1Zhou, Q. ; Lee, C.S. ; Sin, S.-C.J. ; Lin, S. ; Hu, H. ; Ismail, M.F.F. Bin: Understanding the use of YouTube as a learning resource : a social cognitive perspective.
In: Aslib journal of information management. 72(2020) no.3, S.339-359.
Abstract: Drawing from social cognitive theory, the purpose of this study is to examine how personal, environmental and behavioral factors can interplay to influence people's use of YouTube as a learning resource. Design/methodology/approach This study proposed a conceptual model, which was then tested with data collected from a survey with 150 participants who had the experience of using YouTube for learning. The bootstrap method was employed to test the direct and mediation hypotheses in the model. Findings The results revealed that personal factors, i.e. learning outcome expectations and attitude, had direct effects on using YouTube as a learning resource (person ? behavior). The environmental factor, i.e. the sociability of YouTube, influenced the attitude (environment ? person), while the behavioral factor, i.e. prior experience of learning on YouTube, affected learning outcome expectations (behavior ? person). Moreover, the two personal factors fully mediated the influences of sociability and prior experience on YouTube usage for learning. Practical implications The factors and their relationships identified in this study provide important implications for individual learners, platform designers, educators and other stakeholders who encourage the use of YouTube as a learning resource. Originality/value This study draws on a comprehensive theoretical perspective (i.e. social cognitive theory) to investigate the interplay of critical components (i.e. individual, environment and behavior) in YouTube's learning ecosystem. Personal factors not only directly influenced the extent to which people use YouTube as a learning resource but also mediated the effects of environmental and behavioral factors on the usage behavior.

2Li, H. ; Wu, H. ; Li, D. ; Lin, S. ; Su, Z. ; Luo, X.: PSI: A probabilistic semantic interpretable framework for fine-grained image ranking.
In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 69(2018) no.12, S.1488-1501.
Abstract: Image Ranking is one of the key problems in information science research area. However, most current methods focus on increasing the performance, leaving the semantic gap problem, which refers to the learned ranking models are hard to be understood, remaining intact. Therefore, in this article, we aim at learning an interpretable ranking model to tackle the semantic gap in fine-grained image ranking. We propose to combine attribute-based representation and online passive-aggressive (PA) learning based ranking models to achieve this goal. Besides, considering the highly localized instances in fine-grained image ranking, we introduce a supervised constrained clustering method to gather class-balanced training instances for local PA-based models, and incorporate the learned local models into a unified probabilistic framework. Extensive experiments on the benchmark demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and speed.

3Li, Y. ; Xu, S. ; Luo, X. ; Lin, S.: ¬A new algorithm for product image search based on salient edge characterization.
In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 65(2014) no.12, S.2534-2551.
Abstract: Visually assisted product image search has gained increasing popularity because of its capability to greatly improve end users' e-commerce shopping experiences. Different from general-purpose content-based image retrieval (CBIR) applications, the specific goal of product image search is to retrieve and rank relevant products from a large-scale product database to visually assist a user's online shopping experience. In this paper, we explore the problem of product image search through salient edge characterization and analysis, for which we propose a novel image search method coupled with an interactive user region-of-interest indication function. Given a product image, the proposed approach first extracts an edge map, based on which contour curves are further extracted. We then segment the extracted contours into fragments according to the detected contour corners. After that, a set of salient edge elements is extracted from each product image. Based on salient edge elements matching and similarity evaluation, the method derives a new pairwise image similarity estimate. Using the new image similarity, we can then retrieve product images. To evaluate the performance of our algorithm, we conducted 120 sessions of querying experiments on a data set comprised of around 13k product images collected from multiple, real-world e-commerce websites. We compared the performance of the proposed method with that of a bag-of-words method (Philbin, Chum, Isard, Sivic, & Zisserman, 2008) and a Pyramid Histogram of Orientated Gradients (PHOG) method (Bosch, Zisserman, & Munoz, 2007). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the performance of example-based product image retrieval.

