- A project to design a graphical user interface for the OKAPI online catalogue search system which uses the basic term weighting probabilistic search engine. Presents a research context of the project with a discussion of interface and functionality issues relating to the design of OPACs. Describes the design methodology and evaluation methodology. Presents the preliminary results of the field trial evaluation. Considers problems encountered in the field trial and discusses contributory factors to the effectiveness of interactive query expansion. Highlights the tension between usability and functionality in highly interactive retrieval and suggests further areas of research

- Abstract
- Reports results of a study to compare 3 CD-ROM interfaces working on MEDLINE databases: SPIRS (ver. 3.11) and WinSPIRS (ver. 1.0) from SilverPlatter and OVID (ver. 3.0, DOS and WINDOWS interfaces) from CD Plus Technologies (now OVID Technologies). Though the database is the same, there are substantial differences between the interfaces in the way the data is presented and can be searched. Discusses these different approaches and includes a detailed comparative table. Concludes that all 3 interfaces are good yet none of them is perfect; each has desirable and unfortunate features. Together, they offer an enormous range of possibilities. Users would benefit if most of the better features listed (such as easy menu, free text retrieval, pre exploded thesaurus terms) were implemented in future versions of these interfaces and if system operators were given greater latitude to determine the system defaults appropriate to their specific situations and customers. A full, comparative table of features are presented for SPIRS, WinSPIRS, OVID(DOS) and OVID(Windows)

- Abstract
- Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usability of a web-based OPAC (WebPAC) user interface at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). It also looks at the applicability of heuristic evaluation in designing a user-centered WebPAC interface. Design/methodology/approach - Based on Nielsen's ten usability heuristic principles, the study focuses on three heuristics only, i.e. aesthetic and minimalist design, match between interface and the real world, and visibility of interface status. Findings - Results of the study found that the WebPAC interface conforms to at least 70 percent usability properties prescribed. Usability problems violated in the interface were identified. Practical implications - The study suggests that heuristic evaluation is applicable in libraries to asses the usability of user interface for online catalogs. Originality/value - Heuristic evaluation could assist libraries in designing user-centered interface for online catalogs.

- Abstract
- A new search paradigm, in which the primary user activity is the guided exploration of a complex information space rather than the retrieval of items based on precise specifications, is proposed. The author claims that this paradigm is the norm in most practical applications, and that solutions based on traditional search methods are not effective in this context. He then presents a solution based on dynamic taxonomies, a knowledge management model that effectively guides users to reach their goal while giving them total freedom in exploring the information base. Applications, benefits, and current research are discussed.

- Describes SIFT (Search in Free Text) an information retrieval system originally developed for administering governmental documents in Norway but which is now being applied alsewhere. SIFT handles structured information well. A library system, SIFT-BIBL, is now available. SIFT's retrieval engine and search facilities are powerful. Its user interface is limited but being imporved. An application programmer interface has been released which will allow programmers to develop their own interface. A Windows-based- client-server version is now being beta tested

- Abstract
- The authors describe user interface tools based on search histories to support legal information seekers. The design of the tools was informed by the results of a user study (Komlodi, 2002a) that examined the use of human memory, external memory aids, and search histories in legal information seeking and derived interface design recommendations for information storage and retrieval systems. The data collected were analyzed to identify potential task areas where search histories can support information seeking and use. The results show that many information-seeking tasks can take advantage of automatically and manually recorded history information. These findings encouraged the design of user interface tools building on search history information: direct search history displays, history-enabled scratchpad facilities, and organized results collection tools.

- Abstract
- User interfaces of Web search engines reflect attributes of the underlying tools used to create them, rather than what we know about how people look for information. In this article, the author examines several characteristics of user search behavior: the variety of information-seeking goals, the cultural and situational context of search, and the iterative nature of the search task. An analysis of these characteristics suggests ways that interfaces can be redesigned to make searching more effective for users.

- Abstract
- The search tools familiar from the personal computer are propagating to mobile devices. Are users willing to type keywords with the limited keypad of an ordinary mobile phone? How does mobile search differ from stationary search? The author found that users are surprisingly willing to use search also with the traditional phone keypad, and foresees a search revolution as mobile devices enable location-based search.
