    Abstract
    Quantitativer Umfang des Bestandes Dass die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München (BSB) eine bedeutende Sammlung an Handschriften besitzt und die an Exemplaren reichste Inkunabelsammlung aufzuweisen hat, ist allgemein bekannt. Demgegenüber weit weniger bekannt dürfte die Tatsache sein, dass dort auch umfangreiche Bestände anderer Bibliotheken auf Mikrofilm bzw. Mikrofiche vorhanden sind, die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten von Firmen wie World Microfilm Publications kommerziell vertrieben und von der BSB erworben wurden. Dabei handelt es sich - grob geschätzt - um 6.000 Handschriften (ohne Musikhandschriften) und über 5.000 Inkunabeln auf insgesamt ca. 1.850 Filmrollen und knapp 25.000 Mikrofiches. Listenartige Erfassungsmöglichkeiten Die frühesten Erwerbungen wurden in der Handschriftenabteilung im Freihandmagazin aufgestellt; ein Nachweis im Katalog war seinerzeit nicht erfolgt. Der größere - katalogisierte - Teil befand sich hingegen, räumlich getrennt, im allgemeinen Magazin; dieser wurde nach und nach in die Handbibliothek der Handschriftenabteilung (Hbh) verbracht und - zusammen mit den bereits in der Abteilung befindlichen Filmen - mit entsprechenden Signaturen versehen. Am Ende stand der katalogmäßige Nachweis der gesamten Mikroformen. Aufgrund der ursprünglich disparaten Aufstellung und unterschiedlichen Erschließung war es teilweise recht schwierig gewesen, die entsprechenden Verfilmungen (zumal Sammlungen) ausfindig zu machen. Auf der Basis einer bereits vorhandenen Liste wurde daher ein "Verzeichnis der Mikrofilmsammlungen in der Handschriftenabteilung der BSB" analog den Verzeichnissen der Mikroformen zur Geschichte bzw. zur Musikwissenschaft ins Netz gestellt. Unter der Adresse http://www.bsb-muenchen.de/mikro/hand.htm kann man sich einen nach Provenienzen geordneten Überblick über diese wichtigen, bis dato aber zu wenig genutzten Bestände verschaffen.

    This paper reports a computer-assisted printed index emphasizing expanded subject access to the more than 6.000 titles in the Iowa State University Library reference collection. The index displays abbreviated-length records and is designed to complement existing catalogs with a minimum of duplication of information.     Abstract
    MEDLINE is one of the most widely used databases in the world. During 1992, there were over 4.5 million logins at the National Library of Medicine alone. Currently containing over 7.4 million records, almost 3.700 journals are endlessly indexed to prduce weekly updates. Either as searchers or intermediaries, many information professionals get a daily dose of MEDLINE and the accompanying MeSH terminology. But as information professionals, how much do we really know about MEDLINE? For example: When we attach a particular subheading to a MeSH term, what slice of the MEDLINE pie are we selecting, one with 6.000 or 600.000 records? It we search topics using age-related check tags, how does this influence search results? What percentage of MEDLINE is related to nursing topics? Would another database more appropriate? If a client wants only citations to reviews articles, what portion of the database is eliminated?

    Abstract
    Die Geschichte der Bibliothek der Philosophisch-Theologischen Hochschule in Benediktbeuern geht wie die Hochschule selbst auf das Jahr 1931 zurück, als die Salesianer Don Boscos, eine Ordensgemeinschaft der katholischen Kirche, das ehemalige Kloster Benediktbeuern, welches zum Säkularisationsgut geworden war, vom Staat erwarben, um dort eine theologische Studienanstalt für den eigenen Nachwuchs einzurichten. Daraus ist mittlerweile eine staatlich anerkannte Hochschule mit Promotions- und Habilitationsrecht geworden. Und ebenso hat sich auch die Hochschulbibliothek über die nun mehr als siebzig Jahre ihres Bestehens aus den bescheidenen Anfängen heraus zu einem der zahlreichen modernen, wenn auch kleinen Dienstleistungsbetrieben, die die kirchlichen Bibliotheken in der Bibliothekslandschaft des deutschsprachigen Raums darstellen, entwickelt. Keinem der großen Bibliotheksverbünde aktiv angeschlossen umfasst sie derzeit über 330.000 Bände, hält ca. 650 laufende Zeitschriften und verfügt über einen Vermehrungsetat für Bücher und Zeitschriften von rund 77.000 ?. 3,3 Personalstellen sind für die Neueinstellung von ca. 6.000 Einheiten, die Bearbeitung von ca. 1.000 passiven Fernleihen, etwa 13.000 Ortsausleihen und für die Versorgung von ca. 650 Benutzern zweier Hochschulen mit weiteren Informationen zuständig; denn neben der PTH hat sich seit 1970 in Benediktbeuern auch eine Abteilung der Katholischen Stiftungsfachhochschule München in den Räumen des Klosters eingemietet, um ein gemeinsames und bundesweit einmaliges Doppelstudium von Diplom-Theologie und Sozialer Arbeit anzubieten.
