    Abstract
Reports on the results of a transaction analysis and user survey, evaluating a pilot system for computerized community information in a public library, based on the GDIS system (Gemeenschaps Informatie Documentair System). The non hierarchical and global approach to the integrated database proved to be useful for novice users. Out of many parameters only frequency of use correlates with retrieval success. The online questionnaire proved to be worthwhile although restricted in scope. The logbook transaction analysis yielded a rich amount of useful management information for the systems managers. The user survey yielded a rich set of data on which to perform statistical analyses according to social science practice, from which some interesting relations could be detected

    Abstract
The University Library Groningen, COWOG (Centre for Research on Higher Education) and PICA developed a computer assisted bibliographic reference and advisory system (CoBRA). It is an expert system that advises users of the University Library when they want to execute a search for literature on a certain subject. In fact, it produces custom made guides to the literature in the library. Explained is why the system has been built, the architecture of the system is outlined and some comments are made on aspects of implementing such a system, and the need for library cooperation to build expert systems

    Abstract
Asserts that UK public libraries are now busier than ever and are facing higher public expectations of the services on offer. Explores some of the possible reasons for this. Government initiatives including the Citizen's Charter, as well as fundamental changes in all areas of the education systems, are highlighted as being major contributions to the changes in usage. The introduction of the National Curriculum, the impact of open learning courses and reduced personal and instituional spending power within academic libraries have prompted both teachers and students to turn in increasing numbers to the public reference library. Discusses some of the implications for the management of theses services and outlines some possible strategies for the future

    Abstract

    Abstract
The reference information files at several UCLA libraries were merged and prepared for conversion to machine-readable form under a Council on Library Resources grant. The database structure was conceived using the following factors: data elements, field indexes, syndetic structure, and the possible future sharing of files with the Los Angeles Public Library. Information was entered into a microcomputer using Inmagic, a sophisticated text management system that includes among its features Boolean searching, extensice indexing capabilities, and variable length fields. Future implementation of Infofile will depend on funding, but may include translation into ORION, the UCLA online catalog

    Abstract
Selecting electronic resources requires both a policy statement to guide collection development and management and procedures to manage the process of selecting and handling these resources. Both policy and procedures must be crafted in response to local priorities, resources, limitations, and organizational structure. This paper examines issues that should be addressed when developing local procedures. Particular emphasis is given to preparing a mechanism to guide selection. One possible model - a decision-making matrix to guide selection between various media and modes of information delivery - is explored.

    Abstract
In order to provide researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, DC, with access to information resources at their desk tops, the Ruth H. Hooker Research Library and Technical Information Center of the NRL installed a networked information utility called InfoNet. Using a single menuing system, the InfoNet is available from anywhere on the campus FDDI/Ethernet network. Researchers using any type of computing workstation or dumb terminal are provided with access to CD-ROM databases, the library's online catalogue, laboratory management information database, and state of the art Knowbot prototypes to search the Internet. The InfoNet also makes extensive use of Internet electronic mail to provide Alias accounts, ListServ forums, and to send search results to end users. The InfoNet system hardware and software consists entirely of industry standard components and makes extensive use of the TCP/IP suite of protoclos

    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a class of systems called Information Management Assistants (IMAs). IMAs automatically discover related material on behalf of the user by serving as an intermediary between the user and information retrieval systems. IMAs observe users interact with everyday applications and then anticipate their information needs using a model of the task at hand. IMAs then automatically fulfill these needs using the text of the document the user is manipulating and a knowledge of how to form queries to traditional information retrieval systems (e.g., Internet search engines, abstract databases, etc.). IMAs automatically query information systems on behalf of users as well as provide an interface by which the user can pose queries explicitly. Because IMAs are aware of the user's task, they can augment their explicit query with terms representative of the context of this task. In this way, IMAs provide a framework for bringing implicit task context to bear on servicing explicit information requests, significantly reducing ambiguity. IMAs embody a just-in-time information infrastructure in which information is brought to users as they need it, without requiring explicit requests. In this paper, we present our work on an architecture for this class of system, and our progress implementing Watson, a prototype of such a system. Watson observes users in word processing and Web browsing applications and uses a simple model of the user's tasks, knowledge of term importance, and an understanding of query generation to find relevant documents and service explicit queries. We close by discussing our experimental evaluations of the system

    Abstract
The Maricopa County Library Center, Phoenix, Ariz., established a computerized vertical file when it opened in 1991. The vertical file was introduced to hold the reference library's pamphlets in vertical file folders. Computerized records are created for the vertical file items and the subject headings assigned to the items are merged with the same subject headings for other formats in the computerized catalogue database. Four criteria were followed when creating and maintaining the vertical file: emphasis of quality over quantity; bibliographic control over each item, development of easy user access to materials; and periodic review for weeding and selection purposes. Describes the use of Pro-Cite as a bibliographic database management system for pamphlets and the method of providing subject access through MARC record templates in the DRA (Data Research Associates) computerized catalogue. Describes procedures for conducting the annual review of the vertical file contents and the results of the first review conducted

    Abstract
This work tackles one of the fundamental problems of information management - how to get the right information to the right person at the right time. It provides a practical framework to enable information services to gather information from users in order to aid information system design, and to monitor the effectiveness of an information service. This new edition has been fully revised and now has increased coverage of the Internet. The Web raises many problems when it comes to meeting information needs - authority and overload, for example - and these problems make an effective information needs analysis even more crucial. There is a new methodology section on Web log analysis and focus group interviews. Practical advice is given concerning interview technique and an interview schedule is included.
