Abstract: This book describes efficient and effective techniques for harnessing the power of Linked Data by tackling the various aspects of managing its growing volume: storing, querying, reasoning, provenance management and benchmarking. To this end, Chapter 1 introduces the main concepts of the Semantic Web and Linked Data and provides a roadmap for the book. Next, Chapter 2 briefly presents the basic concepts underpinning Linked Data technologies that are discussed in the book. Chapter 3 then offers an overview of various techniques and systems for centrally querying RDF datasets, and Chapter 4 outlines various techniques and systems for efficiently querying large RDF datasets in distributed environments. Subsequently, Chapter 5 explores how streaming requirements are addressed in current, state-of-the-art RDF stream data processing. Chapter 6 covers performance and scaling issues of distributed RDF reasoning systems, while Chapter 7 details benchmarks for RDF query engines and instance matching systems. Chapter 8 addresses the provenance management for Linked Data and presents the different provenance models developed. Lastly, Chapter 9 offers a brief summary, highlighting and providing insights into some of the open challenges and research directions. Providing an updated overview of methods, technologies and systems related to Linked Data this book is mainly intended for students and researchers who are interested in the Linked Data domain. It enables students to gain an understanding of the foundations and underpinning technologies and standards for Linked Data, while researchers benefit from the in-depth coverage of the emerging and ongoing advances in Linked Data storing, querying, reasoning, and provenance management systems. As life continues to move online, the web becomes increasingly important as a source for understanding the past. But historians have yet to formulate a methodology for approaching the archived web as a source of study. How should the history of the present be written? In this book, Niels Brügger offers an original methodological framework for approaching the web of the past, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. While many studies of the web focus solely on its use and users, Brügger approaches the archived web as a semiotic, textual system in order to offer the first book-length treatment of its scholarly use. While the various forms of the archived web can challenge researchers' interactions with it, they also present a range of possibilities for interpretation. The Archived Web identifies characteristics of the online web that are significant now for scholars, investigates how the online web became the archived web, and explores how the particular digitality of the archived web can affect a historian's research process. Brügger offers suggestions for how to translate traditional historiographic methods for the study of the archived web, focusing on provenance, creating an overview of the archived material, evaluating versions, and citing the material. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet das Phänomen aus kommunikationswissenschaftlicher, rechtlicher, pädagogischer und technischer Perspektive.

Wer an der Diskussion um die Rolle der meistgenutzten Suchmaschine in unserer Gesellschaft Interesse hat, findet in diesem Buch reichlich Material und Ideen. Jeder Beitrag wird zudem durch ein Literaturverzeichnis ergänzt, in dem weiterführende Quellen genannt werden. Die Beiträge sind durchweg "lesbar" geschrieben und nur in mässigem Ausmass von soziologischem oder rechtswissenschaftlichem Fachjargon durchsetzt. In stilistischer Hinsicht ist der Text dennoch nicht ohne Probleme, zumal bereits im ersten Absatz der Einleitung ein als Hauptsatz "verkaufter" Nebensatz auffällt ("Denn Suchmaschinenbetreiber wie Google ermöglichen und gestalten den Zugang zu Informationen im Netz.") und die gleiche stilistische Schwäche allein in der 19-seitigen Einleitung in über einem Dutzend weiterer Fälle registriert werden kann, vom nächsten Beitrag gar nicht zu sprechen. Ein funktionierendes Verlagslektorat hätte derlei rigoros bereinigen müssen. Es hätte eventuell auch dafür Sorge tragen können, dass am Ende des Bandes nicht nur ein Verzeichnis der Autorinnen und Autoren aufscheint, sondern auch ein Sachregister - ein solches fehlt nämlich bedauerlicherweise. In optischer Hinsicht ist der Hardcover-Band ansprechend gestaltet und gut gelungen. Der Preis liegt mit rund 80 Euro leider in der Oberklasse; auch die E-Book-Version macht die Anschaffung nicht billiger, da kein Preisunterschied zur gebundenen Ausgabe besteht. Dennoch ist das Buch aufgrund der interessanten Inhalte durchaus zu empfehlen; grössere Bibliotheken sowie kommunikations- und informationswissenschaftliche Spezialsammlungen sollten es nach Möglichkeit erwerben."

