21Reid, B.J.: Information and library literature on CD-ROM : a review article.
In: Refer. 9(1993) no.3, S.7-8,10-13.
Abstract: Compares the 3 mainstream CD-ROM bibliographic databases covering the literature of library and information science: LISA PLUS (the CD-ROM version of LISA); Library Literature (WilsonDisc) and Information Science Abstracts Plus (published by SilverPlatter and incorporating a subset of ERIC). Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 databases in terms of: scope and coverage, Currency; user interface and search facilities; and the individual features of each database. Concludes the LISA PLUS is the most useful in a UK context, because of its excellent, balanced, international coverage. However, some aspects of its subject indexing gave cause for concern (LiLi gave similar cause for concern) and its user interface was judged not to be very user friedly. Nevertheless, where topics move from the periphery of the centre of the LIS field, LISA accurately reflects this. LISA's coverage of the literature of CD-ROM applications in the LIS environment is unmatched. ISA Plus has a very friedly user interface, but virtually uncontrolled terms and can only be regarded as a complementary source because of its US emphasis, though it is an important back up source for any topic in the information technology and computing areas. Lack of currency was a concern for users of all 3 services

23Browne, G.: Scope notes for LISA subject headings.
In: Online review. 16(1992) no.1, S.3-16.
Abstract: Scope notes are added to some subject headings in thesauri to make their scope, meaning, usage and history clearer to users. In the thesaurus contained in the first edition of the online user manual for LISA (OUM1), scope notes are used for 7 message types and in one case 15 note patterns are used to express the same meaning. In the second edition (OUM2) the scope notes are expressed more consistently, and are mainly used to indicate indexing errors. Many note in OUM1 refer to the use of terms in the LISA faceted classification scheme, but this schem is not adequately explained in the introductions to either OUM1, OUM2 or the printed versions of LISA. In OUM2 there are few notes for the use of terms in combination; however, terms are still used in combination with guidance being given through USE references. In some cases the notes are unnecessary because extra headings have been added to the thesaurus. Concludes that scope notes are essential to make thesauri effective and easy to use as tools for searching online and printed information services and scope notes should be carefully consructed and added to any term where meaning and use in the database could be ambiguous

25Chu, C.M. ; Ajiferuke, I.: Quality of indexing in library and information science databases.
In: Online review. 13(1989), S.11-35.
Abstract: This study compares the quality of indexing in library and information science databases (Library Literature (LL), Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), and Information Science Abstracts (ISA)). An alternative method to traditional retrieval effectiveness tests, suggested by White and Griffith in their paper 'Quality of indexing in online databases' is adopted to measure the quality of the controlled vocabulary of each database ... Our analysis shows that LISA has the best quality of indexing out of the three databases

26Hartley, R.J.: LISA on CD-ROM : an evaluation.
In: Online review. 13(1989) no.1, S.53-56.
Abstract: Presents a detailed evaluation of the CD-ROM data base Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), published by Library Association Publishing Ltd in partnership with SilverPlatter Information Inc. Describes the SilcerPlatter search software and gives results of test searches carried out using the CD-ROM and DIALOG on-line versions of LISA. The annual cost of subscribing to LISA on CD-ROM is 995 US dollars or 750 dollars to subscribers of other SilverPlatter data bases. LISA on CD-ROM will be of most interest to institutions which make heavy use of the on-line version and are not discouraged by the low updating frequency.

27Moore, N.L.: LISA indexing : economic aspects of controlled indexing.
In: Indexer. 16(1988), S.11-16.
Abstract: Examines the accepted principles of controlled indexing, in published abstracting/indexing services and databases from the unusual aspect of the publisher's need to minimize production costs. Detailed information concerning the producution of LISA is presented showing income and costs. Ways in which factors involved in controlled indexing may be seen to manifest themselves in production parameters are shown by plotting graphs of the numbers of abstracts and index pages against numbers of abstracts for 77 individual issues of LISA. The close fit of the data to straight lines, with correlation coefficients approaching unity, provides a means of managing the size of individual issues to yield minimum printing/binding costs. The extended use of the CRG classification notation to provide automatic extraction of chain indexing strings and associated cross-references is described in detail. The gains in staff productivity resulting from this and other procedures are indicated with reference to the expansion in LISA's coverage between 1978 and 1984.

32Bakewell, K.G.B.: Indexing LISA.
In: Indexer. 13(1983), S.261-264.
Abstract: Reviews the cumulative index to LISA, the leading English language abstracting journal on librarianship and information science and maintains that the index is a vital reference tool for those who do not have access to an on-line search service. Dascribes the index which is arranged in sequences of name and subject. Maintains that the introduction could be longer as the name index in particular requires more explanation, and illustrates by means of axamples. Lists strengths and weaknesses of the name index. Asserts that the subject index will receive greater use and warrants some explanation which is not provided. Suggests that the value of chain indexing is negated by divorce from classification. Affirms the enormous value of the work as an indispensable reference tool

In: Indexers on indexing: a selection of articles published by The Indexer. Ed.: L.M. Harrod. New York : Bowker, 1978. S.304-316.
Abstract: Describes chain indexing in LISA and the modifications to the technique made necessary by a practical working situation. The method was adopted on a "Keep it simple and stupid" basis. However, some permutations and a number of qualifying words have been introduced in order to make entries more understandable. Other difficulties have emerged because the subject field of LISA is connected so closely with social institutions and human relationships. There is also the problem of certain foreign language terms which are virtually meaningless when translated into English. A retrieval test carried out by E.M. Keen had a useful by-product in showing that the layout of the LISA indexes could be improved and the use of bold lead terms is now under consideration

37Whatley, A.: Abstracting the literature of library science.
In: Library Association Record. 73(1971) no.3, S.45-48.
Abstract: Examines LISA 1969 from the user's point of view. Criticizes the CRG classification notation for its complexity and cites difficulties in use. Use of a broader classification is recommended. Examples are quoted to illustrate that the subject index is not as helpful as it should be. Observes that the notation only is indexed and makes a plea for the contents of the abstracts to be indexed
