Abstract

Der Philosoph, Sozialkritiker und Nobelpreisträger Bertrand Russell behandelt in 15 Aufsätzen und Glossen eine Vielfalt an Themen. Das Spektrum reicht von den Vorteilen des Müßiggangs über soziale Aspekte der Architektur, »unnützes Wissen«, die Licht- und Schattenseiten von Kapitalismus, Faschismus und Kommunismus bis zu der Frage nach dem Wesen der Seele oder dem Verhältnis von Menschen und Insekten. Erstmals 1957 erschienen, sind die Betrachtungen von überraschender Aktualität, etwa bezüglich des globalen Kapitalismus, Fragen der Erziehung oder des Verhältnisses von Arbeit und Freizeit. Mit Witz und Scharfsinn plädiert Russell für geistige Unvoreingenommenheit und die Bereitschaft, dogmatische Auffassungen immer wieder kritisch zu hinterfragen.
