    Wer etwa zu Mozart recherchiert, soll künftig mit Hilfe der Meta-Datenbank auf das mühsame Aufrufen verschiedener Seiten verzichten können. Sowohl Musikdateien als auch biografische und wissenschaftliche Arbeiten stehen den Usern über eine Suchmaschine zur Verfügung. Hinzu kommen Briefe, Manuskripte und Porträts. In ähnli- cher Weise soll die Abbildung einzelner Epochen etwa der Architek- turgeschichte oder der bildenden Kunst funktionieren. Insgesamt 90 Partnerinstitute aus ganz Europa haben die entsprechenden Daten bereitgestellt - darunter auch das Bundesarchiv und die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek. De- ren Generaldirektorin Elisabeth Niggemann hatte im Februar anlässlich der Präsentation des Projektes erklärt, dass die Europeana die europäische Informationsgesellschaft stärke. "Damit kommen wir dem Traum von der Verfügbarkeit des Weltwissens auf Knopfdruck einen wichtigen Schritt näher. Was das geschriebene Wort angeht, sind die Ambitionen besonders groß. Hier reicht die Bandbreite vom Original der Gutenberg-Bibel bis hin zu in Deutschland zurzeit nicht erhältlichen Werken zahlreicher Schriftsteller. Texte wurden zunächst in allen 23 offiziellen Sprachen der Europäischen Union eingelesen - mit der Option, später auch auf Werke zurückzugreifen, die in regionalen Dialekten oder in Mundart verfasst sind. Schon in zwei Jahren soll die Gesamtzahl der digitalisierten Objekte laut Reding auf sechs bis zehn Millionen anwachsen. Mit ihrem ehrgeizigen Ansatz tritt die virtuelle Zentralbibliothek ganz nebenbei auch in Konkurrenz zum Internet-Giganten Google, Dessen Mammutprojekt, eine Datenbank fur digitalisierte Bücher anzulegen, versucht Europeana in den Schatten zu stellen. An die Grenzen seiner Möglichkeiten freilich stößt das Portal bei Werken aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit, denn der Urheberschutz muss beachtet werden. Es existieren jedoch Überlegungen, im Einzelfall spezielle Internet-Lizenzen mit Rechteinhabern auszuhandeln."

    Abstract
    BASE (https://www.base-search.net) ermöglicht seit Anfang April eine Suche nach über 90 Millionen Dokumenten, deren Metadaten von über 4.200 Dokumentenservern (Repositories) wissenschaftlicher Institutionen weltweit bereit gestellt werden. Damit ist BASE nach Google Scholar die größte Suchmaschine für wissenschaftliche, frei im Internet verfügbare Dokumente. Für über 30 Mio. Dokumente, die in BASE zu finden sind, können wir aufgrund von Informationen in den Metadaten einen Open-Access-Status ausweisen, insgesamt schätzen wir den Open-Access-Anteil derzeit auf 60%. Über ein Boosting-Verfahren werden Nachweise zu Open-Access-Dokumenten bevorzugt angezeigt, ebenso ist ein gezieltes Suchen unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener Lizenz- und Rechteangaben möglich. Der BASE-Index steht über verschiedene Schnittstellen zahlreichen anderen kommerziellen und nicht-kommerziellen Discovery-Systemen, Suchmaschinen, Datenbankanbietern, Fachbibliotheken und Entwicklern zur Nachnutzung zur Verfügung.
