- Abstract
- Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar. Um die spezifisch philosophische Begriffsarbeit im Kontext des gesamten Wissenschaftssystems zu veranschaulichen, werden zudem auch Begriffe aus angrenzenden Fachgebieten - Theologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Soziologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Politik, Jurisprudenz, Medizin sowie aus den Naturwissenschaften - behandelt.

- Abstract
- Das traditionsreiche, umfangreichste und wohl bedeutendste Verzeichnis deutschsprachiger Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, erscheint jetzt in seiner 19. Ausgabe. In drei Bänden werden Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die in der Regel habilitiert und an einer deutschsprachigen wissenschaftlichen Institution tätig sind, mit ihren wichtigsten bio- und bibliographischen Daten vorgestellt. Da gerade auch in den Naturwissenschaften Forschungsschwerpunkte über Aufsätze vermittelt werden, wurde wieder eine Auswahl der wichtigsten Veröffentlichungen in Zeitschriften, Sammelwerken und Lexika berücksichtigt. Ebenso sind Übersetzungen fremder Werke aufgeführt. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler der verschiedenen Disziplinen in einem Alphabet Die bewährte Tradition fortführend und bestärkt durch die überaus positive Resonanz werden die Gelehrten aller Fachrichtungen - Naturwissenschaften, Medizin, Technik, Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften - einzig nach dem Alphabet geordnet. Insgesamt 71.800 aktualisierte und neue Einträge Die Tradition der neutralen, die wissenschaftlichen Leistungen nicht bewertenden Verzeichnung lebt auch in der 19. Ausgabe fort. Nach wie vor versteht sich der Kürschner als "Dokument der Entwicklung der deutschsprachigen Wissenschaft im Spiegel der sie gestaltenden Persönlichkeiten", als Organ, dessen Hauptanliegen ein möglichst vollständiges Bild der deutschsprachigen Wissenschaftslandschaft ist. Mit 71.800 Einträgen - davon über 7.000 zum ersten Mal in dieser Ausgabe - ist er diesem ehrgeizigen Ziel sehr nahe gekommen. Mit ausführlichem, informativem Anhang Abgerundet wird die 19. Ausgabe durch einen ausführlichen, aktualisierten Anhang. In diesem finden sich ein Nekrolog, der die seit der letzten Auflage von 2001 verstorbenen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auflistet, ein Fachgebietsregister, ein Festkalender, ein Verzeichnis wissenschaftlicher Verlage mit Anschrift und verlegerischem Schwerpunkt und schließlich eine Adressliste aller deutschsprachigen Universitäten und Fachhochschulen.

- Das Multimedia-Lexikon in Version 2004 bietet keine grundlegenden Neuerungen. Neben dem Lexikonteil mit 117.000 Stichwörtern gehören ein Atlas, eine Zeitleiste, Themenreisen, Wörterbücher für Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch und Italienisch sowie das Wahrig-Fremdwörterbuch zur Ausstattung. Für multimedialen Pepp sorgen 16.000 Medienelemente wie Diashows, Videos, Tondokumente und Animationen. Auf dem neuesten Stand bleibt das Lexikon dank monatlicher Online-Updates. Das Lexikon lässt sich nichtvollständig auf Festplatte kopieren, die DVD muss für das Nachladen der Multimedia-Dateien während der Benutzung eingelegt bleiben. Das Nachschlagewerk lässt sich intuitiv bedienen, die meist knappen Lexikon-Texte werden durch Multimedia-Elemente und Internet-Links ergänzt. Der Atlas bietet keine 3D-Globus-Ansicht und umfasst nur zwei Einstellungen: "Länder" für geografische Karten und "Sehenswürdigkeiten" für eine Übersicht über "Metropolen", "Kultstätten" und "Naturlandschaften". Spezielle Themenkarten etwa für Klima, Niederschlag, Zeitzonen oder eine Mondkarte fehlen.

Das gilt auch für Besitzer der OEM-Versionen! Allerdings haben Käufer das Procedere selbst in die Wege zu leiten - die Händler übernehmen das nicht. Preise: Standard: 119 Mark Plus: 179 Mark Professional, inklusive Atlas: 249 Mark CHIP Online meint: Schnell noch die alte Version des Atlas' für 110 Mark ziehen, denn die ist ok! - Drei Programmversionen der Enzyklopädie geplant: Microsoft will die neue Version der Enzyklopädie Encarta Anfang Oktober in drei Versionen auf den deutschen Markt bringen. Als Neuerungen kann man durch virtuelle 3D-Welten reisen und eine verbesserte Suchfunktion verwenden. Die kleinste Edition stellt die normale Encarta 2002 dar, die nun 37.300 Artikel und 16.000 Medienelemente enthält. Als Neuerung steht nun eine erweiterte Suchfunktion bereit, die eine Schnell- und Stichwortsuche sowie eine erweiterte Suchfunktion mit Einschränkungsmöglichkeiten bietet. Ein neuer "InfoChecker" steht für Online-Tools wie ein Deutschwörterbuch, ein Deutsch-Englisch-Lexikon und weitere enzyklopädische Artikel von Encarta Online, die jetzt auch im Stichwortverzeichnis erscheinen. Etwas besser ausgestattet ist die Encarta Plus 2002, in der die neuen virtuellen 3D-Reisen enthalten sind. Damit können antike Stätten im dreidimensionalen Raum durchwandert werden, selbst wenn diese eigentlich zum Großteil zerstört sind. Mit 46.300 Artikeln stehen fast doppelt so viele Berichte zur Verfügung wie bei der Standard-Version, was durch 19.000 Multimedia-Elemente und 5.500 Internet-Adressen ergänzt wird. Die dritte Version der Encarta-Reihe, die Encarta Professional 2002, entspricht weitestgehend der Plus-Version und umfasst zusätzlich den Encarta-Weltatlas mit 1,8 Millionen Karteneinträgen. Ferner stehen hier 24.000 Multimedia-Elemente zur Wahl. Im Unterschied zu den beiden anderen Versionen will Microsoft die Professional-Version alternativ auch auf DVD und nicht nur auf CD anbieten. Die Encarta 2002 soll für Windows 98, Millennium, 2000 und XP Anfang Oktober in den Handel kommen und in der Standardversion 119,- DM kosten. Der Preis für die Plus-Variante beträgt 179,- DM, während die Professional-Version mit 249,- DM zu Buche schlägt.
