Abstract
Bibliotheken sind Sammelstellen von Literatur und Informationen, die von Verlagen, Institutionen, Vereinigungen und Privatpersonen herausgegeben werden. Sie sammeln, verzeichnen (erschließen) und vermitteln. Dass sie dabei auch selbst publizieren, heute - seit der Möglichkeit elektronischer Publikationen - mehr denn je, ist bislang jedenfalls im deutschsprachigen Raum offenbar nur stiefmütterlich und am Rand behandelt worden [48]. Der ehemalige Generaldirektor der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek Josef Stummvoll schrieb vor fast 40 Jahren: "Dabei sind für große Bibliotheken, aber auch fast für jede kleine Bücherei, besonders natürlich für Institutionen mit wertvollen Handschriften, Inkunabeln und anderen Buchschätzen Veröffentlichungen nötig und selbstverständlich, " und erfährt fort: "Für das Ansehen und die Wirkung nach außen ist also das Publikationswesen einer Bibliothek oft von entscheidender Bedeutung, denn meist erfahren andere Länder nur dadurch von solchen Leistungen. "' Es lohnt deshalb, sich mit dieser Seite bibliothekarischer Arbeit etwas intensiver auseinanderzusetzen. Im begrenzten Rahmen eines Festschriftbeitrages kann freilich nur eine erste Annäherung an das Thema, ein Überblick, geboten werden.
