  Abstract: In the global research community, English has become the main language of scholarly publishing in many disciplines. At the same time, online machine translation systems have become increasingly easy to access and use. Is this a researcher's match made in heaven, or the road to publication perdition? Here Lynne Bowker and Jairo Buitrago Ciro introduce the concept of machine translation literacy, a new kind of literacy for scholars and librarians in the digital age. For scholars, they explain how machine translation works, how it is (or could be) used for scholarly communication, and how both native and non-native English-speakers can write in a translation-friendly way in order to harness its potential. Native English speakers can continue to write in English, but expand the global reach of their research by making it easier for their peers around the world to access and understand their works, while non-native English speakers can write in their mother tongues, but leverage machine translation technology to help them produce draft publications in English. For academic librarians, the authors provide a framework for supporting researchers in all disciplines as they grapple with producing translation-friendly texts and using machine translation for scholarly communication - a form of support that will only become more important as campuses become increasingly international and as universities continue to strive to excel on the global stage.   Abstract: Bibliometrics has moved well beyond the mere tracking of bibliographic citations. The web enables new ways to measure scholarly productivity and impact, making available tools and data that can reveal patterns of intellectual activity and impact that were previously invisible: mentions, acknowledgments, endorsements, downloads, recommendations, blog posts, tweets. This book describes recent theoretical and practical advances in metrics-based research, examining a variety of alternative metrics -- or "altmetrics" -- while also considering the ethical and cultural consequences of relying on metrics to assess the quality of scholarship. Once the domain of information scientists and mathematicians, bibliometrics is now a fast-growing, multidisciplinary field that ranges from webometrics to scientometrics to influmetrics.   Abstract: Nicht nur Individuen, sondern auch Kulturen bilden ein Gedächtnis aus, um Identitäten herzustellen, Legitimation zu gewinnen und Ziele zu bestimmen. Aleida Assmann fragt nach den verschiedenen Aufgaben kultureller Erinnerung, ihren Medien (wie Schrift, Bilder, Denkmäler) im historischen und technischen Wandel sowie nach den Umgangsformen mit gespeichertem Wissen, bei denen neben Politik und Wissenschaft auch der Kunst eine wachsende Bedeutung zukommt. ; Mit dem Eintritt ins digitale Zeitalter befinden wir uns an einer Medienschwelle, an der sich die Bedingungen des kulturellen Gedächtnisses tiefgreifend verändern. Während die Verwaltung von Daten immer leichter wird, geht die Haltbarkeit der Datenträger drastisch zurück. Papyri konnten im Wüstensand Jahrtausende überdauern, Bücher halten einige Jahrhunderte, Taschenbücher einige Jahrzehnte, Disketten nur noch einige Jahre. Wie wird sich das kulturelle Gedächtnis in Zukunft gestalten, wenn die Speichermedien immer kürzeren Verfallsdaten unterliegen? Unter solchen Umständen wird das Bewußtsein für die Vorkehrungen geschärft, die in der Kultur für die Konservierung und Bereitstellung vergangenen Wissens aufgewendet worden sind. Woher kommt das Interesse am Aufbau von Erinnerungsräumen, der ein wichtiges Ziel kultureller Anstrengungen ist? Wie werden Erinnerungen, die doch zunächst immer individuelle Erinnerungen sind, zu allgemein verbindlichen? Wie geht man mit solchen Erinnerungen um - nutzt man sie zur Bestätigung der Gegenwart, zum Anstoß einer Erneuerung oder zur Relativierung des eigenen Standpunktes? Und welche Rolle spielen dabei die Medien der Erinnerung; wie wirken sich der Medienwechsel des Buchdrucks, der Photographie, der elektronischen Aufzeichnung auf die Gestalt und Qualität kultureller Erinnerungsräume aus? Da diese kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellung die Zusammenführung einer weitgestreuten Spezialforschung nötig macht, werden die Grenzen der Nationen, Epochen, Künste und Disziplinen unbeirrt überschritten. Und obwohl literarische Texte im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen, kommen ebenso historische, kunsthistorische, philosophische und psychologische Fragen zur Sprache.

Die über 400 Seiten lange Monografie von de Bellis gibt in acht Kapiteln einen detaillierten und sehr präzisen Überblick über die Bibliometrie und die Zitationsanalyse, ihre Natur und Entwicklung, ihre Kontroverse und Prognose. . . . Das Buch von de Bellis ist sehr empfehlenswert für alle die beabsichtigen, sich mit dieser neuen Wissenschaft zu beschäftigen. Es endet mit folgendem Statement: "Scientometricians have to learn to live in a multidimensional world". Und genau hier liegt die Herausforderung und Schönheit dieses Metiers."

  Abstract: The latest edition of this standard reference work has grown to 1800 pages listing nearly 23,000 titles. Once again, the material is divided into five sections: subject headings, subject guides, bibliographic guides, title indexes, and illustrator indexes. This arrangement enables the reader to locate books on a particular topic and to determine the subject of a specific book when only the author, illustrator, or title is known. The more than 1200 subject headings are augmented by subheadings and cross references, which is especially useful because this tool is as much for reader's advisory as it is for collection building. Full bibliographic information for each title included is provided in the bibliographic guide, although price and in-print status are not. This is not a problem, however, since reader's advisory use doesn't usually require pricing information, and there are now several electronic means of obtaining such information quickly and easily. As in previous editions, there is an excellent introductory essay titled "Genesis of the English-Language Picture Book," with as many suggested titles for further reading as might be found on a children's literature course syllabus. About the only drawback is the lack of annotations, but had these been added for each title included, the book would rival the Manhattan telephone directory in size. All in all, this remains an essential resource for just about any reference collection.
