    "In einer öffentlichen Bücherei ist die Suche nach einem Werk recht einfach: Man geht einfach die Regale ab, bis man beim richtigen Buchstaben oder Thema angekommen ist. In vielen wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken ist das komplizierter. Denn dort müssen sich Studenten durch Datenbanken und Zettelkataloge wühlen. "Eine Ausnahme ist der Lesesaal, erklärt Marlene Grau, Sprecherin der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Hamburg. Im Lesesaal stehen die Bücher wie in einer öffentlichen Bibliothek in Reih und Glied nach Fachgebieten wie Jura, Biologie oder Medizin sortiert. So können Studenten ein wenig schmökern und querbeet lesen. Wer jedoch ein bestimmtes Werk sucht, nutzt besser gleich den Katalog der Bibliothek. Darin lässt sich zum einen nach dem Autor oder einem Titelstichwort suchen - in der Biologie etwa "Fliege" oder "Insekt". "Dann kann man hoffen, dass Bücher zum Thema das Stichwort im Titel enthalten", sagt Grau. Die andere Variante ist, nach einem Schlagwort zu suchen. Um das passende zu finden, kann man im Schlagwort-Index blättern. Oder man sucht nach einem bekannten Buch, das zum Thema passt. Dann kann man mit dessen Schlagwörtern weitersuchen. Der Vorteil: Bücher müssen dieses Schlagwort nicht im Titel enthalten. Buchtitel wie 'Keine Angst vor Zahlen' oder 'Grundkurs Rechnen' findet man über die Schlagworte 'Mathematik' und 'Einführung', aber mit Stichworten eher nicht", erklärt Ulrich Hohoff. Er leitet die Universitätsbibliothek in Augsburg.
    Im Online-Katalog erfahren Studenten auch, ob das Buch verfügbar oder verliehen ist. Ist es gerade vergriffen, kann man es vormerken lassen, er- klärt Monika Ziller, Vorsitzen- de des Deutschen Bibliotheksverbands in Berlin. Dann werden die Studenten entsprechend benachrichtigt, wenn es zurückgegeben wurde. Außerdem könnten Studenten virtuelle Fachbibliotheken nutzen, erklärt Grau. Um das Thema Slavistik kümmert sich etwa die Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. Auf der Internetseite kann man über Suchbegriffe alle elektronischen Slavistik-Angebote wie Zeitschriften, E-Books oder Bibliografien durchforsten. Die virtuelle Fachbibliothek spuckt dann eine Titelliste aus. Bestenfalls können Studenten gleich auf einzelne Volltexte der Liste zugreifen. Oder sie müssen schauen, ob die eigene Bibliothek das gesuchte Werk hat. Vor allem Zeitschriften sind oft online im Volltext abrufbar, aber auch Enzyklopädien. "Die sind auch aktueller als der Brockhaus von 1990, der zu Hause im Regal steht" sagt Grau. Manchmal ließen sich die Texte aus Gründen des Urheberrechts aber nur auf den Rechnern auf dem Unicampus lesen, ergänzt Hohoff. Findet man ein Buch nicht, ist der Grund dafür oft ein Fehler, der sich bei der Suche eingeschlichen hat. Das fängt bei der Rechtschreibung an: "Bibliothekskataloge verfügen über keine fehlertolerante Suche wie Google", erklärt Ziller.
    "Ein häufiger Fehler ist auch, bei Google nach Büchern zu suchen", sagt Grau. Die Suchmaschine enthält keine Bibliotheksdaten. Außerdem sollten Studenten darauf achten, ob sie nach einem Zeitschriften-Artikel oder einer Monografie suchen. Benötigt man einen Aufsatz, muss man nach dem Titel der Zeitschrift und nicht nach dem Titel des Artikels suchen. Wichtig ist auch, den Suchschlüssel zu beachten. Wer nach dem Autor Johann Wolfgang von Goethe sucht, aber das Wort in der Titelsuche eingibt, bekommt andere Treffermengen. Studenten sollten die Suche auch nicht zu sehr eingrenzen. "Dann findet man nichts", warnt Grau. Andererseits darf man auch nicht zu allgemein suchen. Wer nach einem Buch zur deutschen Geschichte sucht, bekommt bei der Eingabe von "deutsche Geschichte" Tausende Treffer. "Da muss man den richtigen Suchschlüssel auswählen", erklärt Grau. Wer im Feld "Titelanfänge" etwa "deutsche Geschichte" eingibt, finde alle Titel mit diesen Wörtern in genau dieser Reihenfolge. Er lande also nicht beim Buch "Deutsche Naturlyrik: ihre Geschichte in Einzelanalysen". Das ist bei weit gefassten Begriffen sehr wichtig und hilfreich."

