"Das Langzeitgedächtnis, entwickelt sich erst im Verlauf des zweiten Lebensjahrs: Vorher können sich Kleinkinder nur sehr schlecht an länger zurückliegende Ereignisse erinnern, berichten amerikanische Wissenschaftler im britischen Fachblatt "Nature" (Bd. 419, S: 896). Demnach be.halten sechs Monate alte Babys Erlebnisse lediglich 24 Stunden im Gedächtnis, mit neun Monaten steigt das Erinnerungsvermögen schon auf einen Monat. Um die Entwicklung des Gedächtnisses zu untersuchen, wurde Kleinkindern im Alter von 9,17 und 24 Monaten zunächst eine kleine Geschichte vorgespielt. Begleitet von dem Ausruf "Zeit zum Saubermachen" wischte ein Wissenschaftler zum Beispiel vor ihren Augen einen Tisch ab und warf das Papiertuch anschließend in den Mülleimer. Direkt im Anschluss und noch einmal vier Monate später wurden die Kinder aufgefordert, die Handlungen nachzumachen. Die Forscher fanden heraus, dass sich diejenigen Kinder, die sich zum Zeitpunkt des ersten Tests schon im zweiten Lebensjahr befanden, lebhaft an die Geschichte erinnern und die Handlung nachahmen. Die jüngeren, beim ersten Test neun Monate alten Kinder, hatten hingegen keine Erinnerung an das zuvor Erlebte. Nach Ansicht der Wissenschaftler ist die Ausbildung des Langzeitgedächtnisses eng an die Entwicklung des Gehirns gekoppelt."
