- Abstract
- OPACs (Online Public Access Catalogues) sind heute meist der einzige Zugang zu den Beständen einer Bibliothek, doch zeigt die Praxis, dass viele Nutzer Probleme bei der Bedienung elektronischer Kataloge haben. Ein guter OPAC muss deshalb über ein durchdachtes Online-Hilfesystem verfügen. Die Arbeit leistet eine Bestandsaufnahme und kritische Diskussion der an deutschen Universitäts-OPACs implementierten Online-Hilfesysteme. Außer den verschiedenen Formen von Hilfetexten werden dabei auch Hilfen wie Rechtschreibkorrektur, Suchergebnisfilter und Recommender miteinbezogen. Grundlagen der Analyse sind zum einen eine funktionsbezogene Klassifikation der Hilfen, zum anderen die Einführung der Begriffe Effektivität und Effizienz, die als Parameter zur Bestimmung des Nutzens eines Hilfesystems dienen. Als Ergebnis der Untersuchung stellt die Autorin Prinzipien eines effizienten Hilfesystems vor. Das Buch richtet sich an Leser aus den Bereichen Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen sowie Mensch-Maschine-Kommunikation.

- Abstract
- Obwohl fast alle größeren Bibliotheken intellektuelle Sacherschließung betreiben, sind elektronische Kataloge für die zielgerichtete sachliche Suche nur eingeschränkt nutzbar. Durch maschinelle Indexierung können ohne nennenswerten personellen Mehraufwand ausreichend große Datenmengen für Informationsretrievalsysteme erzeugt und somit die Auffindbarkeit von Dokumenten erhöht werden. Geeignete Sprachanalysetechniken zur Indextermerzeugung sind bekannt und bieten im Gegensatz zur gebräuchlichen Freitextinvertierung entscheidende Vorteile beim Retrieval. Im Fokus steht die Betrachtung der Vor- und Nachteile der gängigen Indexierungssysteme MILOS und intelligentCAPTURE.

- Abstract
- Mehr als 130 gleichzeitig durchsuchbare Kataloge und Sammlungen sowie Links zu rund 80 digitalen Sammlungen von 19 europäischen Nationalbibliotheken, das ist das aktuelle Angebot von The European Library. Darüber hinaus bietet dieses Portal der Konferenz der Europäischen Nationalbibliothekare (Conference of European National Librarians, CENL) umfassende Informationen zu den 45 europäischen Nationalbibliotheken aus 43 Ländern, die in CENL vertreten sind. The European Library ist aus dem gleichnamigen, von der Europäischen Union (EU) teilfinanzierten Projekt hervorgegangen, das im Februar 2004 erfolgreich abgeschlossen und danach in den Echtbetrieb überführt wurde. Unter dem Dach der CENL wird The European Library an der Königlichen Bibliothek in Den Haag von einem Team weiterentwickelt und gepflegt, das aus sieben Personen besteht. Finanziert wird dieser Service von den europäischen Nationalbibliotheken: von den derzeit 19 Vollmitgliedern von The European Library sowie mit einem Teil des CENL-Jahresbeitrags aller Nationalbibliotheken. Mittelfristiges Ziel ist, alle CENL-Bibliotheken als Vollmitglieder in den Service von The European Library einzubinden, das heißt alle Kataloge und Sammlungen aller 45 Bibliotheken integriert suchbar zu machen.

- Abstract
- Während die Formalerschließung alter Drucke, nicht zuletzt durch die groß angelegten Fördermaßnahmen der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft in den 80er und 90er Jahren, massiv vorangetrieben wurden, blieb es um die Sacherschließung alter Drucke lange Zeit vergleichsweise still. Erst die Göttinger, Hallenser und vor allem Berliner Bemühungen um die Einbringung der alten Realkataloge in den OPAC schärften wieder das Bewusstsein für das Potential, das eine Konversion alter Sachkataloge birgt. In vielen Altbestandsbibliotheken liegen ältere und neuere Sachkataloge in gedruckter Form oder als Kartenkatalog vor. Wahrnehmung und Nutzung dieser Kataloge ist jedoch im Zeitalter der elektronischen Informationsvermittlung und -versorgung meist gering. Eine systematische Retrokonversion könnte die Situation verbessern helfen. Ziel des Referates ist es, Aktivitäten zur Konversion von alten Realkatalogen und anderen Sacherschließungsinstrumenten an verschiedenen Altbestandsbibliotheken vorzustellen und Vorschläge zur Optimierung und Abstimmung dieser Prozesse zu machen.

- Abstract
- Wie bereits vor einiger Zeit im BIBLIOTHEKDIENST berichtet, wurde der Neubau der UB Kiel am 1. Dezember 2000 fertiggestellt. Der Umzug der ca. 100 Mitarbeiter und über 1 Million Bücher dauerte vier Monate. Bis auf drei Schließungstage wurde der normale Betrieb auch während dieser Zeit vollständig aufrechterhalten - eine logistische Herausforderung, verbunden mit einem wesentlich erhöhten Arbeitsaufwand. Eine Ausnahme gab es dennoch: die Zettelkataloge. Sie konnten wir getrost stehen lassen bzw. - pietätlos ausgedrückt - entsorgen. Pünktlich zum realen Umzug war auch die retrospektive Konversion abgeschlossen: Die Benutzerkataloge sind allesamt digitalisiert und bilden jetzt einen alles umfassenden Online-Katalog der Zentralbibliothek. Den ursprünglich für die Zettelkataloge vorgesehenen Platz nehmen nun zusätzliche Benutzercomputer für die Katalogrecherche und Bestellung ein