    Abstract
    Diese Arbeit untersucht, wie sich eine Forschungskontext-Ontologie als Quelle für die Generierung von Query-Expansion-Termen in einem Retrievalsystem für die Domäne der Erziehungswissenschaft nutzen lässt. Durch die Kombination traditioneller, groß angelegter automatischer Retrievalexperimente und nutzerzentrierter interaktiver Retievalexperimente wird ein umfassendes Bild der Effekte ontologiebasierter Query Expansion gezeichnet. Während die automatischen Experimente die Expansionseffekte einzelner Arten ontologiebasierter Expansionsterme im Detail untersuchen, beleuchten die interaktiven Experimente, wie ontologiebasierte Expansionsmechanismen das Suchverhalten der Nutzer sowie ihren Sucherfolg beeinflussen.

    Abstract
    The authors report on an experimental study on the differences between spoken and written queries. A set of written and spontaneous spoken queries are generated by users from written topics. These two sets of queries are compared in qualitative terms and in terms of their retrieval effectiveness. Written and spoken queries are compared in terms of length, duration, and part of speech. In addition, assuming perfect transcription of the spoken queries, written and spoken queries are compared in terms of their aptitude to describe relevant documents. The retrieval effectiveness of spoken and written queries is compared using three different information retrieval models. The results show that using speech to formulate one's information need provides a way to express it more naturally and encourages the formulation of longer queries. Despite that, longer spoken queries do not seem to significantly improve retrieval effectiveness compared with written queries.

    Abstract
    This paper describes a new OPAC system called The Book House and discusses its relevance as a solution to current OPAC developments. The Book House is an interactive, multimedia, online public access catalogue system designed to support casual and/or novice end-users in information retrieval. It runs on a Macintosh and is available on CD-ROM and disks in English and Danish (it can be purchased from Risø for $100). It comprises an interface and module for classifying and indexing fact and fiction books in the database called Book House Write. It uses icons, text and animation in the display interface in order to enhance the utility of the system for the general public. Both words and pictures can be used for searching, which makes the system suitable for all age groups. It plays on users' previous experiencees with computer games to support learning by doing something in an enjoyable way. A prerequisite for the design of The Book House was a new approach to cognitive analysis of retrieval in libraries. Based on the success of this approach, it is claimed that OPAC systems will only be really useful and widespread (1) when their domain and task characteristics allow supplementary information to be added to existing descriptions of book content in online card catalogues in order to match end-users' intentions and needs, and (2) when the user interface and routes to the databases are configured as an integrated and uniform set of displays which match the search strategies of users, as well as their mental capabilities and limitations

    Abstract
    Human information-seeking behavior is a topic of increasing interest in many disciplines. However, the dynamics of this behavior remain elusive. The extant research has taken cognitive and behavioral perspectives to study information-seeking behavior, and observed its dynamics in multiple sessions. However, the underlying mechanisms that govern the dynamics of information-seeking behavior are not well understood. With a focus on interactive information retrieval behavior, this study proposes an integrated framework based on activity theory. This framework is not only comprehensive and integrated, but also offers an explanation of the mechanisms governing the interaction between users' cognitive states and their manifested behavior when using an information retrieval system. A set of four propositions are advanced to describe the mechanisms. The implications are discussed.

