    Makes a proposal for the optimization of first generation online catalogues which tries to unify the different institutional projects for the establishment of simplified ISBD standards and MARC formats, as well as the results of occasional studies and researches on cataloguing codification. Offers a feasible solution, for immediate application, for a definitive transition from card catalogue to automated catalogue

    Abstract
    A review of the literature. Authority control is intended to improve precision and recall but high failure rates detected during online catalogue searches by end users has given rise to debate about whether the time and effort involved in this approach is justified. Suggested solutions include using a combination of indexing techniques, increasing access points, greater standardisation of formats and more powerful software. Cooperative programmes at national and international levels can reduce costs. In Latin America some libraries use US / European formats, while others have developed their own local or regional systems; the whole situation needs to be reviewed to resolve the anomalies

    Abstract
    Considers the issues of the filing order of bibliographic catalog entries as it relates to information retrieval. Discusses the main problems created by filing order in computerized catalogues and analyses the codes drawn up by the Library of Congress, the British Library and the American Library Association. Describes the efforts made by IFLA and ISO to arrive at greater international Uniformity of filing order rules. The resulting standards ISO 7154-1983 (Bibliographic filing principles) and ISO/TR 8393-1985 (Bibliographic filing rules) are described. Discusses the position of Spanish cataloguing rules in relation to these international standards
