1Lee, J. ; Jatowt, A. ; Kim, K.-S..: Discovering underlying sensations of human emotions based on social media.
In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 72(2021) no.4, S.417-432.
Abstract: Analyzing social media has become a common way for capturing and understanding people's opinions, sentiments, interests, and reactions to ongoing events. Social media has thus become a rich and real-time source for various kinds of public opinion and sentiment studies. According to psychology and neuroscience, human emotions are known to be strongly dependent on sensory perceptions. Although sensation is the most fundamental antecedent of human emotions, prior works have not looked into their relation to emotions based on social media texts. In this paper, we report the results of our study on sensation effects that underlie human emotions as revealed in social media. We focus on the key five types of sensations: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. We first establish a correlation between emotion and sensation in terms of linguistic expressions. Then, in the second part of the paper, we define novel features useful for extracting sensation information from social media. Finally, we design a method to classify texts into ones associated with different types of sensations. The sensation dataset resulting from this research is opened to the public to foster further studies.

2Kim, K.-S.: Effects of emotion control and task on Web searching behavior.
In: Information processing and management. 44(2008) no.1, S.373-385.
Abstract: The study investigated how users' emotion control and search tasks interact and influence the Web search behavior and performance among experienced Web users. Sixty-seven undergraduate students with substantial Web experience participated in the study. Effects of emotion control and tasks were found significant on the search behavior but not on the search performance. The interaction effect between emotion control and tasks on the search behavior was also significant: effects of users' emotion control on the search behavior varied depending on search tasks. Profile analyses of search behaviors identified and contrasted the most commonly occurring profiles of search activities in different search tasks. Suggestions were made to improve information literacy programs, and implications for future research were discussed.

3Kim, K.-S. ; Kim, S.-C.J. ; Park, S.-J. ; Zhu, X. ; Polparsi, J.: Facet analyses of categories used in Web directories : a comparative study.
In: http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla72/papers/136-Kim-en.pdf.
Abstract: Faceted classification is believed to be suitable for organizing digital information resources. Based on a faceted classification model suggested for Web resources (Zins, 2002), the current study analyzed popular Web directories from different Asian countries/areas and examined cultural differences reflected in their classification systems. Three popular Web directories from four countries/regions (China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Thailand) were selected and their classifications were analyzed and compared: a local Yahoo and two home-grown Web directories from each country/region. Based on the findings, the study suggests a model that might be more suitable to Asian culture.

4Kim, K.-S.: Recent work in cataloging and classification, 2000-2002.
In: Library resources and technical services. 47(2003) no.3, S.96-108.
Abstract: This article provides a review of cataloging and classification publications that appeared in the last two years. The review considers the papers in two categories. Cataloging Theories and Practices covers descriptive cataloging, authority control, classification, subject cataloging, cataloging nonbook materials, electronic resources and metadata, and international cooperation. The second section covers other issues related to cataloging, including management, and education and training. Throughout the review, the author identifies trends and important developments in the area of cataloging and classification.

5Kim, K.-S. ; Allen, B.: Cognitive and task influences on Web searching behavior.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and technology. 53(2002) no.2, S.109-119.
Abstract: Users' individual differences and tasks are important factors that influence the use of information systems. Two independent investigations were conducted to study the impact of differences in users' cognition and search tasks on Web search activities and outcomes. Strong task effects were found on search activities and outcomes, whereas interactions between cognitive and task variables were found on search activities only. These results imply that the flexibility of the Web and Web search engines allows different users to complete different search tasks successfully. However, the search techniques used and the efficiency of the searches appear to depend on how well the individual searcher fits with the specific task

6Palmquist, R.A. ; Kim, K.-S.: Cognitive style and on-line database search experience as predictors of Web search performance.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science. 51(2000) no.6, S.558-566.
Abstract: This study sought to investigate the effects of cognitive style (field dependent and field independent) and on-line database search experience (novice and experienced) on the WWW search performance of undergraduate college students (n=48). It also attempted to find user factors that could be used to predict search efficiency. search performance, the dependent variable was defined in 2 ways: (1) time required for retrieving a relevant information item, and (2) the number of nodes traversed for retrieving a relevant information item. the search tasks required were carried out on a University Web site, and included a factual task and a topical search task of interest to the participant. Results indicated that while cognitive style (FD/FI) significantly influenced the search performance of novice searchers, the influence was greatly reduced in those searchers who had on-line database search experience. Based on the findings, suggestions for possible changes to the design of the current Web interface and to user training programs are provided

7Palmquist, R.A. ; Kim, K.-S.: Modeling the users of information systems : some theories and methods.
In: Reference librarian. 1998, no.60, S.3-25.
Abstract: Examines some of the theories that have evolved to explain the mental processes required for the use of information systems. Categorizes research in this area into system oriented and user oriented studies and reviews this research. Describes a sample of methodologies used for examining users and their information seeking behaviour. Concludes with a discussion of the implications of these theories and methods for librarians and information specialists
