    Natürlich sind »Mind Hacks« keine Schwachstellen oder geheimen Kniffe, mit denen man eine vom »Entwickler« so nicht beabsichtigte Funktion des Gehirns freischalten könnte. Es gibt ja auch keinen Systemadministrator, bei dem man sich über die Fehlprogrammierung beschweren könnte - zumindest zu Lebzeiten nicht. Vielmehr offenbaren die Hacks die buchstäblich eigenwillige Funktionsweise des Gehirns: neuronal festgelegte Annahmen über die Umwelt, die dem »Ich« ihrer Natur nach so nah sind, dass sie nicht bewusst werden, wie eine Brille, die man nicht mehr wahrnimmt. In diesem Sinn sind wir meist Gefangene der Struktur unseres neuronalen Netzes. Stafford und Webb räumen mit der Vorstellung auf, man nutze nur zehn Prozent des Gehirns (Hack #6), und erklären viele alltägliche Phänomene, etwa, warum man sich nicht selbst kitzeln kann (Hack #65), warum man trotz schlechter Verbindung am Telefon immer noch die vertraute Stimme eines Freundes erkennen kann (Hack #33) oder warum der Klang von Worten neben dem Inhalt auch Bedeutung, etwa zur Form des bezeichneten Gegenstandes, vermittelt (Hack #50). Interessant auch Hack #67. Dort wird beschrieben, dass Gegenstände förmlich danach verlangen, auf eine bestimmte Art und Wei- se benutzt zu werden. Bereits durch die Form des Griffs sagt die Tür, dass sie gedrückt werden will; jedenfalls neigen die Leute dazu, das zu tun, auch wenn »Ziehen« draufsteht. Eine Notausgangstür sollte solche Missverständnisse besser nicht aufkommen lassen. Hack #99 schließlich weist auf die Bedeutung von verbaler Psychohygiene hin. Versuchspersonen, die Texte lasen, in die negative Begriffe eingeflochten waren, agierten anschließend in einer sozialen Versuchssituation deutlich aggressiver. Vielleicht gilt ja auch der Umkehrschluss, und Sie sollten dieses Buch entspannt im Sonnenschein auf einer Blumenwiese oder unter einem Regenbogen lesen, denn es birgt echte Schätze. Ein kurzweiliges Buch, das nicht in einem Zug gelesen werden muss und das zum Nachdenken über das Selbstverständnis des Lesers einlädt. Die vielen einfachen Experimente, die auf Alltagserfahrungen aufbauen, sorgen auch auf einer Party für Erstaunen, Belustigung und Gespräche jenseits des üblichen Smalltalks.
