Abstract

One difference between a portal and a mere search engine is that portals are now the recipients of investments from major media interests, a trend which may have important ramifications for the Web publishing. Points to AOL as a successful portal, quotes a compilation of 10 favourite Web activities and examines the contents of a portal, typically a search engine or directory plus free e-mail but also news services.
