1Lima, G.A. de ; Castro, I.R.: Uso da classificacao decimal universal para a recuperacao da informacao em ambientes digitas : uma revisao sistematica da literatura.
In: Informação & Informação. 26(2021) no.1, p.550-573.
Abstract: Knowledge Organization Systems, even traditional ones, such as the Universal Decimal Classification, have been studied to improve the retrieval of information online, although the potential of using knowledge structures in the user interface has not yet been widespread. Objective: This study presents a mapping of scientific production on information retrieval methodologies, which make use of the Universal Decimal Classification. Methodology: Systematic Literature Review, conducted in two stages, with a selection of 44 publications, resulting in the time interval from 1964 to 2017, whose categories analyzed were: most productive authors, languages of publications, types of document, year of publication, most cited work, major impact journal, and thematic categories covered in the publications. Results: A total of nine more productive authors and co-authors were found; predominance of the English language (42 publications); works published in the format of journal articles (33); and highlight to the year 2007 (eight publications). In addition, it was identified that the most cited work was by Mcilwaine (1997), with 61 citations, and the journal Extensions & Corrections to the UDC was the one with the largest number of publications, in addition to the incidence of the theme Universal Automation linked to a thesaurus for information retrieval, present in 19 works. Conclusions: Shortage of studies that explore the potential of the Decimal Classification, especially in Brazilian literature, which highlights the need for further study on the topic, involving research at the national and international levels.

4Netto, C.M. ; Borém de Oliveira Lima, G.A. ; Pierozzi Júnior, I.: ¬An application of facet analysis theory and concept maps for faceted search in a domain ontology : preliminary studies.
In: Knowledge organization. 43(2016) no.4, S.254-264.
Abstract: This paper presents partial results of a research project still in development that aims to study the theory of faceted analysis and concept maps for faceted search in a domain ontology. The research shows a solution that enables abstraction levels for users in order to retrieve information in the domain area represented in ontology. The problem is considered a challenge, because of the formal computational structure of semantic description of ontology that does not present itself as feasible from the point of view of its users' cognition. This paper exposes the results using a web tool prototype for faceted navigation in a sample of ontology that was created for the organization of the domain knowledge, regarding the impact of agriculture and climatic changes on water resources. The results show the feasibility of navigation and information retrieval in the ontology using the web faceted prototype. It is believed that through this study a computational solution that can be developed is able to facilitate the creation of the conceptual model for faceted and concept map navigation around the area represented by ontology so human learning on the domain can be assessed, as well as the recovery and sharing of information on user groups.

Abstract: The categorial approach was formulated by Ranganathan in the 1930s in his Colon Classification and its conceptual and theoretical basis was laid down in his Prolegomena. This view influenced significantly the search for a new approach to knowledge organization that would overcome the rigidity and limitations of enumerative models. The categorical approach or the facet-analytical approach has since become the single most predominant approach in knowledge organization leading to the development of a number of special classification schemes for micro-subjects, new general classification schemes such as BSO (and revision of existing schemes, e.g. BC2), indexing systems such as PRECIS and POPSI, revision and / or development of controlled vocabularies to conform to the faceted approach, emergence of new tools such as the Thesaurofacet and Classaurus, and in recent years, facet analysis has even been used in website design. This paper explores some schemas and raises a few questions as to the relevance of these in the digital environment.

8Baião Salgado Silva, G. ; Lima, G.Â. Borém de Oliveira: Using topic maps in establishing compatibility of semantically structured hypertext contents.
In: Knowledge organization. 39(2012) no.6, S.432-445.
Abstract: Considering the characteristics of hypertext systems and problems such as cognitive overload and the disorientation of users, this project studies subject hypertext documents that have undergone conceptual structuring using facets for content representation and improvement of information retrieval during navigation. The main objective was to assess the possibility of the application of topic map technology for automating the compatibilization process of these structures. For this purpose, two dissertations from the UFMG Information Science Post-Graduation Program were adopted as samples. Both dissertations had been duly analyzed and structured on the MHTX (Hypertextual Map) prototype database. The faceted structures of both dissertations, which had been represented in conceptual maps, were then converted into topic maps. It was then possible to use the merge property of the topic maps to promote the semantic interrelationship between the maps and, consequently, between the hypertextual information resources proper. The merge results were then analyzed in the light of theories dealing with the compatibilization of languages developed within the realm of information technology and librarianship from the 1960s on. The main goals accomplished were: (a) the detailed conceptualization of the merge process of the topic maps, considering the possible compatibilization levels and the applicability of this technology in the integration of faceted structures; and (b) the production of a detailed sequence of steps that may be used in the implementation of topic maps based on faceted structures.

Abstract: We present the results of research that sought to prioritize the user.s information needs in relation to digital libraries of theses and dissertations. To this end, a faceted browsable taxonomy was created to offer the user a search option that is easy to use and interpret, with organized information. In the development of the study, we applied: the socio-cognitive approach of domain analysis theory, Ranganathan.s facet analysis, and content analysis, with the application of the thematic categorical analysis technique. We concluded that the browsing mechanism facilitated the visualization, exploration and retrieval of detailed information on research results by the academic community.

In: Culture and identity in knowledge organization: Proceedings of the Tenth International ISKO Conference 5-8 August 2008, Montreal, Canada. Ed. by Clément Arsenault and Joseph T. Tennis. Würzburg : Ergon Verlag, 2008. S.177-183.
(Advances in knowledge organization; vol.11)
Inhalt: This article reports an applied research on the construction and implementation of a semantically structured conceptual prototype to help in the organization and representation of human knowledge in hypertextual systems, based on four references: the Facet Analysis Theory (FAT), the Conceptual Map Theory, semantic structure of hypertext links and the technical guidelines of the Associacao Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). This prototype, called Modelo Hipertextual para Organizacao de Documentos (MHTX) - Model For Hypertext Organization of Documents HTXM - is formed by a semantic structure called Conceptual Map (CM) and Expanded Summary (ES), the latter based on the summary of a selected doctoral thesis to which access points were designed. In the future, this prototype maybe used to implement a digital libraty called BTDECI - UFMG (Biblioteca de Teses e Dissertacöes do Programa de Pós-Graduacao da Escola de Ciência da Informacao da UFMG - Library of Theses and Dissertations of the Graduate Program of School of Information Science of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais).

In: Knowledge organization. 31(2004) no.2, S.98-105.
Abstract: Information Science, which attained the status of a discipline in the 1980s, has been enriched by Inputs from a number of disciplines ranging from computer technology to psychology. A predominant characteristic of research in Information Retrieval in recent years has been the adoption of a 'user-centered' approach to the design of information systems. This shift in the emphasis began primarily after Belkin enunciated his ASK (Anomalous State of Knowledge) hypothesis. Research in the Cognitive Sciences has the potential to contribute substantially to enhancing all Information Retrieval processes. This paper emphasizes the importance of adopting a broad-based approach to cognitive research in IR and suggests that there is a need for exploring the relevance of analytico-synthetic approach and related research in the design of IR systems.
