3Cohen, J.D.: Massive query resolution for rapid selective dissemination of information.
In: Journal of the American Society for Information Science. 50(1999) no.3, S.195-206.
Abstract: The tasks of choosing documents from a new collection and categorization the choices, both on the basis of a body of standing queries, are known variously as selection and routing, selective dissemination of information (SDI), and information filtering. The combined operation of selecting and labeling documents naturally separates into 2 processes: feature scanning and query resolution. The first process examines a document for features and their locations; the second takes the findings from the first process, looks for satisfaction of combinations specified in the queries, and marks the document accordingly. When the body of queries is large, query resolution can become a significant factor in total processing speed. This paper outlines an efficient approach to performing query resolution on massive Boolean queries, suitable for implementation on a desktop computer. Algorithms are sketched in pseudo-code and experimental results are reported

6Tedd, L.A. ; Yeates, R.: ¬A personalized current awareness service for library and information services staff : an overview of the NewsAgent for Libraries project.
In: Program. 32(1998) no.4, S.373-390.
Abstract: NewsAgent for Libraries is one of the projects funded by the eLib programme in the UK. Following a brief historical account of the original ideas behind the project, describes the main stages in developing the project: which aims to create a user configurable electronic news and current awareness service for library and information professionals with a mixture of content streams, including metadata. Users' interests are specified by profiles which are then matched with incoming records so that users are alerted by electronic mail of items of potential interest. Examples of creating profiles and of some of the 'input feeds' in the project are given as well as an example of the use of the Dublic Core metadata format for describing resources covered in NewsAgent

7Rowley, J.: ¬The changing face of current awareness services.
In: Journal of librarianship and information science. 30(1998) no.3, S.177-183.
Abstract: Presents a state of the art review of current awareness services in 1997 noting: the components of typical current awareness services; the range and types of databases that may be scanned during searches; and the role of feedback and document delivery mechanisms. Includes a checklist of criteria which may be used to evaluate current awreness services, including: database coverage; timeliness and currency; cost; and mechansims for creating and maintaining user SDI profiles. Discusses the main types of current awareness services: contents page services; abstracting and indexing services; and integrated online products (such as Engineering Index's Engineering Village), including SDI. Considers the concept of currency and remarks on the tendency for current awareness services to be products of a producer led rather than a user led culture

9Kutty, N.N.: ¬A CDS/ISIS module for selective dissemination of information.
In: Information studies. 3(1997) no.4, S.186-217.
Abstract: Describes the use of a set of CDS/ISIS Pascal programmes for generating an SDI service from CDS/ISIS databases. The module is in use in the library of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. SDI notices can be generated based on simultaneous search outputs from more than one database. Limiting the SDI notices by record entry dates or by range of record numbers is provided for. The production of other outputs, such as lists of profiles, is described. A list of the fields in the Profile database, the worksheet for data entry, indexing parameters, and display and print formats are also given, as well as a data entry field guide to the Profile database

10Garfield, E.: Agony and ecstasy of the Internet : experiences of an information scientist qua publisher.
In: Towards a worldwide library: a ten year forecast. Proceedings of the 19th International Essen Symposium, 23-26 Sept 1996. Ed.: A.H. Helal u. J.W. Weiss. Essen : Universitätsbibliothek, 1996. S.202-222.
(Veröffentlichungen der Universitätsbibliothek Essen; 21)
Abstract: Reports recent experiences with the publishing, via the Internet and WWW of ISI's biweekly newspaper, The Scientist; which was originally mounted on the NSFnet. Compares the use of the Internet for SDI by comparing Web searches via AltaVista with similar searches on CD-ROM. Predicts that future current awareness services and SDI services will be linked to electronic periodicals in electronic libraries. Concludes with a note on cited reference searching, a variation on the theme of hypertext searching, with particular reference to SCI and Web crawlers