4Lin, S. ; Xie, I.: Behavioral changes in transmuting multisession successive searches over the web.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 64(2013) no.6, S.1259-1283.
Abstract: Multisession successive information searches are common but little research has focused on quantitative analysis. This article enhances our understanding of successive information searches by employing an experimental method to observe whether and how the behavioral characteristics of searchers statistically significantly changed over sessions. It focuses on a specific type of successive search called transmuting successive searches, in which searchers learn about and gradually refine their information problems during the course of the information search. The results show that searchers' behavioral characteristics indeed exhibit different patterns in different sessions. The identification of the behavioral characteristics can help information retrieval systems to detect stages or sessions of the information search process. The findings also help validate a theoretical framework to explain successive searches and suggest system requirements for supporting the associated search behavior. The study is one of the first to not only test for statistical significance among research propositions concerning successive searches but to also apply the research principles of implicit relevance feedback to successive searches.

5Huang, S.-L. ; Lin, S.-C. ; Chan, Y.-C.: Investigating effectiveness and user acceptance of semantic social tagging for knowledge sharing.
In: Information processing and management. 48(2012) no.4, S.599-617.
Abstract: Social tagging systems enable users to assign arbitrary tags to various digital resources. However, they face vague-meaning problems when users retrieve or present resources with the keyword-based tags. In order to solve these problems, this study takes advantage of Semantic Web technology and the topological characteristics of knowledge maps to develop a system that comprises a semantic tagging mechanism and triple-pattern and visual searching mechanisms. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and user acceptance of these mechanisms in a knowledge sharing context. The results show that the semantic social tagging system is more effective than a keyword-based system. The visualized knowledge map helps users capture an overview of the knowledge domain, reduce cognitive effort for the search, and obtain more enjoyment. Traditional keyword tagging with a keyword search still has the advantage of ease of use and the users had higher intention to use it. This study also proposes directions for future development of semantic social tagging systems.

In: Information - Wissenschaft und Praxis. 58(2007) H.8, S.399-401.

8Liang, S.-F. ; Devlin, S. ; Tait, J.: Investigating sentence weighting components for automatic summarisation.
In: Information processing and management. 43(2007) no.1, S.146-153.
Abstract: The work described here initially formed part of a triangulation exercise to establish the effectiveness of the Query Term Order algorithm. It subsequently proved to be a reliable indicator for summarising English web documents. We utilised the human summaries from the Document Understanding Conference data, and generated queries automatically for testing the QTO algorithm. Six sentence weighting schemes that made use of Query Term Frequency and QTO were constructed to produce system summaries, and this paper explains the process of combining and balancing the weighting components. The summaries produced were evaluated by the ROUGE-1 metric, and the results showed that using QTO in a weighting combination resulted in the best performance. We also found that using a combination of more weighting components always produced improved performance compared to any single weighting component.

10Lin, S.-j.: Internetworking of factors affecting successive searches over multiple episodes.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 56(2005) no.4, S.416-436.
Abstract: Successive information searches are fairly common. To enhance the understanding of the behavior, this study attempted to improve both the descriptive and explanatory power of the Multiple Information Seeking Episodes (MISE) model, a conceptual model characterizing factors affecting successive searches. It empirically observed how the key factors in the information seeking process in the MISE model evolve over multiple search sessions and explained how those factors are affected by other factors associated with searchers, search activity, search context, systems, information attainment, and information-use activities. The validated and enriched MISE model can be extended to serve the basis for future studies in other complex searches process such as multi-tasking and collaborative searches, and can also help identify problems that users face and thus derive requirements for system support.

