    "Einvernehmen immerhin herrscht darin: Offenbar erfanden Völker unabhängig voneinander in verschiedenen Regionen der Welt Zeichensysteme, um Gedachtes und Gesprochenes zu fixieren. Was für den Einzelnen als Gedächtnisstütze diente, taugte auch für Mitteilungen an andere. Zum Beispiel um Besitz zu markieren. So entstanden im Zweistromland um 8000 v. Chr. geometrisch einfache Tonmarken, womit die Menschen Agrarprodukte registrierten. Von einer Schrift ist das natürlich noch weit entfernt. Aber es führte knapp 5000 Jahre später zu Tontäfelchen mit dann schon ziemlich komplexen Angaben etwa zum Inhalt von Gefäßen. Zu den circa 80 Zeichen, die sich aus den Tonmarken entwickelten, traten außerdem Bildsymbole, die konkrete Gegenstände bezeichneten. Um die 1200 Zeichen muss diese pikto graphische Schrift gekannt haben, aus der sich dann ab 3100 v Chr. die verschiedenen Keilschriften im Mittleren Osten formten. Ebenfalls um diese Zeit tauchten in Ägypten die Hieroglyphen auf. Ob es da schon Anregung zwischen den beiden Regionen gab ist umstritten. Jedenfalls aber sehen die Hieroglyphen völlig anders aus und bilden in viel höherem Maße eine Bilderschrift. Auch dienten sie von Anbeginn an zum Verfassen religiöser und literarischer Texte; was bei der Keilschrift erst viel später ein-, setzte. Umgekehrt behielten die: Ägypter für solche Zwecke die Hieroglyphenschrift praktisch unverändert bei, während für die Verwaltung daneben stark vereinfachte Schriften entstanden. Völlig unabhängig hiervon entwickelten die alten Hochkulturen Lateinamerikas ebenfalls Bilderschriften und - als ein Beispiel aus Ostasien - China. Das zeigt sehr plastisch das Problem aller Bilderschriften, bei denen im Grunde ein Zeichen genau: einem Begriff entspricht: Soll bisher nicht Geschriebenes fixiert werden, müssen meist neue Zeichen her. Da die Chinesen bei ihrer Art zu schreiben seit mehr als 3000 Jahren blieben, entstanden so bis heute mehr als 50000 Zeichen. Kein Mensch kann sich das merken. Deshalb gingen viele Schriften schon bald zur Silbendarstellung über: Hier sieht ein Zeichen nicht mehr bildhaft für einen ganzen Begriff, sondern für eine bestimmte Wortsilbe. So lassen sich die Zeichensätze doch deutlich vereint en. Die ursprünglichen Bilder abstrahieren zu Symbolen. Auch das geschah sicher unabhängig voneinander gleich mehrfach auf der Welt. Und ebenso herrscht weitgehend Einvernehmen darüber, dass erst die griechische Schrift die vollkommene Abstraktion zur reinen Buchstabenschrift vollzog, bei der mit wenigen Zeichen alles ausdrückbar ist, was je nur gesagt oder gedacht werden kann. Doch wie kam es dazu? Die gängige Erklärung sieht als Wurzel die westsemitischen Konsonantenschriften, welche vor etwas mehr als 3000 Jahren aus der einfachen ägyptischen Verwaltungsschrift folgten. Eine davon, die phönikische, schuf eine Vorform der Alphabetschrift, indem sie Wörter als Folge von Lauten behandelte und diesen jeweils Zeichen zuordnete. Aber erst die Griechen perfektionierten das System und bezogen konsequent auch die Vokale ein. Freilich gibt es da noch eine alteuropäische Linearschrift, die Ende des 6. Jahrtausends v Chr. im östlichen Donauraum entstand und bis Mitte des 4. Jahrtausends verwendet wurde. Ist das die älteste Schrift der Welt, wie manche glauben? Für Spekulationen jedenfalls war sie immer mal wieder gut: Nach ihrem durch Kriege bedingten Ende auf dem Balkan könnte sie die in der griechischen Inselwelt entstehenden Systeme beeinflusst haben; welche dann ab 2000 v Chr. auch in Mesopotamien (Irak) bekannt wurden. Sie könnten das hebräische, arabische und phönizische Schrifttum mit beeinflusst haben."
