  Abstract: TEL-ME-MOR is funded by European Commission, Directorate E - Content, as a result of the third call for proposals published in 2004, under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). As part of Workpackage 3 the national libraries of the 10 New Member States responded to a questionnaire to enable the TEL-ME-MOR project to establish an overview of subject access tools and practice in their institutions. Results are analysed and areas for further study are identified, in particular in the field of cross language access.

  Abstract: This report presents the results of desk-top based study of projects and initiatives in the area of linking and mapping subject tools. While its goal is to provide areas of further study for cross-language subject access in the European Library, and specifically the national libraries of the Ten New Member States, it is not restricted to cross-language mappings since some of the tools used to create links across thesauri or subject headings in the same language may also be appropriate for cross-language mapping. Tools reviewed have been selected to represent a variety of approaches (e.g. subject heading to subject heading, thesaurus to thesaurus, classification to subject heading) reflecting the variety of subject access tools in use in the European Library. The results show that there is no single solution that would be appropriate for all libraries but that parts of several initiatives may be applicable on a technical, organisational or content level.

  Abstract: Shared authority files and cooperation in the development of national lists, both author and subject, have enabled libraries to share resources and improve access to their collections. As we move from national resource sharing to a more international approach, we face problems accessing catalogues in other languages. By creating links between existing subject heading languages (initially in French, German, and English), MACS (Multilingual Access to Subjects) allows users to carry out searches in major national library collections in Europe using subject headings in their own languages. An operational service will be available in 2004.

  Abstract: This paper gives an overview of some of the many projects and initiatives in the field of long-term digital preservation. It is not intended to provide an exhaustive list of current activities but to show the different levels at which work is taking place, the variety of players and to underline the areas in which continued research is needed. It calls for the inclusion of more partners from the publishing and ICT sectors. It points out the difficulties involved in monitoring and following the large number of activities in the field and proposes that the PADI subject gateway could be used as the basis for a central list of initiatives and projects since it is already one of the most up-to-date and complete sites on the subject. Finally, it presents the CANT Committee on Digital Preservation whose goals include raising awareness of the problem and urging UNESCO member states to make money available for the preservation of the digital heritage

  Abstract: Multilingual access to library databases is a topic of concern not only to users in countries such as Switzerland in which several languages are spoken, but also to those who search for information in databases containing material in more than one language. The growth of networks means that libraries can access databases outside their own immediate circle but problems of differences in interfaces will continue until there is widespread compliance with Z39.50. Considers 2 approaches to multilingual access: the use of multilingual thesauri or authority records (which implies translation work before users search the database); and the translation of the search statement at the time of searching (which implies the existence of parsers and multilingual dictionaries)

  Abstract: The SIBIL system originated in software developed for the Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire in Lausanne, Switzerland in the early 1970s. SIBIL is now seen as a bibliographic tool providing a regional service for shared cataloguing and is installed in 5 centres in Switzerland, France and Luxembourg. The cooperative formed by SIBIL users (REBUS) supports staff involved in the development of SIBIL and in the interconnection of regional networks.
