- Abstract
- Der bis 1999 vom Deutschen Bibliotheksinstitut mit dem Online-System IBAS angebotene Retro-VK liegt jetzt auf fünf CD-ROMs mit dem System Allegro (alcarta) vor. Damit wird die Übernahme von Titelaufnahmen sowohl im MAB2-Format (Download) als auch im Allegro-Format (Download und Copy-Funktion) zum Zwecke der Konversion ermöglicht. Lokaldaten sind nicht enthalten. Ausgangsmaterial sind die im damaligen DBI zusammengeführten Titelaufnahmen bis Erwerbungsjahr 1996 der zu diesem Zeitpunkt sieben Verbundsysteme.

- Im Aisthesis Verlag ist der erste Teil der Bibliografie Brigitte Reimann von Kristina Stella erschienen. Die Bibliografie ist das Ergebnis der jahrelangen Recherchen Stellas in Bibliotheken und Archiven. Das umfangreiche Nachschlagewerk ermöglicht erstmalig einen vollständigen Überblick über das Werk der DDR-Schriftstellerin und dessen Rezeption. Teil A verzeichnet die Primärliteratur und enthält zahlreiche Hintergrundinformationen zu den Werken und deren unterschiedlichen Ausgaben. Der Nachweis der Originalmanuskripte und der umfangreichen Korrespondenz Brigitte Reimanns mit Privatpersonen und Institutionen bietet eine umfassende Übersicht über die in den Archiven vorhandenen Dokumente. Bühnenwerke, Rundfunksendungen, Fernsehsendungen und Veranstaltungen mit Beteiligung von Brigitte Reimann werden in Auswahl nachgewiesen. Teil B dokumentiert die Sekundärliteratur zu den Texten Reimanns sowie die auf die Person Brigitte Reimann bezogenen Publikationen. Der Nachweis der Originaldokumente im Sekundärteil verzeichnet unter anderem die der Forschung zugänglichen Akten des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit. - Abstract
- Die von Wilbert Ubbens und Dr. Willi Höfig im Jahr 1982 begründete und bis zum Jahr 2002 jeweils in Heft 3 dieser Zeitschrift veröffentlichte Bibliographie wird mit der vorliegenden Übersicht fortgesetzt. Die Gliederung nach Schlagwörtern und die Zitierweise wurden weitgehend beibehalten, um sowohl die Orientierung zu erleichtern als auch spätere Hinweise auf diese Bibliographie zu vereinfachen. Wo nötig, wurden wieder erläuternde Hinweise in englischer Sprache hinzugefügt. Für diese Übersicht wurden auch wieder Nachweise aus den verwandten Bereichen der Archive, Dokumentationsstellen und Museen aufgenommen, um die für Zeitungen wünschenswerte spartenübergreifende Zusammenarbeit zu fördern.