    Abstract
    Discusses the results of a survey sent to online searchers in the United Kingdom, USA, Australia and Canada. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of national culture on information retrieval skills. The survey form provided a sample question and asked searchers to prepare a preliminary strategy for a search on the Sociological Abstracts online database. Cultural patterns to online searching were discerned. American searchers were found to depend on controlled vocabulary much more than British searchers. Australian searchers seemed to have created a search style of their own, while Canadian searchers blended the American and British patterns. In reviewing results of the searches, over half of the citations retrieved were retrieved by more than one search. Australian searchers were more likely to retrieve items that no other search retrieved, while Canadian searchers had the highest overlap rate. If the theory that citations retrieved by the most searches are the most relevant is correct, then the Canadian searchers prepare the best searches. The Canadian searchers also seemed to be the most international, as their search results overlapped with those from the other 3 countires more often than did searches from other countries. One question contained in the survey asked searchers to suggest related databases for their searches. PAIS and SSCI were the databases mentioned most often in all 4 countires. Nevertheless, cultural differences and ethnocriticism could be discerned in the results with searchers listing databases specifically relating to their own countries or regions: Australian PAIS and US Political Science Abstracts being 2 examples

    Abstract
    Mittels professioneller Suchtechniken lässt sich die Recherche im WWW wesentlich schneller und zuverlässiger gestalten. Selbst eine universelle Suchmaschine, wie Google, erlaubt mittels spezieller Suchfunktionen qualifizierte Recherchen über den Freitext hinaus. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind hier die Selektion nach Domainnamen und die Einbeziehung der URL. In Kombination mit dem Verständnis der Ranking-Techniken, z. B. der Prioritäten der im HTML-Quelltext verankerten inhaltlichen Meta-Informationen (Title-Tag, Meta-Tags Keywords, Description) gegenüber dem Standardverfahren (Google PageRank) lässt sich die Recherche auf professionelle Informationsangebote ausrichten. Eine weitere Qualifizierung lässt sich durch geschickten Einsatz der Phrasensuche erreichen. In jedem Fall setzt eine erfolgreiche Recherche, auch bei scheinbar einfachen Benennungen und Zusammenhängen eine intellektuelle Recherchevorbereitung voraus - bei der zunächst das Thema strukturiert und dann eine Vorstellung über die möglichen Zusammenhänge entwickelt wird, in der die Zielinformation im WWW zu finden sein könnte. Soweit die Möglichkeit besteht, sollte bei anspruchsvollen technischwissenschaftlichen Themen der WWW-Suche eine Recherche in professionellen Literaturdatenbanken vorausgehen. Diese haben den Vorzug, dass eine transparente und sorgfältig selektierte Quellenbasis vorliegt und durch Suche mit kontrolliertem Wortschatz die typischen Unschärfen einer Freitextrecherche (unerwünschte Zusammenhänge, Synonyme, Homonyme, Schreibvarianten usw.) umgangen werden können.     Das zweite Kapitel ("A Brief History of Wayfinding") beschreibt, wie Menschen sich in Umgebungen zurechtfinden. Dies ist insofern interessant, als hier nicht erst bei Informationssystemen oder dem WWW begonnen wird, sondern allgemeine Erkenntnisse beispielsweise über die Orientierung in natürlichen Umgebungen präsentiert werden. Viele typische Verhaltensweisen der Nutzer von Informationssystemen können so erklärt werden. So interessant dieses Thema allerdings ist, wirkt das Kapitel leider doch nur wie eine Zusammenstellung von Informationen aus zweiter Hand. Offensichtlich ist, dass Morville nicht selbst an diesen Themen geforscht hat, sondern die