- Abstract
- Outlines previous work done in the field of compatibility between indexing langugaes (IL), and describes the scope, limitations and advantages of establishing compatibility between IL. Suggests methods for verbal comparisons between IL as well as generation of an alphabetical comparison matrix M1. Conceptual comparisons, however, demand a conceptual reorganization of M1 into a compatibiliy matrix M2 with its two alternatices, namely a system-related matrix M3 and a hierarchical matrix M4. In conclusion, the use of a compatibility matrix and organizational problems are described

- Abstract
- The index to the second edition of The Canadian Encyclopedia was prepared on an IBM PC-XT personal computer using the IBM Professional Editor, custom programs written in IBM Pascal, and TeX a high quality typesetting program developed by Donald E. Knuth of Stanford University in California. The entries were chosen and keyed in by the indexer, and then alphabetized, formatted, and typeset by the computer. An unusual data entry format together with good typesetting software made possible the delivery to the printer of the 372 page camera ready index less than two weeks after the indexer received the final pages of text. TeX provides fully automatic pagination.

- Abstract
- Bibliographic records available in WLN (Western Library Network, formerly Washington Library Network) for works which are both by and about authors or artists are evaluated to show the inconsistency in the assignment by descriptive and subject catalogers of subject headings and author access points. The physical description and classification of these works is also examined in relation to its relevance in online use/retrieval. Bibliographic records created over a decade or more illustrate this persistent problem of access which affects retrieval in both DIALOG and WLN online systems as well as in card catalogs. The article includes suggestions for catalogers, particularly those working with art or literature subjects, to improve the situation.