- Abstract
- In den weitläufigen Katakomben der einstigen Talmud-Thora-Schule am Grindelhof gab es einen verschlossenen Raum, »...aus dem man sich Diplomarbeiten holen kann, wenn diese in der Fachbereichsbibliothek nicht zu finden oder ausgeliehen sind«, so die Auskunft der Kollegen. In diesem vollgemüllten Raum standen auch klapprige Regale mit Kartons, darin irgendwelche schriftlichen Examensarbeiten in irgendeiner Ordnung. Lediglich eine Teilmenge ( in besonderen Kapseln verschlossen, geordnet und sogar katalogisiert ) war als Jahresarbeiten zwischen 1947 und 1972 von Anwärtern für den gehobenen Dienst an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken zu identifizieren, daneben zugehörige Zeugniszweitschriften und Personalunterlagen. Der erste Griff in den zweiten Karton zauberte Paul Raabes 1948 in Göttingen entstandene Examensarbeit »Von Jöcher zu Ebert : Die deutsche Literaturverzeichnung von 1750-1830« ans Licht, sein Zeugnis, Briefe, Entnazifizierungsunterlagen usw., die ihm wenig später als Kopien zu seinem 60. Geburtstag nach Wolfenbüttel ( »Bibliosibirsk« S. 33-34 ) geschickt wurden. Nach Austausch des Schließzylinders zur Verhinderung weiterer "Entnahmen" entstand in Nebenstunden ( Raabe wußte sie zu schätzen ) eine Ordnung. Zunächst aufgrund gesetzlicher Aufbewahrungsfristen als Archiv für die Studien- und Prüfungsunterlagen angelegt, hatte sich der Bestand bei näherer Einsicht zu einem gewachsenen regionalen, bibliotheks- und ausbildungsgeschichtlichen Schatz entwickelt. Eine kurze ABM-Maßnahme stellte konventionelle Transparenz her und glich die Bestände von Prüfungsarchiv und damaliger Fachbereichsbibliothek ab, der sehr lückenhaft Zweitschriften von besseren Arbeiten zuflossen. Später wurden auch diese Zweitstücke neu aufgestellt und in einer lokalen, selbst gestrickten Datenbank katalogisiert ( wir stehen am Anfang der Bibliotheks-EDV, weit vor PICA oder dergleichen ), so dass Studierende die in der Bibliothek zugängliche Teilmenge des Fleißes ihrer Vorgänger bequem in mehrdimensionalem Zugriff recherchieren konnten. Die gemeinsame, einheitliche und laufende Vergabe von Standortsignaturen in Bibliothek und Prüfungsarchiv für neue Diplomarbeiten wurde über fünfzehn Jahre bis Ende 2005 eingehalten. Ihren Weg in die Bibliothek fanden in diesem Zeitraum rund 80% aller Prüfungsarbeiten des Studiengangs Bibliotheks- und Informationsmanagement und nur 30% der Mediendokumentation. Grund hierfür war, dass im ersten Falle die Studierenden sich nach der Studienordnung nur dann erklären mußten, wenn sie ihre Arbeit nicht in der Bibliothek sehen wollen, und im zweiten genau umgekehrt. Ab 2006 gilt die einheitliche Regelung, nach der jeder Autor sich erklären muß, und, falls er zustimmt, dann seinen elektronischen Volltext der Bibliothek zur Verfügung stellt. Im Prüfungsarchiv wird aufgrund gesetzlicher Vorschriften weiterhin das maßgebliche, vollständige Papierexemplar der Diplomarbeit aufbewahrt werden.
Vor dem Umzug der Bibliothek des ehemaligen Fachbereiches Bibliothek und Information zum Berliner Tor in dort räumlich engere Verhältnisse wurden ohne Absprache alle Arbeiten vor 1991 vernichtet, und auch der Umzug des inzwischen geordneten Prüfungsarchivs zum Berliner Tor war anfangs nicht sicher. Für den bevorstehenden, erneuten Umzug an die Wartenau ist bisher nicht bekannt, ob der hier beschriebene Bestand überleben wird. Ohnehin werden nach Einführung des Bachelor- / Master-Studiums ab WS 2005/2006 nur noch die wenigen Masterarbeiten inhaltlich von Interesse und den Diplomarbeiten vergleichbar sein. Zusammen mit der sukzessiven Neuordnung des Prüfungsarchives dieser Jahres-, Haus- und Diplomarbeiten entstand eine Datenbank von rund 4.600 Datensätzen, die für den Zeitraum von 1947 bis 2005 insgesamt 4.550 tatsächlich erhaltene Arbeiten erfaßt. Die Ordnung von Archiv- und verbliebenem Bibliotheksbestand ist identisch. Alle 3.600 Exemplare des Prüfungsarchivs, deren Zweitstücke nicht ( bzw. nicht mehr ) in der Bibliothek des Berliner Tors vorhanden sind, sind als staatliche Prüfungs- bzw. Examensarbeiten nicht einsehbar und folglich im Alphabetischen Teil durch den Zusatz »Prüfungsarchiv« gekennzeichnet. Mit Recht läßt sich einwenden, warum nicht eine den Gesamtbestand online recherchierbare Lösung "als Vermächtnis" entwickelt wurde, statt der hier vorliegenden langweiligen Liste: Eine vom Kollegen Klaus F. Lorenzen entwickelte Allegro-Datenbank war bis zum Ende 2004 im Internet online zugänglich, wurde aber durch Hacking zerstört, und für ihre weitere Pflege gab es über 2005 hinaus keine Perspektive.

