    Abstract
    Shows the possibilities that exist to create a basic hypertext interface for a thesaurus management system. The project has been built in 3 stages: conceptual data model for the thesaurus; development of the management tools, that is, the thesaurus management system; and the hypertext interfaces. The system has been developed on Windows and combines the power of relational database management systems and the navigational flexibility of Guide, a hypertext shell. presents 2 interface models. Concludes that hypertext interfaces improve management, and open a new path for knowledge organization research

    Abstract
    Investigates how linkage environments in a hypertext based bibliographic retrieval system affect retrieval performance for novice and experienced searchers, 2 systems, 1 with inter record linkages to authors and descriptors and 1 that also included title and abstract keywords, were tested. No significant differences in retrieval performance and system usage were found for most search tests. The enhanced system did provide better performance where title and abstract keywords provided the most direct access to relevant records. The findings have implications for the design of bilbiographic information retrieval systems using hypertext linkages

    Abstract
    The purpose of this research was to investigate whether skills and knowledge might be transferable between hypermedia systems as is the case with conventional paper based materials. Students were trained in the use of one hypermedia system and given extensive experience in its application. In a series of tests measuring levels of domain specific knowledge, the performances of students in using this very familiar hypermedia system and a relatively unknown system were compared. The results from this testing revealed that there were no significant differences achieved in either levels of success or efficiency with which the systems were applied

    Abstract
    We present in this paper a navigation approach using a combination of functionalities encountered in classification processes, Hypertext Systems and Information Retrieval Systems. its originality lies in the cooperation of these mechanisms to restrict the consultation universe, to locate faster the searched information, and to tackle the problem of disorientation when consulting the restricted Hypergraph of retrieved information. A first version of the SYRIUS system has been developed integrating both Hypertext and Information Retrieval functionalities that we have called Hypertext Information Retrieval System (H.I.R.S.). This version has been extended using classification mechanisms. The graphic interface of this new system version is presented here. Querying the system is done through common visual representation of the database Hypergraph. The visualization of the Hypergraph can be parameterized focusing on several levels (classes, links,...)

    Abstract
    Reports on research which aims to discover the path patterns through which users retrieve information in hypertext systems. Takes a pragmatic approach in which the use of a hypertext information retrieval system by a group of subjects was monitored to collect path pattern data. Two frequency distribution models were developed and tested using these data. Path length followed a shifted negative minimal distribution. The influence of search tasks on path patterns was examined and found to have no effect. These models can provide a background for examination of systems via stimulation studies

    Discusses 3 levels of requirements for testing hypertext applications: the validation of the information contained in each node of the hypertext; the verification of the correctness of the implementation of the links between the nodes; and the evaluation of the system structure for testing the usability.     Abstract
    This article examines searcher behavior and affective response to a hypertext-based bibliographic information retrieval system called HyperLynx for searchers with different search skills and backgrounds. Search times and number of nodes visited were recorded for five specified search queries, and views of the system were recorded for each searcher. No significant differences were found in search times or user satisfaction with the system, indicating that a hypertext-based approach to bibliographic retrieval could be appropriate for a variety of searcher experience levels

    Abstract
    Modern hypertext applications require new system support for hypertext authoring and user navigation through large sets of documents connected by links. This system support must be based on advanced, typed data models for describing the information structure in different application domains. Schema based structuring through strongly typed documents and links has already been proposed and put to practical use in a multitude of hypertext applications. Systems such as Multicard/O2 and MORE have moreover exploited conceptual schemas for querying the resulting hyperdocuments in a more structured way. Shows how hypertext schemas and query languages can be utilized for designing hypertext authoring and browsing environments for large hypertexts. Illustrates mechanisms using the Gram data model and describes their implementation on top of the Multicard hypermedia system connected to the O2 object oriented database management system

    Abstract
    In a hypertext database, the information is presented as a network of nodes connected by links. Such nodes may be text, graphics, audio, video, and even other software. Although hypertext provides a new approach to information management, it also leaves a whole new set of problems for the designers of the hypertext database to solve. As the volume of information grows, the task of authoring a hypertext database becomes much more complex. In this article, the author presents the experiences during the development of a hypertext version of the user's guide for information services on JANET, in the UK, by using HyperPAD, a hypertext shell for the IBM PC. It may be the first step to explore the proper way to solve those problems which come together with the increasing application of hypertext

    Part of a special issue on hypertext and information retrieval. Conventional information retrieval systems provide little support for browsing. Browsing is the major method of searching in hypertext system but users can become disoriented even when browsing small information space. If hypertext is to be used to support browsing in bibliographic databases navigational assistance will be required.     Abstract
    Current hypertext systems have been widely and effectively used on relatively small data volumes. Explores the potential of database technology for aiding the implementation of hypertext systems holding very large amounts of complex data. Databases meet many requirements of the hypermedium: persistent data management, large volumes, data modelling, multi-level architecture with abstractions and views, metadata integrated with operational data, short-term transaction processing and high-level end-user languages for searching and updating data. Describes a system implementing the storage, retrieval and recall of trails through hypertext comprising textual complex objects (to illustrate the potential for the use of data bases).
