1Banerjee, D. ; Ghosh, S.S. ; Mondal, T.M.: OnE : an ontology evaluation framework.
In: Knowledge organization. 47(2020) no.4, S.283-299.
Abstract: A comprehensive set of evaluation criteria, named OnE, for evaluating ontologies has been proposed in this paper. Each criterion of OnE has been defined in a way such that together they are capable of evaluating any ontology from all aspects. The process of using OnE for evaluation has been demonstrated by evaluating chemical ontologies. Also, for this purpose, an ontology on the domain of agricultural chemicals has been constructed by following the human-centric faceted approach for ontology construction (HCFOC) and has been evaluated using OnE. The results obtained after the evaluation has provided insights about the ontologies. The constructed ontology aims to support any information system trying to support farmers in the process of decision making while selecting chemicals for use in agriculture. Also, it is envisaged that the demonstrated ontology and the set of evaluation criteria named OnE will redefine ontology evaluation and make it easy while making a strong impact on ontology developers.

In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. 67(2016) no.9, S.2166-2180.
Abstract: We investigated a subject directory in the US Agriculture Department-Economic Research Service portal. Parent-child relationships, related connections among the categories, and related connections among the subcategories in the subject directory were optimized using social network analysis. The optimization results were assessed by both density analysis and edge strength analysis methods. In addition, the results were evaluated by domain experts. From this study, it is recommended that four subcategories be switched from their original four categories into two different categories as a result of the parent-child relationship optimization.?It is also recommended that 132 subcategories be moved to 40 subcategories and that eight categories be moved to two categories as a result of the related connection optimization. The findings show that optimization boosted the densities of the optimized categories, and the recommended connections of both the related categories and subcategories were stronger than the existing connections of the related categories and subcategories. This paper provides visual displays of the optimization analysis as well as suggestions to enhance the subject directory of this portal.

Abstract: In recent years as a complement to the traditional surveillance reporting systems there is a great interest in developing methodologies for early detection of potential health threats from unstructured text present on the Internet. In this context, we examined the relevance of the combination of expert knowledge and automatic term extraction in the creation of appropriate Internet search queries for the acqui sition of disease outbreak news. We propose a measure that is the number of relevant disease outbreak news detected in function of the terms automatically extracted from a set of example Google and PubMED corpora. Due to the recent emergence we have used the African swine fever as a disease example.

Abstract: Improvement of most animal and plant species of agronomical interest in the near future has become an international stake because of the increasing demand for feeding a growing world population and to mitigate the reduction of the industrial resources. The recent advent of genomic tools contributed to improve the discovery of linkage between molecular markers and genes that are involved in the control of traits of agronomical interest such as grain number or disease resistance. This information is mostly published as scientific papers but rarely available in databases. Here, we present a method aiming at automatically extract this information from the scientific literature and relying on a knowledge model of the target information and on the WheatPhenotype ontology that we developed for this purpose. The information extraction results were evaluated and integrated into the on-line semantic search engine AlvisIR WheatMarker.

Abstract: Sources like thesauri or taxonomies are already used as input in ontology development process. Some of them are also published on the LOD using the SKOS format. Reusing this type of sources to build an ontology is not an easy task. The ontology developer has to face different syntax and different modelling goals. We propose in this paper a new methodology to transform several non-ontological sources into a single ontology. We take into account: the redundancy of the knowledge extracted from sources in order to discover the consensual knowledge and Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) to guide the transformation process. We have evaluated our methodology by creating an ontology on wheat taxonomy from three sources: Agrovoc thesaurus, TaxRef taxonomy, NCBI taxonomy.

Abstract: This paper describes an ontology for modeling any food processing chain. It is intended for data and knowledge integration and sharing. The proposed ontology (Onto-FP) is built based on four main concepts: Product, Operation, Attribute and Observation. This ontology is able to represent food product transformations as well as temporal sequence of food processes. The Onto-FP can be easy integrated to other domains due to its consistencies with DOLCE ontology. We detail an application in the domain of winemaking and prove that it can be easy queried to answer questions related to data classification, food process itineraries and incomplete data identification.

Abstract: Within the framework of the European project EcoBioCap (ECOefficient BIOdegradable Composite Advanced Packaging), aiming at conceiving the next generation of food packagings, we introduce an argumentation-based tool for management of conflicting viewpoints between preferences expressed by the involved parties (food and packaging industries, health and waste management authorities, consumers, etc.). In this paper we recall briefly the principles underlying the reasoning process, and we detail the main functionalities and the architecture of the argumentation tool covering the overall reasoning steps starting from formal representation of text arguments and ending by extraction of justified preferences. Finally, we detail its operational functioning through a real life case study to determine the justifiable choices between recyclable, compostable and biodegradable packaging materials based on stakeholders' arguments.

Abstract: In this article, we report on the status of graphs in 21 scientific agricultural journals indexed in Thomson Reuters' Web of Knowledge. We analyze the authors' use of graphs in this context in relation to the quality of these journals as measured by their 2-year impact factors. We note a substantial variability in the use of graphs in this context: For one journal, 100% of the papers include graphs, whereas for others only about 50% of them include graphs. We also show that higher impact agricultural journals publish more papers with graphs and that there are more graphs in these papers than in those in journals with lower impact factors (r = +0.40).

Abstract: The categories/isolates are broadly conceived as common and special. The common categories are applicable to all the classes of subjects in a Classification system, whereas the specials are applicable within a domain or specified classes of a classification system. The CC has represented some unique special categories, especially in the Agriculture Subject schedule, and such a provision is not seen in any other classification system; not even in any other subject schedule of Colon Classification. These special categories are termed here as "Domain Specific Categories". The paper analyses the thematic relationships within and outside the subject schedule with potential applications in devising a scheme of metadata as demonstrated in a research study on Indian Medicinal Plants. The other potential applications of such thematic relationships are in the creation of semantic maps and in linking concepts from different domains of knowledge.

