1Guenette, D.R.: ¬The CD-ROM-online connection.
In: CD-ROM professional. 9(1996) no.3, S.30(+12 S.).
Abstract: Rejects the view that the Internet and WWW are likely to render CD-ROM technology obsolete, arguing that CD-ROM and online are complementary, CD-ROMs offer high density, broad bandwidth data storage and access, while online offers narrow bandwidth data access with the capability of up to the minute updating. The fact that many long standing CD-ROM database publishers have an even longer standing in the online environment is contrasted with their slowness to exploit the shared data structures used to produce the databases. Examples cited of CD-ROM and online hybrid systems include: H.W. Wilson's WILSONLINE and WILSONDISC; SilverPlatter's SPIRS and Electronic Reference Library (ERL) technologies; UMI's databases; and Knight Ridder Information's DIALOG and DIALOG OnDisc titles. Predicts a growth in hybrid systems particularly where frequent updates are needed. These hybrids offer publishers the option of reducing the frequency of updating their CD-ROMs yet improving the currency of the services
