Abstract

Rolf Escher gehört nicht zu den Künstlern, die das Laute, den Aktionismus oder die Sensation suchen. Die leisen, nachdenklichen, abwägenden Töne sind seine Welt. Die stete Suche nach Verborgenem im Vorhandenen, die mehrschichtigen Tiefendimensionen und das Phänomen Zeit als unerklärbares und nicht zu lösendes Problem menschlichen Daseins beherrschen seine Blätter. Hier fühlt er sich zu Hause in den Hinterlassenschaften menschlichen Fühlens, Denkens und Wollens. Dies war vor 20 Jahren genauso wie heute. Damals zeigte er in der Galerie die Ausstellung seiner Mitteilungen aus verlassenen Häusern. Heute sind es seine Bücherzeiten. Die hochsensiblen, akribisch durchgearbeiteten, fast altmeisterlich zu bezeichnenden Arbeiten seiner Bleistift-Zeichnungen und Radierungen zeigen nicht abgegriffene Themen sondern aktuelle und zugleich zeitlose Auseinandersetzungen. Sie sind von einer faszinierenden Eindringlichkeit. Rolf Escher arbeitet sich, einem Detektiv vergleichbar, in die Geschichtlichkeit der Dingwelt ein. Dabei entdeckt er sowohl die Qualität des Gegenstandes als auch das darin stattgefundene Leben. Dies konnte ich bei der ersten Begegnung 1980 in der o. g. Ausstellung der Galerie beobachten. Dies wurde darin deutlich, wie er seinen Münsteraner Studenten die Bergbauwelt 1988 in der Ausstellung abteufen und fördern in den Herner Flottmann-Hallen näherbrachte. Sein Beitrag in der Ausstellung Die Pest 1998 zeigte die ungewöhnliche Verlebendigung von Toten, wie sie in Palermo noch heute geschieht. Nicht zuletzt in dem engen Kontakt zur aktuellen Präsentation wird deutlich, wie Escher in das Geheimnis der Bücher- und Bibliotheks-Welt eingestiegen ist. Diese schriftlichen Monumente werden in ihrer Entstehung, Aufbewahrung und Benutzung durch die Jahrhunderte verlebendigt. Man spürt etwas von der Bedeutung gespeicherter Welterfassung und Durchdringung, die in diesen Codices und sonstigen Publikationen enthalten sind. Zugleich wird aber auch die persönliche Handschrift des Künstlers Escher deutlich, die den Betrachter in die fast mythisch erscheinende Bücherwelt einführen will. Wir danken den Autoren Walter Jens, Hanns Michael Crass sowie Dirk Schwarze für ihre Beiträge, dem Kultursekretariat Gütersloh für die finanzielle Unterstützung. Erst das besondere Engagement des Künstlers für die Ausstellung ermöglicht uns, die Publikation in diesem Rahmen erscheinen zu lassen. Der Druckerei Kettler sind wir für die kooperative Zusammenarbeit dankbar. Aber erst die originalen Werke Rolf Eschers machen die Ausstellung zu einem der Höhepunkte im Ausstellungsjahr 2000. Dafür möchte ich meinen persönlichen Dank an den Aussteller aussprechen.