11Lin, S.-j. ; Belkin, N.: Validation of a model of information seeking over multiple search sessions.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 56(2005) no.4, S.393-415.
Abstract: Most information systems share a common assumption: information seeking is discrete. Such an assumption neither reflects real-life information seeking processes nor conforms to the perspective of phenomenology, "life is a journey constituted by continuous acquisition of knowledge." Thus, this study develops and validates a theoretical model that explains successive search experience for essentially the same information problem. The proposed model is called Multiple Information Seeking Episodes (MISE), which consists of four dimensions: problematic situation, information problem, information seeking process, episodes. Eight modes of multiple information seeking episodes are identified and specified with properties of the four dimensions of MISE. The results partially validate MISE by finding that the original MISE model is highly accurate, but less sufficient in characterizing successive searches; all factors in the MISE model are empirically confirmed, but new factors are identified as weIl. The revised MISE model is shifted from the user-centered to the interaction-centered perspective, taking into account factors of searcher, system, search activity, search context, information attainment, and information use activities.

13Maislin, S.: Ripping out the pages.Beyond book indexing: how to get started in Web indexing, embedded indexing and other computer-based media. Ed. by D. Brenner u. M. Rowland.
Phoenix, AZ : American Society of Indexers / Information Today, 2000. S.43-57.
Abstract: When the Web was invented, it was touted as a novel nonlinear medium for the written word. No longer would we be constrained by linear presentations! Hyperlinks would allow us to jump haphazardly from page to page, chapter to chapter, idea to idea! Texts would no longer need to run from beginning to end! This is misleading. A printed book is also multidimensional and potentially nonlinear. We can open it to any page, from any other page, for any reason. We can open several books at once. In fact, what makes a book special is its combination of linear structure (the order of the words) and nonlinear physicality (the bound papers). This linear/nonlinear duality is enhanced further by the index, which maps linearly sequenced pages in a nonlinear, informationally ordered structure (architecture). In truth, the online environment is crippled by an absence of linear structure. Imagine selecting a hard cover book, tearing off the covers, ripping pages into small pieces, and throwing them in a box. That box is like a computer file system, and the paper scraps are Web documents. Only one scrap can be retrieved from the box at a time, and it must be replaced before another can be accessed. Page numbers are meaningless. Global context is destroyed. And without page numbers or context, what happens to the index?

Abstract: Because of its characteristics, educational uses of WWW can evolve along 2 major axes: use of the technology on a closed corpus of educational material, for the hypermedia and distance delivery capabilities of the Web on the one hand, and use of this technolgy on an organizes structure of links for an open corpus of material that was not necessarily meant for educational use but which can be 'redirected' and exploited in guided educational explorations. These 2 axes are not antagonistic, but can be alternatively or complementarily exploited. Analyzes those features of WWW that are most interesting for educational purposes and show possible sophisticated pedagogical uses of the Web

In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 14(1992) nos.3/4, S.51-73.
Abstract: Many factors must be considered in designing a serials retrospective conversion project. Based on their experience with a project deriving records from RLIN and entering records directly into a local NOTIS system, the authors discuss the project design considerations, authority control, recataloging issues, and clean-up problems and solutions. They compare the merits of methods employed in different phases of the project as well as on-going conversion. In converting all currently received serials not cataloged on RLIN, nearly 11,000 fully cataloged and 7,000 uncataloged titles were added to the University of Iowa database.

20Kalin, S.W.: ¬The searching behavior of remote users : a study of one online public access catalog (OPAC).
In: ASIS '91: Systems understanding people. Proc. of the 54th Ann. Meeting of the ASIS, vol.28, Washington, D.C., 27.-31.10.1991. Ed.: J.-M. Griffiths. Medford : Learned Information Inc., 1991. S.178-185.
Abstract: This study aimed to determine if the searching behaviour of remote users of LIAS, Penn State's online catalogue differed from those using the OPAC within the library. More than 1.000 searches done by remote users (those accessing the system via either dial-access or the university's computer network) were compared to more than 1.000 searches done by in-house users. Each search was duplicated step by step and analysed according to a pre-determined set of criteria. Although few dramatic differences were found between the 2 groups, there were enough subtle differences to generate interest. In general, remote users are the more sophisticated searchers, bearing out the assumption that remote users seem to have a better conceptual knowledge of how an information system should operate. On the other hand, they struggle more with the procedural details of how to use the OPAC. Dial-access users seem to constitute a unique group of users: their searches are often quite different than those done by either network or in-house users