Tweets bei Twitter und 12,2 Mio. Kommentare bei Facebook. Während in Deutschland vor einigen Jahren noch Google als nahezu einzige Suchmaschine beim Zugriff auf Informationen im Web genutzt wurde, nehmen heute die u.a. in Social Media veröffentlichten Meinungen und damit die Vorauswahl sowie Bewertung von Informationen einzelner Experten und Meinungsführer an Bedeutung zu. Aber wie können themenspezifische Informationen nun effizient für konkrete Fragestellungen identifiziert und bedarfsgerecht aufbereitet und visualisiert werden? Diese Studie gibt einen Überblick über semantische Standards und Formate, die Prozesse der semantischen Suche, Methoden und Techniken semantischer Suchsysteme, Komponenten zur Entwicklung semantischer Suchmaschinen sowie den Aufbau bestehender Anwendungen. Die Studie erläutert den prinzipiellen Aufbau semantischer Suchsysteme und stellt Methoden der semantischen Suche vor. Zudem werden Softwarewerkzeuge vorgestellt, mithilfe derer einzelne Funktionalitäten von semantischen Suchmaschinen realisiert werden können. Abschließend erfolgt die Betrachtung bestehender semantischer Suchmaschinen zur Veranschaulichung der Unterschiede der Systeme im Aufbau sowie in der Funktionalität.

Abstract: The main goal of this book is to transfer new research results from the fields of advanced computer sciences and information science to the design of new search engines. The readers will have a better idea of the new trends in applied research. The achievement of relevant, organized, sorted, and workable answers- to name but a few - from a search is becoming a daily need for enterprises and organizations, and, to a greater extent, for anyone. It does not consist of getting access to structural information as in standard databases; nor does it consist of searching information strictly by way of a combination of key words. It goes far beyond that. Whatever its modality, the information sought should be identified by the topics it contains, that is to say by its textual, audio, video or graphical contents. This is not a new issue. However, recent technological advances have completely changed the techniques being used. New Web technologies, the emergence of Intranet systems and the abundance of information on the Internet have created the need for efficient search and information access tools. ; Recent technological progress in computer science, Web technologies, and constantly evolving information available on the Internet has drastically changed the landscape of search and access to information. Web search has significantly evolved in recent years. In the beginning, web search engines such as Google and Yahoo! were only providing search service over text documents. Aggregated search was one of the first steps to go beyond text search, and was the beginning of a new era for information seeking and retrieval. These days, new web search engines support aggregated search over a number of vertices, and blend different types of documents (e.g., images, videos) in their search results. New search engines employ advanced techniques involving machine learning, computational linguistics and psychology, user interaction and modeling, information visualization, Web engineering, artificial intelligence, distributed systems, social networks, statistical analysis, semantic analysis, and technologies over query sessions. Documents no longer exist on their own; they are connected to other documents, they are associated with users and their position in a social network, and they can be mapped onto a variety of ontologies. Similarly, retrieval tasks have become more interactive and are solidly embedded in a user's geospatial, social, and historical context. It is conjectured that new breakthroughs in information retrieval will not come from smarter algorithms that better exploit existing information sources, but from new retrieval algorithms that can intelligently use and combine new sources of contextual metadata. ; With the rapid growth of web-based applications, such as search engines, Facebook, and Twitter, the development of effective and personalized information retrieval techniques and of user interfaces is essential. The amount of shared information and of social networks has also considerably grown, requiring metadata for new sources of information, like Wikipedia and ODP. These metadata have to provide classification information for a wide range of topics, as well as for social networking sites like Twitter, and Facebook, each of which provides additional preferences, tagging information and social contexts. Due to the explosion of social networks and other metadata sources, it is an opportune time to identify ways to exploit such metadata in IR tasks such as user modeling, query understanding, and personalization, to name a few. Although the use of traditional metadata such as html text, web page titles, and anchor text is fairly well-understood, the use of category information, user behavior data, and geographical information is just beginning to be studied. This book is intended for scientists and decision-makers who wish to gain working knowledge about search engines in order to evaluate available solutions and to dialogue with software and data providers.
