick noch einmal der konzeptionellen und methodischen Grundlagen zu versichern. Im einem Datenbankentwurf sind die zu erwartenden Nutzersichten zu integrieren und die handschriftentypischen Schwierigkeiten zu diskutieren. Die neue Situation, Quellen als Digitalisate einbinden zu können, ist dabei zu berücksichtigen.

    Abstract
    Die Deutsche Bibliothek benutzt seit der Einspielung ihrer Personennamen die nationale Normdatei für Personennamen (PND) integriert für die Katalogisierung. Der seit Beginn der redaktionellen Arbeiten an der PND laufenden Diskussion über die Erfassung von Normdatensätzen für einzelnen Personen und deren Verwendung in der Formalerschließung wollen Die Deutschen Bibliothek eine statistisch belegte Grundlage verschaffen und hat deshalb einen Test zur Ermittlung ihres Aufwands für die erweiterte Individualisierung durchgeführt. Der Test ermöglicht Aussagen über den Zeitaufwand und das Verhältnis von nichtindividualisierten zu individualisierten Datensätzen an Der Deutschen Bibliothek und belegt, daß der hauptsächliche Aufwand bei der retrospektiven Zuordnung von Titeln anfällt. Die Deutsche Bibliothek spricht sich auf der Grundlage des Tests für die Fortführung der Individualisierung aus
