    Abstract
The analytico-synthetic facet methodology (ASM) of S.R.Ranganathan (SRR) helps to improve information retrieval online and on the Internet as well. Yahoo has been foreseen in the subject/query structuring based on ASM. Data mining and discovery, the design, development, use and evaluation of object-oriented databases and knowledge organization tools (KOTs) - faceted classification schemes, thesauri, classaurus, and subject indexing languages - are well supported by ASM. The fundamental nature of SRR's contributions attest to their continuing relevance and value in information storage and retrieval in the context of developments in information technology and the Internet. His theories, postulates and normative principles anchored on the Five Laws provide a holistic integrated approach to research, development and practice in knowledge organization in particular and information science in general. These contributions provide a sound foundation and stability to KOTs. SRR had visualized a self-perpetuating classification system. Computer graphics and imaging could help the examination in three or more dimensions the architecture of subject (and the associated Strength of Bond theory) proposed by SRR and the impact of interpolation of new concepts on the structure

    Abstract
Case records of patients with brain tumours and the related image files (CATSCAN, MRI, X-ray, etc.) are information products generated and used by surgeons. A system has been developed to navigate within case records and link an to related image files. Hypertext links to relevant Web resources an brain tumours are also provided for from the case records. The collaborative and semantic dimensions of the knowledge base development are mentioned. Some 20 fields record administrative data and some 160 fields describe the characteristics of the tumour, its diagnosis, surgery, post-surgical complications, etc. This knowledge base forms part of a total system that includes three other databases of case sheets of patients (with tumours of the pituitary, spinal cord, and trauma), a bibliographic database, profiles of institutions, experts and projects.

    Abstract
Mapping a multidimensional universe of subjects for linear representation, such as in class number, subject heading, and faset structure is problematic. Into this context is recalled the near-seminal and postulational approach suggested by S. R Ranganathan. The non-hierarchical associative relationship or lateral relationship (LR) is distinguished at different levels-among information sources, databases, records of databases, and among concepts (LR-0). Over thirty lateral relationships at the concept level (LR-0) are identified and enumerated with examples from spiritual and religious texts. Special issues relating to LR-0 in multicultural, multilingual databases intended to be used globally by peoples of different cultures and faith are discussed, using as example the multimedia OM Information Service. Vocabulary assistance for users is described.

    Abstract
Discusses the importance of knowledge organization in the context of the information overload caused by the vast quantities of data and information accessible on internal and external networks of an organization. Defines the characteristics of a knowledge-based product. Elaborates on the techniques and applications of text mining in developing knowledge products. Presents two approaches, as case studies, to the making of knowledge products: (1) steps and processes in the planning, designing and development of a composite multilingual multimedia CD product, with the potential international, inter-cultural end users in view, and (2) application of natural language processing software in text mining. Using a text mining software, it is possible to link concept terms from a processed text to a related thesaurus, glossary, schedules of a classification scheme, and facet structured subject representations. Concludes that the products of text mining and data mining could be made more useful if the features of a faceted scheme for subject classification are incorporated into text mining techniques and products.

    Abstract
Describes the OM Information Service (OMIS), which provides Web access to selected extracts from the writings and sayings of various spirutual leaders, saints, seers, mystics and scholars, with biographical sketches. Web access has been made more interesting through the provision of related images and music, and user and search interfaces have been designed for the novice user. OMIS is ported from a database originally available on CDS/ISIS. Discusses the content and structure of the CDS/ISIS database, requirements for the Web and CD-ROM versions, and system design and implementation for the media. For the CD-ROM, database access is provided using a Windows version of CDS/ISIS operating as a helper application within a Netscape browser

    Abstract
Summarizes some experiences of the application of the priciples and postulates of S.R. Ranganathan's General Theory of Knowledge Classification, incorporating the freely faceted approach and analytico synthetic methods, to the design and development of specialized databases, including indexing, user interfaces and retrieval. Enumerates some of the earlier instances of the facet method in machine based systems, beginning with Hollerith's punched card system for the data processing of the US Census. Elaborates on Ranganathan's holistic approach to information systems and services provided by his normative principles. Notes similarities between the design of databases and faceted classification systems. Examples from working systems are given to demonstrate the usefulness of selected canons and principles of classification and the analytico synthetic methodology to database design. The examples are mostly operational database systems developed using Unesco's Micro CDS-ISIS software
