- Abstract
- A discussion of the importance of clear cataloguing policies and routines as the basis of quality control, in relation to the methods used in the College of Mexico Library. The fundamental principle is to prevent errors occuring rather than to correct them subsequently. Indices of quality and effiency in relation to errors which do and do not affect retrieval, established through monthly review of samples of the work of each cataloguer, are used to monitor activities and ensure high standards. This process, essentially collaborative, promotes an overall culture of quality

- Abstract
- Reports of a study in a Chilean university library, comparing 100 users of online databases and CD-ROMs with 100 users of non-computerized bibliographical resources. Results showed that users tended to be teachers / researchers, and potential users were postgraduate students. Comparison of search results showed online searching improved results and saved time. The chief reasons for non-use were ignorance of the service and use of own personal computer. The study indicated the need to review policy on database acquisition and improve promotion of the service. In general, librarians should motivate greater use of online searching by providing skilled intermediary services to maximize uptake

- Abstract
- A review of the literature. Authority control is intended to improve precision and recall but high failure rates detected during online catalogue searches by end users has given rise to debate about whether the time and effort involved in this approach is justified. Suggested solutions include using a combination of indexing techniques, increasing access points, greater standardisation of formats and more powerful software. Cooperative programmes at national and international levels can reduce costs. In Latin America some libraries use US / European formats, while others have developed their own local or regional systems; the whole situation needs to be reviewed to resolve the anomalies

Covers the interdisciplinary background and vocabulary; the representation-retrieval chain; and practice of information retrieval from a semantic-cognitve point of view.
