1Galvão, R.M.: UNIMARC format relevance : maintenance or replacement?.
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 56(2018) no.1, S.62-82.
Abstract: This article presents an empirical study focused on a qualitative analysis of the UNIMARC format. An analysis of the structural quality of the data provided by the format is evaluated to determine its current suitability for meeting the requirements and trends in data architecture for the information network and the Semantic Web. Driven by a set of quality characteristics that identify weaknesses in the data schema that cannot be bridged by simply converting data to MARC XML or RDF/XML, we conclude that the UNIMARC format is not compliant with the current metadata schema desiderata and must be replaced.

2Aslanidi, M. ; Papadakis, I. ; Stefanidakis, M.: Name and title authorities in the music domain : alignment of UNIMARC authorities format with RDA.
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 56(2018) no.4, S.354-373.
Abstract: This article discusses and highlights alignment issues that arise between UNIMARC Authorities Format and Resource Description and Access (RDA) regarding the creation of name and title authorities for musical works and creators. More specifically, RDA, as an implementation of the FRAD model, is compared with the UNIMARC Authorities Format (Updates 2012 and 2016) in an effort to highlight various cases where the discovery of equivalent fields between the two standards is not obvious. The study is envisioned as a first step in an ongoing process of working with the UNIMARC community throughout RDA's advancement and progression regarding the entities [musical] Work and Names.

3Willer, M. ; Dunsire, G.: ISBD, the UNIMARC bibliographic format, and RDA : interoperability issues in namespaces and the linked data environment.
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 52(2014) no.8, S.888-913.
Abstract: The article is an updated and expanded version of a paper presented to International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions in 2013. It describes recent work involving the representation of International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) and UNIMARC (UNIversal MARC) in Resource Description Framework (RDF), the basis of the Semantic Web and linked data. The UNIMARC Bibliographic format is used to illustrate issues arising from the development of a bibliographic element set and its semantic alignment with ISBD. The article discusses the use of such alignments in the automated processing of linked data for interoperability, using examples from ISBD, UNIMARC, and Resource Description and Access.

Abstract: The paper discusses the role of XML and its perspectives in library information systems, particularly with regards to basic functions of bibliographic formats - storage and transportation of the data. Slim XML Schema for UNIMARC representation is presented, its main features being lossless conversion from MARC to XML, roundtripability from XML back to MARC, support for embedded fields and extended range of indicator values, independence from any specific dialect of MARC format, stability to any changes of the format.

5Carvalho, J.: ¬An XML representation of the UNIMARC manual : a working prototype.
In: http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla71/papers/199e-Carvalho.pdf.
(121 UNIMARC with Information Technology ; 199-E)
Abstract: The UNIMARC manual defines a standard for the formal representation of bibliographic information. For that purpose the UNIMARC manual contains different types of information: structural rules that define that records are composed of a leader, a set of control fields and a set of data fields, with certain syntactic characteristics; content rules, that define required fields and acceptable values for various components of the record; and, finally, examples, explanatory notes, cross references to other points of the manual. Much of this information must find its way into computer systems where it will be used to validate records, produce indexes, adequately format records for display and, in some cases, provide human readable help. Providing the UNIMARC manual in XML greatly simplifies the full implementation of the format in computer systems. Our goal was to produce a formal representation of the UNIMARC format, so that the standard can be incorporated in software systems in a transparent way. The outcome is an XML representation of the UNIMARC manual, which can be processed automatically by applications that need to enforce the format rules, provide help information, or vocabularies. We developed a scheme for the UNIMARC manual and a set of software tools that demonstrate its usage.

6Willer, M.: UNIMARC format for authority records : its scope and issues for authority control.
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 38(2004) nos.3/4, S.xx-xx.
Abstract: The IFLA standard for authority data, UNIMARC authorities format, is described in the light of developments of IFLA standards in the field of authority files, IFLA's activities in promoting the exchange of name authority records within the program of Universal Bibliographic Control and the design of the UNIMARC format for bibliographic records that established principles for its structure and design. The second revised and enlarged edition, UNIMARC Manual: Authorities Format, is described. Particular attention is paid to the methods for expressing relationships between different forms of headings, and relationships between different languages and scripts of headings. The maintenance of the format and sources for its revision are described.

Abstract: The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek acting on behalf of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL) was responsible for the preparation of this report under a contract agreed with the Commission of the European Communities Directorate General XIII as part of their Libraries Programme. The report considers the feasibility of the application of UNIMARC to multinational databases, and was based on a comparison of machine-readable bibliographic records in the UNIMARC format from 6 different national sources. Some are conversions from other formats, while others are 'native' UNIMARC records. The records are of books of the hand press period, that is, from the time of Gutenberg to about 1830

16Witt, M.: Cataloguing CD-ROMs using the ISBD(ER) rules : example of a French public library (Médiathèque de la Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris).
In: Cataloging and classification quarterly. 28(1999) no.1, S.21-32.
Abstract: The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris - the interactive museum for science and technology which opened to the public in 1986 hosts a multimedia library holding some 330,000 documents. The small collection of CD-ROMs integrated into the library's collection since the end of 1991 (''Public section'' and the "Didacthèque") have been expanded in October 1996. Presently more than 800 titles are available for viewing on site or for circulation. After the brief background of CD-ROM installation and collections in French public libraries this paper discusses the problems of describing CD-ROMs in the online catalog. It mostly concentrates on the collection for circulation. The rules of bibliographic description correspond to the draft of the French national standard, which follows the ISBD(ER) principles. The format used for cataloguing in the library is UNIMARC and the automated system - GEAC GLIS. Cataloguing has been done locally since the national bibliographic description of electronic documents was not available at the time when the first collection was constituted. Since April 1997 the "Bibliographie nationale française" on CD-ROM provides the description for electronic documents whose downloading is now possible. This paper analyses the benefits of downloading of bibliographic records for ER and concludes that some local adaptation (updating) is necessary for satisfying end user needs

In: Bulletin d'informations de l'Association des Bibliothecaires Francais. 1998, no.180, S.132-133.
Abstract: To facilitate exchange, holdings data needs to be integrated into the main bibliographic record sequence in local collections. Recent recommendations for French libraries propose using designated fields within UNIMARC, to meet the needs respectively of departmental lending libraries and joint catalogues. Further provisions for holdings data is being considered at international level

In: International cataloguing and bibliographic control. 27(1998) no.4, S.74-75.
Abstract: Focuses on the history of the UNIMARC format which was designed as a communication tool among the various national formats used for computerized bibliographic records. Explains the function of UNIMARC and ISBDs in bringing together automated versions of catalogues without greatly compromising individual or local characteristics. Gives examples of European projects which have resulted in products which illustrate the value of UNIMARC and discusses its application to electronic media and future in international networks
