(JASIST special issue on digital humanities (DH): A. Landscapes of DH)
Abstract: The interdisciplinary field known as digital humanities (DH) is represented in various forms in the teaching and research practiced in iSchools. Building on the work of an iSchools organization committee charged with exploring digital humanities curricula, we present findings from a series of related studies exploring aspects of DH teaching, education, and research in iSchools, often in collaboration with other units and disciplines. Through a survey of iSchool programs and an online DH course registry, we investigate the various education models for DH training found in iSchools, followed by a detailed look at DH courses and curricula, explored through analysis of course syllabi and course descriptions. We take a brief look at collaborative disciplines with which iSchools cooperate on DH research projects or in offering DH education. Next, we explore DH careers through an analysis of relevant job advertisements. Finally, we offer some observations about the management and administrative challenges and opportunities related to offering a new iSchool DH program. Our results provide a snapshot of the current state of digital humanities in iSchools which may usefully inform the design and evolution of new DH programs, degrees, and related initiatives.

2Lee, J. ; Oh, S. ; Dong, H. ; Wang, F. ; Burnett, G.: Motivations for self-archiving on an academic social networking site : a study on researchgate.
In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 70(2019) no.6, S.563-574.
Abstract: This study investigates motivations for self-archiving research items on academic social networking sites (ASNSs). A model of these motivations was developed based on two existing motivation models: motivation for self-archiving in academia and motivations for information sharing in social media. The proposed model is composed of 18 factors drawn from personal, social, professional, and external contexts, including enjoyment, personal/professional gain, reputation, learning, self-efficacy, altruism, reciprocity, trust, community interest, social engagement, publicity, accessibility, self-archiving culture, influence of external actors, credibility, system stability, copyright concerns, additional time, and effort. Two hundred and twenty-six ResearchGate users participated in the survey. Accessibility was the most highly rated factor, followed by altruism, reciprocity, trust, self-efficacy, reputation, publicity, and others. Personal, social, and professional factors were also highly rated, while external factors were rated relatively low. Motivations were correlated with one another, demonstrating that RG motivations for self-archiving could increase or decrease based on several factors in combination with motivations from the personal, social, professional, and external contexts. We believe the findings from this study can increase our understanding of users' motivations in sharing their research and provide useful implications for the development and improvement of ASNS services, thereby attracting more active users.

3Oh, S. ; Syn, S.Y.: Motivations for sharing information and social support in social media : a comparative analysis of Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, YouTube, and Flickr.
In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 66(2015) no.10, S.2045-2060.
Abstract: The success or failure of social media is highly dependent on the active participation of its users. In order to examine the influential factors that inspire dynamic and eager participation, this study investigates what motivates social media users to share their personal experiences, information, and social support with anonymous others. A variety of information-sharing activities in social media, including creating postings, photos, and videos in 5 different types of social media: Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, YouTube, and Flickr, were observed. Ten factors: enjoyment, self-efficacy, learning, personal gain, altruism, empathy, social engagement, community interest, reciprocity, and reputation, were tested to identify the motivations of social media users based on reviews of major motivation theories and models. Findings from this study indicate that all of the 10 motivations are influential in encouraging users' information sharing to some degree and strongly correlate with one another. At the same time, motivations differ across the 5 types of social media, given that they deliver different information content and serve different purposes. Understanding such differences in motivations could benefit social media developers and those organizations or institutes that would like to use social media to facilitate communication among their community members; appropriate types of social media could be chosen that would fit their own purposes and they could develop strategies that would encourage their members to contribute to their communities through social media.

5Oh, S.: ¬The characteristics and motivations of health answerers for sharing information, knowledge, and experiences in online environments.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 63(2012) no.3, S.543-557.
Abstract: In Web 2.0 environments, people commonly share their knowledge and personal experiences with others, but little is known about their background characteristics and motivations. Thus, the current study examines some of the characteristics and motivations common among answerers, who produce health-related answers to questions asked by anonymous others in a social Q&A site, Yahoo! Answers. An online survey questionnaire was distributed to top and recent answerers to investigate their demographics, areas of health expertise, and other characteristics related to answering behaviors online. Also, 10 motivation factors are proposed and tested in the survey: enjoyment, efficacy, learning, personal gain, altruism, community interest, social engagement, empathy, reputation, and reciprocity. Findings show that altruism is the most influential motivation, while personal gain is the least. Enjoyment and efficacy are more influential than other social motivations, such as reputation or reciprocity, although there are some variations across different groups of answerers. Motivational factors among top answerers or health experts are further analyzed. The findings of this study have practical implications for promoting health answerers to share knowledge and experiences in social contexts. Furthermore, the study design of the current study can be used to examine motivations of answerers in other topic areas as well as other social contexts.

6Nuttall, F.X. ; Oh, S.G.: Party identifiers.
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 49(2011) no.6, S.528-537.
Abstract: As Digital Media develops into a mature market, the proper referencing of digital content is increasingly critical. The Identification of Parties who contributes to content is key to ensure efficient discovery services and royalty tracking. Far from being simple numbers, Party Identifiers such as ISNI, are built on rigorous structures meeting the requirements of diverse media such as books, music or films. Designed to accurately identify Natural Persons and Legal Entities alike, Party Identifiers must also support language variances, cultural diversity and stringent data privacy regulations.

