Abstract: Not much progress has been made in India regarding bibliographic databases of materials in Indian languages in the languages and scripts of the original items. Major projects include: machine readable version of the National Bibliography of Literature; Tamil collection of the roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai; and the collection of the Department of Indology of EFEO. Discusses the use of Indian language scripts in designing language databases, and some issues relating to multilingual databases and thesauri, and language compatibility. There is a need for developing multilingual thesauri in Indian languages
