    Abstract
Reports the work of the ad hoc task force, coordinated by the Scholarly Communications Project (SCP) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, to discuss the best means of cataloguing the theses palnned to be produced directly in electronic forms by postgraduate students. The main goals were to determine a process for handling electronic theses so that access would be at least as good as for hard copy and to find a way to derive cataloguing information from the electronic text and avoid rekeying as much as possible. An important part of the study was the application of existing MARC format tagged record structures to the new system. Concludes with brief notes on the concerns of UMI regarding Internet access of electronic theses

    Abstract
Reports results of a bibliometric study of 111 theses accepted by the Department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, between 1977 and 1992. The analysis was based on year, type and degree awarded, subject, type of library and geographical area. Concludes that the highest number of submissions was 1991, when 108 MLS theses (97,29%) and 3 PhD theses (2,71%) were accepted. Libraries and readers was the most concetrated subject while the academic library was the most discussed type of library

    Abstract
Theses and dissertations as electronic files transferred from the student author to the Graduate School to the Library may well be the first major source of electronic texts that many libraries encounter. To prepare for this potential influx of electronic texts, an ad hoc task force considered work flow and cataloging guidelines. The author suggests expanding current theses cataloging and taking advantage of online information prepared by authors so that the bibliographic records provide OPACS with much more valuable information than does traditional theses cataloging. This should not require a lot of extra work.

    Abstract
In July 2005, the Oregon State University Libraries began accepting electronic versions of student theses and dissertations into ScholarsArchive@OSU, the library's institutional repository. By January 2007, all Oregon State University graduate students were required to deposit their final research. This paper compares past processes and workflows for print theses and dissertations with the present workflow for electronic. We provide the rationale for changes and review the cost- and time-savings produced. We describe the changing roles of students, technicians and librarians in the metadata process as well as the value of students describing their own work.

    Abstract
The Portuguese legal deposit law requests the deposit of theses and dissertations in the National library. The actual law is concerned only with printed material, but the National library has been defining a strategy to address also the problem of the deposit of digital publications. These efforts are concentrated in three main components: an overall analysis of the structure of the problem; the development of the concept of publication genre; and the development of the concept of deposit by scenarios. In this context, the deposit of theses and dissertations emerged as an ideal case study for a scenario concerned with a specific genre, which deserves to be addressed not only as a purpose in itself, but also as an experiment from which we expect to learn valuable lessons for the overall problem

    Abstract
NDLTD, the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, supports and encourages the production and archiving of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). While many current NDLTD member institutions and consortia have individual collections accessible online, there has until recently been no single mechanism to aggregate all ETDs to provide NDLTD-wide services (e.g. searching). With the emergence of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI), that has changed. The OAI's Protocol for Metadata Harvesting is a robust interoperability solution that defines a standard method of exchanging metadata. While working with the OAI to develop and test the metadata harvesting standard, we have set up and actively maintain a central NDLTD metadata collection and multiple user portals. We discuss in this article our experiences in building this distributed digital library based upon the work of the OAI.

    Abstract
Presents a list of 53 periodicals in 22 subject fields which regularly provide bibliographies of theses, research in progress and patents in their particular subject field. The fields of business, economics, history and literature have most periodical listings of dissertations and theses. Also lists 63 periodicals in 25 sub-disciplines which provide rankings or ratings. Rankings and ratings information predominates in the fields of business, sports and games, finance and banking, and library and information science
