Abstract

Presents an overview of German historical archive automation processes, with particular reference to state archives. Points out the problems that arise in automatic data processing applications in relation to research instrument production and to archival description end users. In Germany, automation is mainly used in document descriptions and in finding aid preparation. In general, German archivists are only responsible for historical archives and have virtually no influence on office records management and its computer applications. Also comments on management procedure programs and on the automation of current archives
