Abstract

Eine Zeit, die den Medienbegriff zu universalisieren beginnt, übersieht nur allzu schnell, daß die Attraktivität der neuen Medien sich nicht aus den schieren Vorteilen ihren Gebrauchs speist, sondern aus einem theologischen Versprechen: Wer mit den neuen Medien umgeht, nimmt teil an einer Erlösung des Menschen von seinem Leib und seiner Welt, die beide ihm auf Schritt und Tritt Grenzen setzen. Die mediale Überwindung von Leib und Welt inszeniert daher nichts anderes als eine Eschatologie, die auf technischem Wege das Ende der Geschichte realisieren will. Gegen diese medialen Erlösungsphontasien erinnert der Essay daran, daß das eschaton eine unübersteigbare Grenze unserer Welt markiert.
