    Abstract
    A system of library classification that flashed across the inquiring mind of young Melvil Louis Kossuth Dewey (known as Melvil Dewey) in 1873 is still the most popular classification scheme.. The modern library classification begins with Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Melvil Dewey devised DDC in 1876. DDC has is credit of 128 years of boudless success. The DDC is being taught as a practical subject throughout the world and it is being used in majority of libraries in about 150 countries. This is the result of continuous revision that 22nd Edition of DDC has been published in July 2003. No other classification scheme has published so many editions. Some welcome changes have been made in DDC 22. To reduce the Christian bias in 200 religion, the numbers 201 to 209 have been devoted to specific aspects of religion. In the previous editions these numbers were devoted to Christianity. to enhance the classifier's efficiency, Table 7 has been removed from DDC 22 and the provision of adding group of persons is made by direct use of notation already available in schedules and in notation -08 from Table 1 Standard Subdivision. The present book is an attempt to explain, with suitable examples, the salient provisions of DDC 22. The book is written in simple language so that the students may not face any difficulty in understanding what is being explained. The examples in the book are explained in a step-by-step procedure. It is hoped that this book will prove of great help and use to the library professionals in general and library and information science students in particular.

    Abstract
    Nahezu unbeachtet in der gesamten bibliothekswissenschaftlichen Literatur blieb bislang ein Arbeitsschritt der Inhaltserschließung, obgleich er ihren Ausgangspunkt bildet und damit von grundlegender Bedeutung ist: die Analyse des Inhalts von Dokumenten. Klare Aussagen über den Inhalt und die Beschaffenheit eines Dokuments auf der Basis fundierter Kriterien treffen zu können, ist das Anliegen von Langridges, nunmehr erstmalig in deutscher Übersetzung vorliegendem Werk. Gestützt auf ein Fundament philosophisch abgeleiteter Wissensformen, zeigt Langridge anhand einer Vielzahl konkreter Beispiele Wege - aber auch Irrwege- auf, sich dem Inhalt von Dokumenten zu nähern und zu Resultaten zu gelangen, die dank objektiver Kriterien überprüfbar werden. Er wendet sich damit sowohl an Studenten dieses Fachgebiets, indem er die grundlegenden Strukturen von Wissen aufzeigt, als auch an erfahrene Praktiker, die ihre Arbeit effektiver gestalten und ihre Entscheidungen auf eine Basis stellen möchten, die persönliche Einschätzungen objektiviert.

    Abschließend bleibt ein zwiespältiger Eindruck: Fraglos ist die »Wissensrepräsentation« eine Bereicherung für die leider allzu überschaubare monografische Literatur zur Sacherschließung in deutscher Sprache. Der Band enthält eine gewaltige Stoff- und Materialfülle und bezieht auch aktuelle Entwicklungen wie das Tagging mit ein. Für Bibliothekare ist es außerdem nützlich, das Thema einmal aus primär informationswissenschaftlicher Perspektive zu betrachten; gerade Fortgeschrittene werden bei der Lektüre manche interessante Anregung erhalten. Für den eigentlich intendierten Zweck - nämlich als umfassendes Lehrbuch - kann man Studierenden der Bibliothekswissenschaft das Werk allerdings nur unter Vorbehalt empfehlen. In der Lehre wird es daher wohl nur eine ergänzende Rolle neben anderer Literatur (etwa der bereits erwähnten, ausgesprochen gelungenen »Einführung in die inhaltliche Erschließung« von Jutta Bertram) einnehmen können.

Die behandelten Inhalte gehen über Grundlagen erheblich hinaus. Dies ist einerseits eine Schwäche des Buchs, zugleich aber auch seine Stärke. Als Novize mag man mit ihm zu kämpfen haben, als Experte wird man viele wertvolle Anregungen finden und noch die eine oder andere Wissenslücke schließen können. Entlastendes bieten die Autoren zudem all denjenigen, die von der Wichtigkeit der von einigen bereits als Anachronismus abgeschriebenen Hierarchierelation überzeugt sind, geben sie dieser doch den ihr gebührenden Raum."     Abstract
    Auf nahezu jedem Schreibtisch steht heute ein zumeist grauer Kasten, aus dem viele Kabel kommen. Vor 70 Jahren war dieser datenverarbeitende Kasten noch unscheinbarer, unelektronisch und aus Holz, buchstäblich eine Papiermaschine. Die ZettelWirtschaft widmet sich der Frage, wie diese >Maschine< namens Kartei ihren Siegeszug als ebenso universelles wie zentrales Werkzeug zur Datenverarbeitung in die Büros und Schreibstuben um 1930, bis zum Vorabend der >Universalen Diskreten Maschine< namens Computer, antreten konnte. Dabei wird die Entwicklung der Kartei anhand ihrer historischen Brüche verfolgt: angefangen bei den ersten explizit beschriebenen Verzettelungen des Wissens in der Frühen Neuzeit, über die beinahe zufällige Einführung und allmähliche Durchsetzung von Zettel-Katalogen in den Bibliotheken um 1800 steuert die Studie - nach einem Seitenblick auf die Produktionsbedingungen von Literatur mit Hilfe der Zettelkästen- hin zur zentralen These, der diskursiven Übertragung zwischen den Institutionen des Schreibens, zwischen Bibliothek und Büro. Versehen mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und zum Teil auf bislang unveröffentlichtem Archivmaterial basierend, wird hier die Historie der Zettelkästen und Karteisysteme als eine notwendige Vorgeschichte des Computers beschrieben, nicht ohne diesen Prozeß als eine abwechslungsreiche, bisweilen überraschende Geschichte des Scheiterns zu bilanzieren.
