- Abstract
- Anlässlich eines Seminars über Web Usability erhielten Studierende des Fachbereichs Bibliothek und Information (HAW Hamburg) Gelegenheit, sich als Usability-Experten zu erproben. Als Ergebnis lagen im Sommer 2001 Usability-Berichte für 22 Bibliothekswebsites vor. Einige der Auftraggeber waren in der Lage, die Empfehlungen der Studierenden anlässlich eines Redesigns ihrer Website unmittelbar umzusetzen. Im Folgenden werden häufige und gravierende Befunde aus den Usability-Berichten zusammengefasst' und jeweils anschließend Empfehlungen angeboten.

- Abstract
- Bücherschatz is a prototype OPAC for children developed in 1995 by interdisciplinary cooperation between the Department of Library and Information Studies, FH Hamburg, and the computing department. Its target group is children aged 8-10. The software development method followed was Steps, while prototyping uses several methods of user participation, i.e. the metaphor game, scenarios and Pictive. Bücherschatz has an attractive graphical user interface, is mouse driven, uses a metaphor arousing children's curiosity, presents topics of children's books as a defined amount of search categories tested with children, and encourages reading through book descriptions appropriate for children

- Abstract
- Rekapituliert aus Ergebnissen der OOPAC-Nutzerforschung werden einige wesentliche Schwierigkeiten, die Endnutzer bei der Literaturrecherche in OPACs haben, und erklärt werden einige softwareseitige Maßnahmen zur fehlertoleranten OPAC-Gestaltung. Schwierigkeiten bei der OPAC-Nutzung sind: keine Treffer (kein recall), zu viele Treffer (Ballast), Orientierungslosigkeit, unverständliche Optionen, ungenügende Daten für Relevanzbeurteilung, Überschätzung des Datenbankinhaltes, unwirksame Hilfestellung. Einige in deutschen OPACs noch nicht implementierte Maßnahmen mit fehlertoleranter Auswirkung sind: automatische Wortformenreduktion, automatische Rechtschreibkorrektur, relevance ranking, Relevanzrückmeldung und Recherche mit Koindexaten

- Abstract
- In bibliothekarischen Studiengängen werden die Teaching Librarians von morgen ausgebildet. Am Department Information an der Hamburger Fachhochschule gehört Teaching Library als Wahlpflichtmodul im Bachelor-Studiengang »Bibliotheks- und Informationsmanagement« zum Angebot. Dabei wird unter anderem mit Web-Quests experimentiert, mit besonderen webbasierten Lernumgebungen. Die Professorin Ursula Schulz gibt einen Einblick in die Trainingswerkstatt für zukünftige Informationskompetenz-Vermittler aus der Hansestadt. - Die nachfolgenden Usability-Kriterien wurden aus Studien zur Nutzung von Suchmaschinen unterschiedlicher Art abgeleitet (vgl. Ouellenverzeichnis). Sie werden für die Zielgruppe des so genannten gelegentlichen Nutzers' empfohlen: z.B. - Abstract
- Thesen: (1) Die Definitionsmacht über die Funktion von Bibliothekskatalogen liegt bei den Bibliothekaren - nicht bei ihren Kunden. Die noch heute gültige, von Charles A. Cutter formulierte Funktion von Bibliothekskatalogen stammt aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Sie entspricht dem bibliothekarischen Bedürfnis nach Verwaltung des vorhandenen Buchbestandes. (2) Gleichzeitig stehen vor allem öffentliche Bibliotheken unter Legitimationsdruck. Ihr öffentlicher Auftrag ist u.a. die Leseförderung; ein wesentlicher Leistungsindikator ist die Ausleihstatistik. (3) Bibliothekskataloge könnten ein Werkzeug der Förderung beider Ziele sein. Ihr Design und die in ihnen enthaltene Information sollte deshalb - wie Warenkataloge - absatzorientiert und an den Informationsinteressen der Kunden orientiert sein. (4) Partizipation der Kunden bei der Gestaltung von Bibliothekskatalogen ist ein Weg, in einen intensiven Kommunikationsprozess zwischen Entwicklern, Bibliothekaren und Kunden einzutreten, dabei eine gemeinsame Sprache zu finden und mehr über die Interessen und Bedürfnisse der Kunden in Erfahrung zu bringen. (5) Kinder sind wichtige Kunden öffentlicher Bibliotheken. Bücher-Reise, für 8-11jährige Kinder, ist ein Kundenkatalog. Er entstand unter Partizipation von Kindern. Benutzerpartizipation: Ein flexibles Modell der partizipativen Softwareentwicklung ist STEPS (Softwaretechnik für evolutionäre partizipative Systementwicklung). Im Rahmen der Entwicklung von Bücher-Reise wurde das Konzept 'Benutzer' neu reflektiert und führte zu einer Trennung zwischen ,Benutzer-Anwälten' (hier: Bibliothekare) und 'Benutzern' (hier: Kinder) - und zwar dann, wenn Kunden über keine bewussten domainspezifischen Vorstellungen verfügen. Im Rahmen der Entwicklung von Bücher-Reise wurden verschiedene Methoden der Partizipation von Kindern bei der Entwicklung eines Bibliothekskatalogs getestet