Ergebnisse (wenn auch auf ansprechende Weise) zusammengeschrieben hat. Dieser Eindruck bestätigt sich auch in weiteren Kapiteln: Ein flüssig geschriebener Text, der es jedoch an einigen Stellen an Substanz fehlen lässt. Kapitel drei, "Information Interaction" beginnt mit einem Rückgriff auf Calvin Mooers zentrale Aussage aus dem Jahre 1959: "An information retrieval system will tend not to be used whenever it is more painful and troublesome for a customer to have information than for him not to have it." In der Tat sollte man sich dies bei der Erstellung von Informationssystemen immer vergegenwärtigen; die Reihe der Systeme, die gerade an dieser Hürde gescheitert sind, ist lang. Das weitere Kapitel führt in einige zentrale Konzepte der Informationswissenschaft (Definition des Begriffs Information, Erläuterung des Information Retrieval, Wissensrepräsentation, Information Seeking Behaviour) ein, allerdings ohne jeden Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Es wirkt vielmehr so, dass der Autor sich die gerade für sein Anliegen passenden Konzepte auswählt und konkurrierende Ansätze beiseite lässt. Nur ein Beispiel: Im Abschnitt "Information Interaction" wird relativ ausführlich das Konzept des Berrypicking nach Marcia J. Bates präsentiert, allerdings wird es geradezu als exklusiv verkauft, was es natürlich bei weitem nicht ist. Natürlich kann es nicht Aufgabe dieses Buchs sein, einen vollständigen Überblick über alle Theorien des menschlichen Suchverhaltens zu geben (dies ist an anderer Stelle vorbildlich geleistet worden'), aber doch wenigstens der Hinweis auf einige zentrale Ansätze wäre angebracht gewesen. Spätestens in diesem Kapitel wird klar, dass das Buch sich definitiv nicht an Informationswissenschaftler wendet, die auf der einen Seite mit den grundlegenden Themen vertraut sein dürften, andererseits ein wenig mehr Tiefgang erwarten würden. Also stellt sich die Frage - und diese ist zentral für die Bewertung des gesamten Werks.
    Im Kapitel über das "Sociosemantic Web" werden die groben Grundzüge der Klassifikationslehre erläutert, um dann ausführlich auf neuere Ansätze der Web-Erschließung wie Social Tagging und Folksonomies einzugehen. Auch dieses Kapitel gibt eher einen Überblick als den schon Kundigen vertiefende Informationen zu liefern. Das letzte Kapitel widmet sich schließlich der Art, wie Entscheidungen getroffen werden, der Network Culture, dem Information Overload, um schließlich zu den "Inspired Decisions" zu gelangen - Entscheidungen, die sowohl auf "sachlichen Informationen" (also den klassischen Zutaten der "informed decisions") als auch aus aus Netzwerken stammenden Informationen wie etwa Empfehlungen durch Freunde oder Community-Mitglieder irgendeiner Art gewonnen werden. Fasst man zusammen, so ist an Morvilles Text besonders bemerkenswert, dass nach einigen Jahren, in denen die Suche im Web als ein Problem der Suche in unstrukturierten Daten angesehen wurde, nun wieder verstärkt Erschließungsansätze, die auf klassische Erschließungsinstrumente zurückgreifen, propagiert werden. Zwar sollen sie nicht in ihrer ursprünglichen Form angewandt werden, da den Nutzern nicht zuzumuten ist, sich mit den entsprechenden Regeln auseinanderzusetzen, aber auch hinter der auf den ersten Blick zumindest chaotisch wirkenden Folksonomy ist das Prinzip der Klassifikation zu erkennen. Um die modernen Ansätze erfolgreich zu machen, bedarf es aber dringend Information Professionals, die das "beste aus beiden Welten" verbinden, um moderne, für den Nutzer optimale Informationssysteme zu schaffen. Für die Gesamtbewertung des Buchs gelten die bereits zu einzelnen Kapitels angeführten Kritikpunkte: In erster Linie bleibt das Buch zu sehr an der Oberfläche und wirkt irgendwie "zusammengeschrieben" anstatt als Ergebnis der tiefgreifenden Beschäftigung mit dem Thema. Als eine Einführung in aufkommende Technologien rund um die Suche ist es aber durchaus geeignet - gut lesbar ist der Text auf jeden Fall.

