  Abstract: Addresses the problem of data modelling in information retrieval introducing various aspects and issues that are necessarily taken into account when designing and developing an information retrieval system. Pays particular attention to the representation of different types of data managed by an information retrieval application: structured and unstructured data. A recently introduced information retrieval, data modelling approach supports the notion of a schema permitting representation of the information retrieval data on 2 different levels: intensional and extensional. presents the characteristics of this data modelling approach here together with examples of its use in a working prototype
