Abstract

Information professionals have long thought of themselves as knowledge workes, providing value added services to their organizations. The new knowledge economy which has introduced a period of rapid change for librarians and libraries can be viewed as either the beginning of a new 'golden age' for the profession, or the point when librarians and information professionals become marginalized, and perhaps made irrelevant, by advances in digital computer and telecommunications technologies and the networking power of the Internet, Intranets and Extranets. Argues that librarians are in a position to transform themselves into 'value adding knowledge professionals' if they are able to visualize a world of rapid change, instantaneous communication and organizational transformation from organizations based on identifiable boundaries to networks of business relationships