    Abstract
    Suchportale von Bibliotheken haben im Laufe der Zeit immer stärker eine Reduktion auf einfachste Suchmöglichkeiten im Stile von Google erfahren. Das kommt zwar den Gewohnheiten der Nutzer:innen entgegen, schränkt aber die Möglichkeiten einer fundierten Recherche ein. Abhilfe schaffen explorative Suchinstrumente. Damit diese ökonomisch und bedarfsgerecht realisiert werden können, braucht es eine hohe Datenqualität und einen standardisierten Werkzeugkasten zur Umsetzung von Rechercheoberflächen. Anstelle eines Ausbaus der Funktionen von Suchportalen empfiehlt sich daher eine Ausrichtung und Individualisierung zusätzlicher Recherchetools auf konkrete Anwendungskontexte und Nutzertypen.

    Abstract
    Online trolling has become increasingly prevalent and visible in online communities. Perceptions of and reactions to trolling behaviors varies significantly from one community to another, as trolling behaviors are contextual and vary across platforms and communities. Through an examination of seven trolling scenarios, this article intends to answer the following questions: how do trolling behaviors differ across contexts; how do perceptions of trolling differ from case to case; and what aspects of context of trolling are perceived to be important by the public? Based on focus groups and interview data, we discuss the ways in which community norms and demographics, technological features of platforms, and community boundaries are perceived to impact trolling behaviors. Two major contributions of the study include a codebook to support future analysis of trolling and formal concept analysis surrounding contextual perceptions of trolling.

    Abstract
    Information searching in practice seldom is an end in itself. In work, work task (WT) performance forms the context, which information searching should serve. Therefore, information retrieval (IR) systems development/evaluation should take the WT context into account. The present paper analyzes how WT features: task complexity and task types, affect information searching in authentic work: the types of information needs, search processes, and search media. We collected data on 22 information professionals in authentic work situations in three organization types: city administration, universities, and companies. The data comprise 286 WTs and 420 search tasks (STs). The data include transaction logs, video recordings, daily questionnaires, interviews. and observation. The data were analyzed quantitatively. Even if the participants used a range of search media, most STs were simple throughout the data, and up to 42% of WTs did not include searching. WT's effects on STs are not straightforward: different WT types react differently to WT complexity. Due to the simplicity of authentic searching, the WT/ST types in interactive IR experiments should be reconsidered.

    Abstract
    This research investigates how people's perceptions of information retrieval (IR) systems, their perceptions of search tasks, and their perceptions of self-efficacy influence the amount of invested mental effort (AIME) they put into using two different IR systems: a Web search engine and a library system. It also explores the impact of mental effort on an end user's search experience. To assess AIME in online searching, two experiments were conducted using these methods: Experiment 1 relied on self-reports and Experiment 2 employed the dual-task technique. In both experiments, data were collected through search transaction logs, a pre-search background questionnaire, a post-search questionnaire and an interview. Important findings are these: (1) subjects invested greater mental effort searching a library system than searching the Web; (2) subjects put little effort into Web searching because of their high sense of self-efficacy in their searching ability and their perception of the easiness of the Web; (3) subjects did not recognize that putting mental effort into searching was something needed to improve the search results; and (4) data collected from multiple sources proved to be effective for assessing mental effort in online searching.

    Abstract
    In information seeking and retrieval research, researchers often collect data about users' behaviors to predict task characteristics and personalize information for users. The reliability of user behavior may be directly influenced by data collection methods. This article reports on a mixed-methods study examining the impact of study setting (laboratory setting vs. remote setting) and task authenticity (authentic task vs. simulated task) on users' online browsing and searching behaviors. Thirty-six undergraduate participants finished one lab session and one remote session in which they completed one authentic and one simulated task. Using log data collected from 144 task sessions, this study demonstrates that the synthetic lab study setting and simulated tasks had significant influences mostly on behaviors related to content pages (e.g., page dwell time, number of pages visited per task). Meanwhile, first-query behaviors were less affected by study settings or task authenticity than whole-session behaviors, indicating the reliability of using first-query behaviors in task prediction. Qualitative interviews reveal why users were influenced. This study addresses methodological limitations in existing research and provides new insights and implications for researchers who collect online user search behavioral data.
