Abstract: Ranaganathan's chain indexing technique is devised as a complementary and supplementary tool to classification schemes. However, due to the efficiency and economy, this technique can effectively be made use of in deriving alphabetical subject indexes for any indexing/abstracting services. The authors have made a close analysis of LISA to elucidate the extent of the impact of chain indexing in it. Some of the problems found in the application of chain procedure in alphabetical subject indexing are identified and the solution found in LISA has been explained

Abstract: The last several years have seen the evolution of prototype systems exploiting the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as an interface to online catalogs. One such system, calles DORS (Dewy Online Retrieval System) was developed at the University of California, Los Angeles by the authors. The feature distinguishing this system is an automatically generated chain index, in particular the algorithms that were created for its automatic generation and the problems that were encountered. The problems were of three kinds: those that were overcome, but were not for lack of time and resources and those that we believe cannot be overcome. The paper concludes with suggestions for future resaerch and possible formatting changes to the DDC feature headings that would facilitate chain-index generation

Abstract: Describes the chain indexing procedure for deriving subject index entries for a classified catalogue. The problems involved in deriving subject entires based on DDC numbers due to defects in the hierarchical structure of the notation and lack of precise terminology are studied and solutions are suggested. Altenative solutions for tackling the problems of synonyms are also discussed

In: Indexers on indexing: a selection of articles published by The Indexer. Ed.: L.M. Harrod. New York : Bowker, 1978. S.304-316.
Abstract: Describes chain indexing in LISA and the modifications to the technique made necessary by a practical working situation. The method was adopted on a "Keep it simple and stupid" basis. However, some permutations and a number of qualifying words have been introduced in order to make entries more understandable. Other difficulties have emerged because the subject field of LISA is connected so closely with social institutions and human relationships. There is also the problem of certain foreign language terms which are virtually meaningless when translated into English. A retrieval test carried out by E.M. Keen had a useful by-product in showing that the layout of the LISA indexes could be improved and the use of bold lead terms is now under consideration

12Mineur, B.W.: Relations in chains.
In: Journal of librarianship. 5(1973), S.175-202.
Abstract: The criticisms made against chain indexing are reviewed, and PRECIS briefly considered as a possible (but improbable) general substitute for indexing. The failures of chain indexing arise mainly from an inherited overemphasis on generic relationships, encouraged by careless use of the term 'chain'. The use of symbols to represent relations between terms is suggested for the chain index, to emphasize syntagmatic relations and prevent ambiguity. These relationships can be used to manipulate the index terms into likely additional index approaches, employing the logical concepts of symmetry and transitivity which derive from a structure inherent between relations, a sort of 'metarelations'. The transitivityy of the relations of action or property to object over the relation of material to object are particularly considered, and clues to this relational structure obtained from Aristotle's theory of causation
