1Cousins, S. ; Sanders, A.: Incorporating a virtual union catalogue into the wider information environment through the application of middleware: Interoperability issues in cross-database access.
In: Journal of documentation. 62(2006) no.1, S.120-144.
Abstract: Purpose - To explore the use of middleware to provide access to a virtual catalogue via Z39.50, allowing its integration with other services. To consider issues arising from the cross-database search process and the problem of interoperability between systems. Design/methodology/approach - Middleware was used to establish a Z39.50 server for an existing virtual union catalogue, InforM25. The Copac physical union catalogue was used to carry out cross-database search tests, investigating the value of query transformation by the middleware and illustrating many of the issues associated with interoperability in cross-database searching. Findings - The test results demonstrate the viability and benefits of using middleware to allow the integration of virtual catalogues with other services. The results also illustrate the range of issues affecting the performance of the virtual catalogue, with supporting evidence from the use of the Copac physical union catalogue for cross-database searching via Z39.50. In particular the discussion highlights the issue of semantic interoperability, as well as emphasising the value of centralised virtual catalogue support. Research limitations/implications - The research was limited to work on a specific virtual union catalogue, that is InforM25, but the results highlight issues with general relevance in the development of any virtual catalogue. The need for more work on response times in the virtual union catalogue is apparent, along with the related issue of result set post processing. Originality/value - This paper provides a practical demonstration of the issues important to those involved in making their local catalogue accessible to services, and individuals, outside their own institution, as well as those working on virtual union catalogue development.

2Cousins, S.A.: Duplicate detection and record consolidation in large bibliographic databases : the COPAC database experience.
In: Journal of information science. 24(1998) no.4, S.231-240.
Abstract: COPAC (CURL OPAC) is a union catalogue, based on records supplied by members of the Consortium of University Libraries (CURL), giving access to the online catalogue records of some of the largest academic research libraries in the UK and Ireland. Like all union catalogues, COPAC is supplied with multiple copies of records representing the same document in the contributing library catalogues. To reduce the level of duplication visible to the COPAC user, duplicate detection and record consolidation procedures have been developed. These result in the production of a single record for each document, representing the holdings of several libraries. Discusses the ways in which both the duplicate detection and record consolidation procedures are carried out, and problem areas encountered. Describes the general structure of these procedures, providing a model of the duplicate record handling mechanisms used in COPAC

3Cousins, S.: COPAC: new research library union catalogue.
In: Electronic library. 15(1997) no.3, S.185-188.
Abstract: COPAC (CURL Online Public Access Catalogue) is the new OPAC which provides free access to the information contained in the main online catalogues of a number of important academic research libraries. Records are currently contributed by the university libraries of Cambridge, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford and Trinity College, Dublin. All libraries are members of the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) and COPAC is seen as partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Records from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, and London University (Senate House) are being loaded and the online catalogues of the remaining 12 CURL member libraries will be added in due course

4Cousins, S.A.: COPAC: the new national OPAC service based on the CURL database.
In: Program. 31(1997) no.1, S.1-21.
Abstract: Presents a brief description of the operation of COPAC, the new OPAC providing a unified interface to the consolidated database and online catalogues of the UK's Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL). COPAC is seen as the partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Provides a brief overview of the background to the CURL OPAC and the COPAC project, describing the main content of the COPAC database. Considers the effect of having multiple contributors to the database and the inevitable need for deduplication and record consolidation to cope with the inevitable record duplication. COPAC is accessible via a text interface and a WWW interface. Discusses each interface using example screens to illustrate the search process

5Cousins, S.A. ; Hartley, R.J.: Towards multilingual online public access catalogues.
In: Libri. 44(1994) no.1, S.47-62.
Abstract: With increasing moves towards an integrated Europe the need for multilingual access to information becomes more pressing. One aspect of this need which has largely been neglected is the provision of multilingual access to OPACs and this paper is concerned with exploring this problem area. The need for multilingual OPAC search capabilities and the difficulties associated with this are discussed. The problems of subject access in particular are highlighted. Research into subject searching in monolingual OPACs is reviewed and its relevance to multilingual OPACs is outlined. Given the limitations of current machine translation of natural language it is likely that the utilisation of controlled subject search facilities. Finally some possible directions for further research are considered

6Cousins, S.A.: Enhancing subject access to OPACs : controlled vocabulary vs. natural language.
In: Journal of documentation. 48(1992) no.3, S.291-309.
Abstract: Experimental evidence suggests that enhancing the subject content of OPAC records can improve retrieval performance. This is based on the use of natural language index terms derived from the table of contents and back-of-the-book index of documents. The research reported here investigates the alternative approach of translating these natural language terms into controlled vocabulary. Subject queries were collected by interview at the catalogue, and indexing of the queries demonstrated the impressive ability of PRECIS, and to a lesser extent LCSH, to represent users' information needs. DDC performed poorly in this respect. The assumption was made that an index language adequately specific to represent users' queries should be adequate to represent document contents. Searches were carried out on three test databases, and both natural language and PRECIS enhancement of MARC records increased the number of relevant documents found, with PRECIS showing the better performance. However, with weak stemming the advantage of PRECIS was lost. Consideration must also be given to the potential advantages of controlled vocabulary, over and above basic retrieval performance measures

7Frisse, M.F. ; Cousins, S.B.: Models for hypertext.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science. 43(1992) no.2, S.183-191.
Abstract: Describes 3 models of hypertext. Each model represents a different level in the design and decision process necessary for effective hypertext development, and each model plays an important role in the development and use of information management software exhibiting hypertext features. They are: the Dexter hypertext model; gIBIS (generalised Issue-Based Information System); and Trellis

8Cousins, S.A.: In their own words : an examination of catalogue users' subject queries.
In: Journal of information science. 18(1992), S.329-341.
Abstract: As part of a recent research project a large set of catalogue users' subject queries was collected by interview. The libraries and the data collection procedures are briefly described. The query set obtained has been divided into several general categories which illustrate the range of of types of subject search being performed. Each category of query is discussed, with a consideration of the problem which face the user in carrying out each type of search. Possible solutions to some of these problems are considered. The most important issue is the variation in specifity of the queries, whilst other issues relate to the users' expression of need, access to specific types of materials, interdisciplinary subjects, and inappropriate queries. These issues are summarised and the implications for OPAC design are discussed
