    Abstract
The Dublin Core is a 15 element set intended to facilitate discovery of electronic resources. Its characteristics are: simplicity, semantic interoperability, international consensus, flexibility, metadata modularity on the Web and a metadata architecture for the Web. The WWW Consortium is developing the Resource Description Framework to support different metadata needs. It will support 3 resource description models: embedded metadata, third party metadata, and view filter. Development continues into: refinement of elements, user education and application guides, metadata registries, tools and standardization. Includes a list of related Web sites and details of the core elements

    Abstract
WWW sites, consisting mainly of links to other Internet resources, have begun to proliferate and these sites are valuable to library users and researchers because they bring together in a single Web site links to a comprehensive array of information resources. Because libraries may elect to include bibliographic records for these sites in their online catalogues, cataloguers should be aware of some of the main aspects of cataloguing this new type of resource. Concludes that cataloguers should be aware of the main types and different characteristics of these Web sites, how to describe them in bibliographic records and how to assign appropriate subject headings for them

    Abstract
This article presents an overview of some of the important recent developments in cataloging theory and practice and online catalog design. Changes in cataloging theory and practice include the incorporation of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records principles into catalogs, the new Resource Description and Access cataloging manual, and the new CONSER Standard Record. Web 2.0 functionalities and advances in search technology and results displays are influencing online catalog design. The paper ends with hypothetical scenarios in which a catalog, enhanced by the developments described, fulfills the tasks of finding serials articles and titles.

The PICS, an initiative of W3C, is a technology that supports the association of descriptive labels with Web resources. By providing a single common transport syntax for metadata, PICS will support the growth of metadata systems (including library cataloguing) that are interoperable and widely supported in Web information systems. Within the PICS framework, a great diversity of resource description models can be implemented, from simple rating schemes to complex data content standards

    Abstract
Cataloguers place a high importance on the ready availability of current and accurate local procedures. By using WWW technology, these procedures may be easily updated, made searchable via powerful search engines and capable of linking directly to related resources. Cataloguers' skills in organization and classification provide a good foundation for learning the basics of Web site creation. Presents some guidelines for dealing with the logical organization of procedures on the WWW, along with the use of appropriate language of consistent design

    Abstract
Highlights 2 problems with thinking of the Internet as a virtual library. Documents on the Internet, unlike books in a library, are difficult to catalogue, Internet holdings can change by the minute, and 'books' can disappear off the shelf without warning leaving scholars unable to verify cited sources. Sets out strategies to adopt, including: printing out sources or saving to hard disc; opt for signed articles; gauge the reliability of the material; contact the web master if problems arise. A major problem concerns bibliographic description and the actual, physical form of cited Internet references. Recommends 2 major guides for college writing: The Modern Language Association (MLA) Handbook for Writers of Research Papers; and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Includes actual samples of citations from electronic mail; web site; FTP; Gopher; Usenet news; or mailing list, taken from the MLA web site (http://www.falcon.eku.edu/honors/beyond-mla)

    Abstract
A 5th metadata workshop was held in Helsinki in Oct 1997, cosponsored by the National Library of Finland and OCLC, and 75 experts continued work begun in 1995 to try and reach consensus on conventions for describing resources on the Internet. Representatives of the W3C Metadata Project presented the 1st draft of a new specification for extended Web metadata: the Resource Description Framework (RDF), and demonstrated how this meets the infrastructure and encoding arrangements identified at the series of international Dublin Core workshops. W3C is an industry consortium run jointly by institutions in the USA, France and Japan, and currently has 210 members
