1Katzmayr, M. ; Putz, M. ; Fessler, G.: Evaluationsmethoden zur Bewertung von Aggregatordatenbanken am Beispiel von ProQuest ABI/Inform und EBSCO Business Source Premier.
In: Information - Wissenschaft und Praxis. 56(2005) H.3, S.175-180.
Abstract: An der Universitätsbibliothek der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien wurden im Rahmen einer Lizenzierungsentscheidung die Datenbanken ABI/Inform Proquest und EBSCO Business Source Premier verglichen.

2Greenberg, J.: Automatic query expansion via lexical-semantic relationships.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and technology. 52(2001) no.5, S.402-415.
Abstract: Structured thesauri encode equivalent, hierarchical, and associative relationships and have been developed as indexing/retrieval tools. Despite the fact that these tools provide a rich semantic network of vocabulary terms, they are seldom employed for automatic query expansion (QE) activities. This article reports on an experiment that examined whether thesaurus terms, related to query in a specified semantic way (as synonyms and partial-synonyms (SYNs), narrower terms (NTs), related terms (RTs), and broader terms (BTs)), could be identified as having a more positive impact on retrieval effectiveness when added to a query through automatic QE. The research found that automatic QE via SYNs and NTs increased relative recall with a decline in precision that was not statistically significant, and that automatic QE via RTs and BTs increased relative recall with a decline in precision that was statistically significant. Recallbased and a precision-based ranking orders for automatic QE via semantically encoded thesauri terminology were identified. Mapping results found between enduser query terms and the ProQuest Controlled Vocabulary (1997) (the thesaurus used in this study) are reported, and future research foci related to the investigation are discussed

3Jascó, P.: CD-ROM databases with full-page images.
In: Computers in libraries. 18(1998) no.2, S.33-35.
Abstract: Full text databases often cannot substitute for the original print document because they include only the plain text, but not the figures, charts, tables, and screen shots that are useful and sometimes essential for understanding the article. Discusses 3 recently released page-image databases on CD-ROM. UMI's ProQuest Medical Library includes searchable bibliographic records and abstracts for about 120 medical and nursing journals as well as the facsimile of the articles with users able to view the articles in full-page format, just as they first appeared in print: ADONIS Electronic Journal Subscription Services CD offers 400 biomedical journals in CD-ROM page-image format; and Optipat's OptiDisk Custom CD-ROMs provide a customizable service for US patents where customers can order US patents in text only, or image only, or in text and image format with or without a searchable index by submitting the patent numbers required

6Mandelbaum, J.: ProQuest full-text newspapers : an online newsstand at your library.
In: Database. 21(1998) no.3, S.42-43.
Abstract: ProQuest Full-Text Newspapers from UMI enables subcribing libraries to make local, regional and national newspapers available from a custom database. It is accessible on the WWW. Describes searching, browsing publications, and viewing results. Recommends the quality, and depth of the database and its interface, but points out difficulties in searching selected publications rather than the entire database and that the 200 document limit may be too retrictive for some users

7Buntrock, R.E.: UMI's applied science and technology plus.
In: Information today. 14(1997) no.6, S.35-36.
Abstract: Abstracts and indexes have been migrating from print to digital for over 2 decades but original full text records, both text and image, are available in a variety of media. Producers of fully electronic journals are planning to index their content rather than rely on full text browsing, even with more powerful search engines. Reviews UMI's ProQuest on CD-ROM, a combination of HW Wilson Applied Science and Technology Abstracts (AST) and full text images of the original articles. The product is currently for DOS with a Windows version planned. Discusses searching and problems

8Combs, J.: ProQuest Direct : remote research and electronic document delivery from UMI.
In: Library software review. 16(1997) no.1, S.50-63.
Abstract: Discusses the current state of the WWW as a useful tool for researchers in relation to the virtual library. Products such as IAC, EBSCO and UMI offer access using a client-server model and Internet data communications to remote full text databases of sufficient size and sscope to be useful to serious researchers. Reviews the client software for Windows to ProQuest Direct from UMI. UMI has a content base of over 17.000 periodicals, 7.000 newspapers, and 1,4 million dissertations. On 17 Oct 96 UMI introduced access to its servers through the WWW, and an update to its ProQuest Direct Windows client. Remote access includes Z39.50 and LYNX browsers. Covers operating environment; user interface; searching; retrieving documents; and documentation and help

12Valas, G.: Comparison of some widespread CD-ROM information retrieval software packages.
In: Online and CD-ROM review. 18(1994) no.4, S.211-227.
Abstract: Reports the results of a study, conducted at the National Technical Information Centre and Library (OMIKK), Hungary, to compare 5 popular proprietary CD-ROM searching software packages: OPTIWARE; BRS/Search; ProQuest; SPIRS; and Dialog OnDisc Manager. Software evaluation was based on analysis of a range of CD-ROM bibliographic databases (with the exception of BRS/Search for which the library held no bibliographic databases) and focused on: response times for various activities (logging on, searching, retrieval, display); other performance factors; direct searching features (Boolean operators, proximity operators, arithmetic relations, truncation); index browsing; search strategy handling; display possibilities; output possibilities; and ergonomic and user friendliness factors. No general conclusions are drawn and users are left to draw their own conclusions
