Abstract

Asserts that the unstated premise in essentially all the hullabaloo surrounding wider, free, unmediated access to the Internet is the virtual meaningless of everything on the network to all lacking the knowledge base to use it. Better that all this hype and energy be directed toward a major undertaking to encourage the more extensive use of a greater number of books of genuine substance: whether purchased or borrowed from libraries. The outcome would be a more broadly and better educated citizenry, which, even if only a fraction ever used the Internet, would vastly improve the economic, social, and cultural life of the nation
