Abstract: Hierarchic document clustering has been widely applied to information retrieval (IR) on the grounds of its potential improved effectiveness over inverted file search (IFS). However, previous research has been inconclusive as to whether clustering does bring improvements. In this paper we take the view that if hierarchic clustering is applied to search results (query-specific clustering), then it has the potential to increase the retrieval effectiveness compared both to that of static clustering and of conventional IFS. We conducted a number of experiments using five document collections and four hierarchic clustering methods. Our results show that the effectiveness of query-specific clustering is indeed higher, and suggest that there is scope for its application to IR.

Abstract: Information is and always has been an elusive concept; nevertheless many philosophers, mathematicians, logicians and computer scientists have felt that it is fundamental. Many attempts have been made to come up with some sensible and intuitively acceptable definition of information; up to now, none of these have succeeded. This work is based on the approach followed by Dretske, Barwise, and Devlin, who claimed that the notion of information starts from the position that given an ontology of objects individuated by a cognitive agent, it makes sense to speak of the information an object (e.g., a text, an image, a video) contains about another object (e.g. the query). This phenomenon is captured by the flow of information between objects. Its exploitation is the task of an information retrieval system. These authors proposes a theory of information that provides an analysis of the concept of information (any type, from any media) and the manner in which intelligent organisms (referring to as cognitive agents) handle and respond to the information picked up from their environment. They defined the nature of information flow and the mechanisms that give rise to such a flow. The theory, which is based on Situation Theory, is expressed with a calculus defined on channels. The calculus was defined so that it satisfies properties that are attributes to information and its flows. This paper demonstrates the connection between this calculus and information retrieval, and porposes a model of an information retrieval system based on this calculus

Abstract: Explains briefly what constitutes the imaging process and explains how imaging can be used in information retrieval. Proposes an approach based on the concept of: 'a term is a possible world'; which enables the exploitation of term to term relationships which are estimated using an information theoretic measure. Reports results of an evaluation exercise to compare the performance of imaging retrieval, using possible world semantics, with a benchmark and using the Cranfield 2 document collection to measure precision and recall. Initially, the performance imaging retrieval was seen to be better but statistical analysis proved that the difference was not significant. The problem with imaging retrieval lies in the amount of computations needed to be performed at run time and a later experiement investigated the possibility of reducing this amount. Abstract: The evaluation of an implication by imaging is a logical technique developed in the framework of modal logic. Its interpretation in the context of a 'possible worlds' semantics is very appealing for information retrieval. In 19889, Van Rijsbergen suggested its use for solving 1 of the fundamental problems of logical models of information retrieval: the evaluation of the logical implication that a document is relevant to a query if it implies the query. Since then, others have tried to follow that suggestion proposing models and applications, though without much success. Most of these approaches had as their basic assunption the consideration that ' document is a possible world'. Proposes instead an approach based on a completely different assumption: ' a term is a possible world'. This approach enables the exploitation of term-term relationships which are estimated using an information theoretic measure

Abstract: Describes a system called SILOL which is based on a logical-linguistic model of document retrieval systems. SILOL uses a shallow semantic translation of natural language texts into a first order predicate representation in performing a document indexing and retrieval process. Some preliminary experiments have been carried out to test the retrieval effectiveness of this system. The results obtained show improvements in the level of retrieval effectiveness, which demonstrate that the approach of using a semantic theory of natural language and logic in document retrieval systems is a valid one

Abstract: Many retrieval experiments have been based on inadequate test collections, and current research is hampered by the lack of proper collections. This short review does not attempt a fully docuemted survey of all the collections used in the past decade: hopefully representative examples have been studied to throw light on the requriements test collections should meet, to show how past collections have been defective, and to suggest guidelines for a future "ideal" test collection. This specifications for this collection can be taken as an indirect comment on our present state of knowledge of major retrieval system variables, and experience in conducting experiments.

Abstract: Many retrievalexperiments are intended to discover ways of improving performance, taking the results obtained with some particular technique as a baseline. The fact that substantial alterations to a system often have little or no effect on particular collections is puzzling. This may be due to the initially poor seperation of relevant and non-relevant documents. The paper presents a procedure for characterizing this seperation for a collection, which can be used to show whether proposed modifications of the base system are likely to be useful.