- Abstract
- Patron queries at a four-year comprehensive college's online public access catalog were examined via transaction logs from March 2007. Three representative days were isolated for a more detailed examination of search characteristics. The results show that library users employed an average of one to three terms in a search, did not use Boolean operators, and made use of limits one-tenth of the time. Failed queries remained problematic, as a full one-third of searches resulted in zero hits. Implications and recommendations for improvements in the online public access catalog are discussed.

- Abstract
- The Core Standard for Rare Books, known as the DCRB Core standard, was approved by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging for use beginning in January 1999. Comparable to the core standards for other types of materials, the DCRB Core standard provides requirements for an intermediate level of bibliographic description for the cataloging of rare books. While the Core Standard for Books seems to have found a place in general cataloging practice, the DCRB Core standard appears to have met with resistance among rare book cataloging practitioners. This study investigates the extent to which such resistance exists by examining all of the DCRB Core records in the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) Online Union Catalog (WorldCat) and the Research Libraries Croup Union Catalog (RLIN) databases that were created during the standard's first five years. The study analyzes the content of the records for adherence to the standard and investigates the ways in which the flexibility of the standard and cataloger's judgment augmented many records with more than the mandatory elements of description and access.

- Abstract
- This study is an examination of the overlap between author-assigned keywords and cataloger-assigned Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for a set of electronic theses and dissertations in Ohio State University's online catalog. The project is intended to contribute to the literature on the issue of keywords versus controlled vocabularies in the use of online catalogs and databases. Findings support previous studies' conclusions that both keywords and controlled vocabularies complement one another. Further, even in the presence of bibliographic record enhancements, such as abstracts or summaries, keywords and subject headings provided a significant number of unique terms that could affect the success of keyword searches. Implications for the maintenance of controlled vocabularies such as LCSH also are discussed in light of the patterns of matches and nonmatches found between the keywords and their corresponding subject headings.

- Abstract
- This comprehensive annotated webliography describes online cataloging resources that are free to use, currently updated, and of high quality. The major aim of this webliography is to provide assistance for catalogers who are new to the profession, unfamiliar with cataloging specific formats, or unable to access costly print and subscription resources. The annotated resources include general websites and webpages, databases, workshop presentations, streaming media, and local documentation. The scope of the webliography is limited to resources reflecting traditional cataloging practices using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, RDA: Resource Description and Access, and MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC) standards. Non-MARC metadata schemas like Dublin Core are not covered. Most components of cataloging are represented in this webliography, such as authority control, classification, subject headings, and genre terms. Guidance also is provided for cataloging miscellaneous formats including sound and videorecordings, streaming media, e-books, video games, graphic novels, kits, rare materials, maps, serials, realia, government documents, and music.

- Abstract
- Scholars have long noted the significance of Allegheny College's special collections to American cultural and educational history. Special collections have value to colleges and universities as publicity devices to draw scholars, students, and funding to the institution. Catalogers have an important role to play in marketing the library and the college through improved bibliographic access to these collections. Rare book and manuscript cataloging presents many challenges to catalogers, especially at smaller institutions. This report traces the evolution of Allegheny College's catalog, from book format in 1823, through card format, and finally to online. It also explores the bibliographic challenges created as the library moved from one format to another.

- Abstract
- Cornell University Library (CUL) has developed a largely automated method for providing title-level catalog access to electronic journals made available through aggregator packages. CUL's technique for automated e-journal record creation and maintenance relies largely on the conversion of externally supplied metadata into streamlined, abbreviated-level MARC records. Unlike the Cooperative Online Serials Cataloging Program's recently implemented aggregator-neutral approach to e-journal cataloging, CUL's method involves the creation of a separate bibliographic record for each version of an e-journal title in order to facilitate automated record maintenance. An indexed local field indicates the aggregation to which each title belongs and enables machine manipulation of all the records associated with a specific aggregation. Information encoded in another locally defined field facilitates the identification of all of the library's e-journal titles and allows for the automatic generation of a Web-based title list of e-journals. CUL's approach to providing title-level catalog access to its e-journal aggregations involves a number of tradeoffs in which some elements of traditional bibliographic description (such as subject headings and linking fields) are sacrificed in the interest of timeliness and affordability. URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) and holdings information are updated on a regular basis by use of automated methods that save on staff costs.