ISBN 978-1-12479532-4
Abstract: The amount and complexity of information available in a digital form is already huge and new information is being produced every day. Retrieving information relevant to address a particular need becomes a significant issue. This work utilizes knowledge organization systems (KOS), such as thesauri and ontologies and applies information extraction (IE) and computational linguistics (CL) techniques to organize, manage and retrieve information stored in digital collections in the agricultural domain. Two real world applications of the approach have been developed and are available and actively used by the public. An ontology is used to manage the Water Conservation Digital Library holding a dynamic collection of various types of digital resources in the domain of urban water conservation in Florida, USA. The ontology based back-end powers a fully operational web interface, available at http://library.conservefloridawater.org. The system has demonstrated numerous benefits of the ontology application, including accurate retrieval of resources, information sharing and reuse, and has proved to effectively facilitate information management. The major difficulty encountered with the approach is that large and dynamic number of concepts makes it difficult to keep the ontology consistent and to accurately catalog resources manually. To address the aforementioned issues, a combination of IE and CL techniques, such as Vector Space Model and probabilistic parsing, with the use of Agricultural Thesaurus were adapted to automatically extract concepts important for each of the texts in the Best Management Practices (BMP) Publication Library--a collection of documents in the domain of agricultural BMPs in Florida available at http://lyra.ifas.ufl.edu/LIB. A new approach of domain-specific concept discovery with the use of Internet search engine was developed. Initial evaluation of the results indicates significant improvement in precision of information extraction. The approach presented in this work focuses on problems unique to agriculture and natural resources domain, such as domain specific concepts and vocabularies, but should be applicable to any collection of texts in digital format. It may be of potential interest for anyone who needs to effectively manage a collection of digital resources.

14Bernaoui, R. ; Hassoun, M.: Knowledge awareness and standards in agricultural research in Algeria : prerequisites for a national information system of high added value.
In: Knowledge organization. 38(2011) no.5, S.414-424.
Abstract: This paper gives a review of a survey in 2008 on Algerian scientists specialized in agronomic, veterinary and biological sciences, in order to analyze their information behavior and beliefs to evaluate the importance of shared knowledge standards and values. Algeria strongly suffers from insufficient agricultural production and needs to fit into this logic and to use its search results as source of innovation and performance in its current strategy of reducing its food expenditures. However, one of its limitations consists in the lack of tools to foster the capitalization and enhancement of its scientific output. The answer is to propose an information model that considers all connections between actors involved in research as well as those in development. The collected data reveal an essential need for the creation of a convenient framework for the evaluation and sharing of knowledge as a collective good. It is aimed at the creation of an information system with high added value (National Observatory of the Agronomic Research), including a uniform thesaurus in the field specific to the agronomy for the national device of research.

In: Bibliotheksdienst. 44(2010) H.6, S.616-627.
(Themen: Digitale Bibliothek)
Abstract: Im Jahr 2007 hat die GWLB gemeinsam mit der HAAB, der Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg und mehreren Stiftungen die Königliche Gartenbibliothek Herrenhausen erworben.

In: Library review. 57(2008) no.3, S.200-212.
Abstract: Purpose - The main objective of the AGROVOC Concept Server (CS) is to create a collaborative reference platform and a "one-stop" shop for a pool of commonly used concepts related to agriculture, containing terms, definitions and relationships between terms in multiple languages derived from various sources. This paper aims to address the issues. Design/methodology/approach - The CS offers a centralised facility where the agricultural information management community can build and share agricultural knowledge in a collaborative environment. Findings - The advantages of the CS are its extensibility and modularity that provide the possibility to extend the type of information that can be stored in this system based on user/community needs. Research limitations/implications - Further investigation still needs to be done on the modularisation of the CS (i.e. the creation of separated ontologies that can still be connected, in order to have domain-related ontologies and to allow for better performance of the CS). Practical implications - The CS serves as starting point for the development of specific domain ontologies where multilinguality and the localised representation of knowledge are essential issues. Furthermore, it will offer additional services in order to expose the knowledge to be consumed by other applications. Originality/value - The CS Workbench provides the AGROVOC partners with the possibility to directly and collaboratively edit the AGROVOC CS. It thus provides the opportunity for direct and open "many-to-many" communication links between communities, avoiding decentralised communication between partners and duplication of effort. For the international community, it may allow users to manage, re-use or extend agriculture-related knowledge for better interoperability and for improved services.

17Gil-Leiva, I. ; Alonso-Arroyo, A.: Keywords given by authors of scientific articles in database descriptors.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 58(2007) no.8, S.1175-1187.
Abstract: In this article, the authors analyze the keywords given by authors of scientific articles and the descriptors assigned to the articles to ascertain the presence of the keywords in the descriptors. Six-hundred forty INSPEC (Information Service for Physics, Engineering, and Computing), CAB (Current Agriculture Bibliography) abstracts, ISTA (Information Science and Technology Abstracts), and LISA (Library and Information Science Abstracts) database records were consulted. After detailed comparisons, it was found that keywords provided by authors have an important presence in the database descriptors studied; nearly 25% of all the keywords appeared in exactly the same form as descriptors, with another 21% though normalized, still detected in the descriptors. This means that almost 46% of keywords appear in the descriptors, either as such or after normalization. Elsewhere, three distinct indexing policies appear, one represented by INSPEC and LISA (indexers seem to have freedom to assign the descriptors they deem necessary); another is represented by CAB (no record has fewer than four descriptors and, in general, a large number of descriptors is employed). In contrast, in ISTA, a certain institutional code exists towards economy in indexing because 84% of records contain only four descriptors.