7Kim, S. ; Oh, S.: Users' relevance criteria for evaluating answers in a social Q&A site.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 60(2009) no.4, S.716-727.
Abstract: This study examines the criteria questioners use to select the best answers in a social Q&A site (Yahoo! Answers) within the theoretical framework of relevance research. A social Q&A site is a novel environment where people voluntarily ask and answer questions. In Yahoo! Answers, the questioner selects the answer that best satisfies his or her question and leaves comments on it. Under the assumption that the comments reflect the reasons why questioners select particular answers as the best, this study analyzed 2,140 comments collected from Yahoo! Answers during December 2007. The content analysis identified 23 individual relevance criteria in six classes: Content, Cognitive, Utility, Information Sources, Extrinsic, and Socioemotional. A major finding is that the selection criteria used in a social Q&A site have considerable overlap with many relevance criteria uncovered in previous relevance studies, but that the scope of socio-emotional criteria has been expanded to include the social aspect of this environment. Another significant finding is that the relative importance of individual criteria varies according to topic categories. Socioemotional criteria are popular in discussion-oriented categories, content-oriented criteria in topic-oriented categories, and utility criteria in self-help categories. This study generalizes previous relevance studies to a new environment by going beyond an academic setting.

8Kushwoh, S.S. ; Gautam, J.N. ; Singh, R.: Migration from CDS / ISIS to KOHA : a case study of data conversion from CCF to MARC 21.
In: International cataloging & bliographic control. 38(2009) no.1, S.6-12.
Abstract: Standards are important for quality and interoperability in any system. Bibliographic record creation standards such as MARC 21 (Machine Readable Catalogue), CCF (Common Communication Format), UNIMARC (Universal MARC) and their local variations, are in practice all across the library community. ILMS (Integrated Library Management Systems) are using these standards for the design of databases and the creation of bibliographic records. Their use is important for uniformity of the system and bibliographic data, but there are problems when a library wants to switch over from one system to another using different standards. This paper discusses migration from one record standard to another, mapping of data and related issues. Data exported from CDS/ISIS CCF based records to KOHA MARC 21 based records are discussed as a case study. This methodology, with few modifications, can be applied for migration of data in other bibliographicformats too. Freeware tools can be utilized for migration.

12Yu, B.-M. ; Roh, S.-Z.: ¬The effects of menu design on information-seeking performance and user's attitude on the World Wide Web.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 53(2002) no.11, S.923-933.
Abstract: Yu and Roh investigate the effects of providing a simple menu, a global and local navigation menu, and a pull-down menu on searching and browsing speed, as well as the user's perception of the appeal of each menu form and the degree of disorientation it might cause. The site was a shopping center with items and prices that could be approached by way of a simple menu with a hierarchal structure, a menu which retained global links across the top of the screen, with local links in a frame to the left, or a pull down menu design. Each of 21 student subjects was given ten searching and five browsing tasks assigned in three treatments, and responded to a post exercise questionnaire using a five point Likert scale on attitude toward the menus. Time was measured from the subjects' indication of starting until the price was provided, and the procedure repeated three times over a three-week interval with treatment switching. A repeated measure ANOVA showed a significant difference among the designs on search speed with the pull-down menu leading the other two. In browsing speed pull-down and global/local were not significantly different but both bettered the simple menu. Attitude and disorientation showed no significant differences.

13Loh, S. ; Oliveira, J.P.M. de ; Gastal, F.L.: Knowledge discovery in textual documentation : qualitative and quantitative analyses.
In: Journal of documentation. 57(2001) no.5, S.577-590.
Abstract: This paper presents an approach for performing knowledge discovery in texts through qualitative and quantitative analyses of high-level textual characteristics. Instead of applying mining techniques on attribute values, terms or keywords extracted from texts, the discovery process works over conceptss identified in texts. Concepts represent real world events and objects, and they help the user to understand ideas, trends, thoughts, opinions and intentions present in texts. The approach combines a quasi-automatic categorisation task (for qualitative analysis) with a mining process (for quantitative analysis). The goal is to find new and useful knowledge inside a textual collection through the use of mining techniques applied over concepts (representing text content). In this paper, an application of the approach to medical records of a psychiatric hospital is presented. The approach helps physicians to extract knowledge about patients and diseases. This knowledge may be used for epidemiological studies, for training professionals and it may be also used to support physicians to diagnose and evaluate diseases.

14Oh, S.G.: Document representation and retrieval using empirical facts : evaluation of a pilot system.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science. 49(1998) no.10, S.920-931.
Abstract: This article investigates the potentialities of using empirical variables and their associated statistical relationships in document representation and retrieval. To this end, a newly devised empirical fact retrieval system (EFRS) was evaluated in comparison to a simulated traditional retrieval system (TRS) involving a set of predetermined empirical queries. Results indicate that the EFRS generally outperformed the TRS in terms of precision, search effort, and measures of user satisfaction. Possible advantages of the EFRS, as well as the necessity of establishing an efficient methos for extracting empirical facts, are discussed
