Abstract

Offshore data entry is becoming a rapidly growing industry, focused on developing countries and regions characterized by cheap, exploitable labour. Reviews the offshore sata entry industry and the role played by information organizations, such as librariess. Information organization are participants in an economy of information production and one that is becoming globalized. With this globalization, new production practices have emerged. However, research has been accumulating for some time that calls the labour practices of this industry into question. With these practices comes ethical dilemmas for information professionals and it is therefore necessary for the information profession to come to an understanding of this emerging economy. Argues that an improved ethical framework for data conversion can neither arise through ceasing to use offshore work nor from technological advances in data entry technology (such as OCR). An ethics of information production must involve the cooperation of both producers and consumers alike
