  Abstract: The first in a series of articles describing the experiences of professionals searching online databases for information on a set topic. Searchers from different countries were given a question to answer, a budget of 5o pounds sterling and a time in which to produce a report. To begin the series, a step by step account is presented of a search for information on the World Cup football event, to take place in the USA in 1994, the likelihood of it being a success and whether there are likely to be any investment opportunities.
